Alas SO & I just had to defer our second covid jab due this afternoon as we both have colds (courtesy of pre-school g'kids ... again, ... again!).  Fortunately the last three (in ~4 months!) only lasted a couple of days apiece; this one ~3-4 days.  More or less over it now, just occasional residual cough but sufficient to defer the covid jab until Friday.

Hmm. I flew to Christchurch from Auckland this morning for work. This could be tricky.

And here I thought this thread would go dead while everyone would have rushed out to stock up on Loo Paper!

My wife was at the supermarket, unrelated to this. She was in before the announcement and she said within 15 minutes security guards were having to pretty much block the door way in. She said the number one thing people were buying was loo paper.

She said it was full on panic stations.. People never learn...

Don't forget the stock piling of houses too. More madness and greed  coming.

I really hope there is a Level 4 lockdown in Auckland and Level 3 for New Zealand with this announcement. Even though that means "work gets really really busy"

I think we need to know some more facts about it. When there was a delta case going around Wellington, it only put the Wellington region  into level 3. Level 4 is very very expensive.

Eh?  That was before there was confirmed info about Delta infectivity.

Level ~4 cost to the NZ economy last year was estimated by Treasury to be $230 million a day.

Sydney has probably been dealing with that cost for two months with no end in sight (it's getting worse)

So the cost of NOT locking down hard and fast could easily be much higher.

Pretty sure it was known back in the Wellington case how much more infectious the Delta strain was, and why it needed level 3 restrictions. Sydney's main problem is that they didn't go into lockdown early enough and when they did it was lockdown lite, with many stores still open. They also do have flouters and held rallies.
Other states got rid of Delta but have had resurgences come through.

Maybe they know it is more infectious now than ever. But if that is the case IMO people shouldn't be traveling out of Auckland now, as the virus doesn't know when any restrictions will start.

I am very relieved that myself and my wife are vaccinated. However not so happy as we are a startup business.

dont look at NSW , Queensland is more what should happen , they are down to  zero cases today after a short sharp lockdown. NSW could have done something similar but didnt think  it was necessary. We will be Queensland.

Hmmmm, we were supposed to be picking up a campervan in Akl on Thursday to trip round Northland, that looks pretty unlikely.

At least maintaining a fastidious use of the COVID App means I don’t have to try and reconstruct everywhere I’ve been in the last 2 weeks.

I think it was August/September last year when Auckland closed up shop.

Our lockdown definitely shouldn't be like Sydney

Without looking back, I'm pretty sure that it was well and truly discussed here (delta strain) WRT both the Wgtn case and the way Sydney wasn't locking down hard enough.  IIRC I posted about the "birthday party" case in Sydney "lockdown lite" where in the end I think almost all of 40 attending the party tested positive.  Also reports of transmission from very casual contacts - ie passing in the street in Melbourne.

But I don't think there were "official" statements about its estimated R0, just a collection of very compelling anecdotes.

As for people "not leaving Auckland now" - fat chance would be my guess.

I just hope we don't get a lot of flouters and protestors etc. People shouldn't feel worn out by lockdowns etc, because we haven't had any for ages.
