Fewer than half of the Port of Tauranga workers have received even one vaccine dose.

Hopeless of the port business to let that situation happen, and of the union for resisting mandatory vaccination.  They're supposed to look after their workers, their families, and the community.

It was quite odd. Even a month ago, You had one camp saying they support mandatory. And another, (the workers union?) supporting the workers may not be able to because they work odd hours, often overnight say 8pm-4am and sleeping during the day and just can't get it done.

Uhhhhmmm it's called making an effort or arranging an after hours service during breaks?

Vaccine bookings for over 50s are now going to be open from Friday.

The press release appeared on the Government RSS feed but the article itself is not available yet. Will post soon.

What a massive fail.

Until there's a law change to allow employers to dismiss employees that aren't vaccinated it will continue to happen.

Following strong uptake from the 60-plus and 55-plus age groups, COVID-19 vaccine bookings for New Zealanders aged 50-plus are being brought forward to Friday 13 August, earlier than planned, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said today.

“Being able to open another age band so quickly is a real confidence booster and shows how well New Zealand is embracing the vaccine,” Chris Hipkins said.

“We opened 55-plus 10 days after 60-plus, instead of the planned two weeks, and are now opening 50-plus after 7 days.”

There are about 300,000 people in the 50-plus age group.

“Last week was the best yet in the vaccination programme. We reached two million doses on Tuesday and by the end of the week passed more than 2,200,000 doses in total. On the Wednesday we set a record of 45,082 doses in one day across the country.

“The booking system continues to perform well with a record 296,650 vaccinations booked last week. We now have 1,009,536 vaccinations booked in the system. Over the last three days the 0800 call centre handled 27,695 calls with an average wait time of less than 1 minute.

“This is a great all round response and means we’re in position to open the 50-plus age band for vaccinations earlier than planned.

“People in the 50-plus group who are eligible don’t have to wait to receive an invitation. They can make their own booking from Friday 13 August at 8am by visiting bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz or by calling the 0800 28 29 26 COVID Vaccination Healthline (8am-8pm, seven days a week).

“People in other groups who are eligible and who are not vaccinated yet can also continue to book – there’s no cut-off.

“Consignments of the vaccine continue to arrive as expected.

“One million doses of the vaccine were delivered in July, and another 1.5 million will be delivered in August, 388,000 of these arriving yesterday morning.”

OK so question time raised it

They know there is the reports that 6-8wks may be better spacing. But as that data is real world and not from the manufacturer at this time they are keeping an eye on it, but not considering a change decision currently.

I am pretty sure that not even this will make them believe that Covid-19 is something to be concerned about:

A leader of the Texas Republican Party hopped on Facebook in May to post about a “mask burning” party 900 miles away in Cincinnati.

“I wished I lived in the area!” wrote H Scott Apley.

The month before, Apley responded to what Baltimore’s former health commissioner was heralding as “great news” — clinical trials showed the Pfizer vaccine was effective at fighting the coronavirus, including one of the recent variants, for at least six months.

“You are an absolute enemy of a free people,” he wrote in a Twitter reply.

And on Friday, the 45-year-old Dickinson City Council member republished a Facebook post implying that vaccines don’t work.

Two days later, Apley was admitted to a Galveston hospital with “pneumonia-like symptoms” and tested positive for coronavirus, according to an online fundraising campaign. He was sedated and put on a ventilator.

On Wednesday, he died, members of his county’s party announced on social media.

Happy I got my first shot of the vaccine last Saturday.

Some of the anti-waxers seem to get smart too late:

Darwinism at its finest! Well keep it coming as I hope the "Grand Old Party" which morphed into the "Tea Party" then morphed into the "Freedom Caucus" (code for far right) will become the "Grand Obliterated Party" or even the "Grand Extinct Party".

The only thing that will save them is if the young conservative middle and upper class get vaccinated and realise that conservative centralism is more survivable than far right radicalism.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I think this is the correct decision. Maintaining the overall pace of vaccination is more important than a marginal increase in efficacy.

"Ardern said 98 port workers who had dealt with the Rio De La Plata had been tested - but only nine of the workers were fully vaccinated."

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-vaccine-rollout-update-covid-infected-ship-majority-of-tauranga-port-workers-unvaccinated/GAEYWS5QHVTZLCMBHCCHKIXG3I/

Frankly this is quite embarrassing for both the port, and the government. Not only was a ship that was potentially linked to a positive pilot in Aussie allowed to dock prior to testing, but also a workforce that was largely not fully vaccinated was allowed onboard...

Hopefully the pilot was one of those 9 that were vaccinated, and hopefully the rest were working outdoors as lashers or similar away from the ships crew. Would be awesome if we could get lucky and not have an outbreak from this.

Interesting that they are splitting the cohorts into smaller groups...  its was originally 10yr groups,  ( except for 60+)

https://covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-vaccine-rollout-groups/

People aged 55 and over    Now
People aged 45 and over    Mid to late August
People aged 35 and over    Mid to late September
People aged 16 and over    October

I suspect this is for 2 reasons

1) They can be more reactive open up a new group earlier vaccination spaces become available sooner than they expect (bookings slow down/more vaccinators come on stream).
 - Won't have as as large a bottle neck as when the groups first open.

2) the PR is better that they can say the look - the queue is moving quicker :)

Both these things are good. Not wasting appointment times and people hearing good news about vaccinations so remain/becoming willing to get vaccinated.

Yeah the PR aspect is important. The vaccination program being successful hinges on it looking like it being successful. A lot of the hesitant people will get vaccinated if it's easy and the thing "everybody" is doing.

No need to slow down the vaccination program, but we would see the number of first doses given out surge a bit compared to the number fully vaccinated.

When there's an outbreak being fully vaccinated is far more likely to have good outcomes than having one shot.

You can't get unvaccinated but you can only get one shot and not go back if there's a long time between shots.

I know they're painting this whole border thing with a bad brush, and in a way rightfully so.
But say the story broke, and all of them were. Would everyone be as equally angry and finger pointy I wonder.

Doesnt the current climate indicate there's the same danger jabbed or not if they were exposed to close contacts. If not a higher chance at being asymptomatic with something that in effect has a higher viral loading. But leas chance of effecting the individual

We would be in the current state anyways?
All the workers at home because they were exposed, Awaiting tests with baited breath.

The only difference being, the jab in the arm got in and was a slightly different headline.

Not downplaying btw. Just wondering. As the first line of defence has apparently remained. All arrivals treated as they have it. But in this case, they have so there's a potential exposure.
