Random spot checks on thousands of people? I don't see how you can do that on this kind of scale.

I suspect inbound travel is going to collapse very quickly.

Why is it that we have some complaining that we need to do more at the border, and now that we are, its a problem?

I haven't seen complaints (not here) but questions on how to enforce the rules.

Geektastic: How do you self isolate if you’re visiting and don’t have a house?

Hotels are full of people!

Notice on the room door, nobody in or out for 14 day's. Room service food & toilet paper left outside your door. Strict instructions not to open the door for 2 minutes after they knock. Hopefully unlimited internet & movies are available.

How will the border security enforce self-isolation of business visitors coming to New Zealand for less than fourteen days? Will they check return flight tickets and prevent entering the country?

Good point.

I definitely cannot afford to stay in isolation for two weeks. Does anyone have a phone number for Air New Zealand? I can't get through on their 0800 number. I also have flights with United Airlines.

They will be getting slammed. Hopefully they unlock flexibility on all fares, so changes can be made via the app. (of course, they are not obliged to).

I keep checking and my booking is still unable to be cancelled. Hopefully they'll unlock flexibility on all fares as you say after Jacinda Ardern's announcement.

Sorry, referring to pre announcement posts re border entry isn't enough. Now we have a seemingly much wider border restriction (basically every country) some say it wont work (as voluntary)

Have a wedding next month. Number of Aussies for 2 day visit. This same 'how?' popped up.

I wish the q and a was broadcast. Despite their downside reporter's often ask these things on the spot too

Might have to call in the armed services to help with manpower.

That said, an economic downturn is expected, so a workforce could be recruited. Note exactly skilled work somebody could write a smartphone app for the workers and instruct them to visit the declared location, knock on the door, stand 3m back, wait for all occupants to come to the door (but not outside) and snap a photo of everybody. This could be done twice a day (times randomized including middle of the knight), with instructions that the person to leave and armed services of police called if everybody doesn't appear at the door in say 3 minutes.

Combine with harsh penalties i.e. non citizens get deported, Citizens get to serve the rest of their isolation in a prison isolation unit, then get a 6 month prison term to be served after the pandemic is over.

99.5% of people would comply with the above (assuming their necessities like food are supplied), which massively improves our odds for slowing infection.

Something special will need to be arranged for sea and air crew. I assume sea crew could be locked down to the cabin while the ship is unloaded, and an airport hotel could be taken over for the air crew, and the entire hotel treated as a contaminated "red zone".

My wife's company has banned all internal and external travel unless very urgent. All meetings to be conducted using Zoom or Teams or the telephone. Where possible work from home. Clean work stations daily and not sharing of tech items.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

DS248: When is "midnight Sunday"?

usually "midnight" refers to the transition to the following day. In this case when Sunday turns into Monday...

11:59:59PM Sunday / 12:00AM Monday.

Perhaps Employers who have employees away on business trips or known offshore private trips should be required to keep that employee out of the workplace for fourteen days (fined a very large amount otherwise for a H&S breach)
