I'm reading social media posts (from credible sources) that there are anti-lockdown protests planned at midday tomorrow in Christchurch and Auckland.

I very much hope that the people involved get some time in custody.

Edit: Christchurch, not Wellington

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Enough with the carrot, time to bring out the BIG financial stick like in NSW.

Question

Family member driving to Dunedin tomorrow to live. Internet got cut off earlier, sposed to be midnight. Power will disconnect tomorrow sometime. The moving truck wont be there tomorrow now. No food as she ran that down, so went to the supey. You know the rest of the story! ChCh.

Could this be covered as an exemption/48 hours to get home?

I think it would be fine. I imagine like other lock-downs, enforcement will be kinda relaxed. As long as they can prove their address (via rental agreement or Sale & purchase agreement), I doubt they will have any issues with enforcement, and saying that they are going home...

Bigger issue is that the movers won't be operating, so they won't have furniture (or fridge / washing machine / microwave?), or anything that won't fit in their car.

Also they will need carry the risk that something won't be right when they arrive. Hot water system broken, rodent issues etc.

I don't see why not. I don't think her stuff will get delivered though.

Your probably right, that was my first thought, forget it. But maybe as its a moving truck from exited house to new house that might form part of the exemption. Its like an extenuated circumstance. Plus they might prefer to move it rather than backup other moves, as it can put people in a pickle. See what happens, worst case stay put here, can sort power and internet easy enough for a few extra days. No exit pressure this end

The whole caboodle will be in the moving truck, so if no truck they will need to stay here till lockdown eases.

From other lock-downs, Movers aren't allowed in alert level 4, but are under alert level 3.

I don't understand the new mask rules (more the fact there aren't any). Why is it still going to take 24 hours for cabinet to discuss and announce the new mask rules?

Surely this was a basic requirement of a new L4 that mask use outside the home would be mandated? Why hasn't this already been done so it could be immediately announced as part of L4 restrictions?

Can't seem to find what is deemed an essential business this time around; I am gathering some places may have forgotten in the last 15 months down here in the South..

So far, they’ve specifically called out supermarkets, pharmacies, dairies, food banks, self-service laundries, service stations, clinics, and food/grocery delivery services. On the Covid19.govt.nz website

There’s also a generic ”Only certain businesses may remain open to the public during the Alert Level 4 period. If a business is not sure if it provides Alert Level 4 services or products, it should close.”

Based on some mails and websites from certain businesses, they seem to think this is Alert Level 3 and they can open for click and collect and delivery. This is not the case.

HelloThere:

I can't believe how busy the liquor shops were. Even busier than the supermarket.

It's rational for them to be more busy than the supermarkets. Outside of trusts regions, they aren't allowed to trade in level 4.

So if you like booze other than beer & wine, it is your last chance to get it for what could potentially be 4+ weeks. Not healthy, but I assume there is a chunk of the population that views a level 4 lock-down as an opportunity to drink a lot of alcohol...

Personally I would have expected a rush on:

  • Booze stores (as above)
  • Hardware stores (supplies for lock-down DIY projects)
  • Entertainment stuff (Games consoles etc.)
  • Home fitness stuff
  • Coffee machines
  • Home office stuff (especially printers, as stuff like monitors can be borrowed from offices)

The rush on supermarkets seems quite irrational. It's one of the few retailers that will be open tomorrow and so on. Of course there will be some people that normally eat out or have takeaways for most meals, have just canceled or returned from holiday, that would not have had have much food on hand that will suddenly need it. (i.e. people who were planning a cafe brunch tomorrow, that now will need food for breakfast / brunch at home).

I suspect a lot of the supermarket rush is people jumping on the bandwagon. Media seems to love reporting on it, and people see others panic buying and decide to they need to get in on it too so they don't get caught short be being too slow.

I have always wondered why supermarkets here do not sell spirits. They do in Europe. I can't really see the point of the restriction - either you sell alcohol or you do not.

No logic. It is a question. People here seem to be the same kind of humans as the European ones. I can't see what problem is  solved by making people go to a different shop to buy one type of legal product.

It's much like the mask issue. Old old L4 guidelines all got rescinded months ago.. And it basically appears nothing is ready to replace these right now. Some will require cabinet approval and health orders before they can come into place,.

Unfortunately despite these efforts. By the tracing appears to have also been like most and not taken the 'stay at home and get tested if sick' as seriously as it needed to be.
