There is also the need to safely house people for 20min obs. Some smaller places don't allow for the spacing under 4 conditions

Nurses operating may be re-tasked if contracted groups. And just plain to avoid people rushing and demanding it suddenly like bread/milk is some reasons an outside observer mind can think of.

Four new cases announced just now. Guess we can definately say now  we haven't won at Russian roulette again this time.

Oh dear. Everyone here knows that an outbreak was inevitable. Finally, its here, and its still the ol' "Russian Roulette"  Your vision of Covid Utopia doesn't exist. We didn't hang on this far by luck, although thats a part of it . Perhaps we should have looked to Australia for guidance if we are just playing Russian Roulette

Unfortunately one is a nurse at Auckland hospital.

Fingers crossed on that...

Because these 4 new cases were confirmed quickly, hopefully a close/family contact of the first case and caught in the early stages - not an unconnected case who rocked up for testing yesterday because they were unwell.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said the four cases were all close contacts of the Devonport case - he indicated some were people living with the man.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Thats good, but the worry is not the easy to contact close contacts, its the many that were in or around the places of interest, that feel fine or just have Winter symptoms, who have also intermingled the last few days. 1 gives it to 6, who each give it to 6 etc. At least lockdown will stop or vastly limit spread as from today

Was made clear last night airnz are running on normal schedule, likely empty. To allow those away from home to return for 48hrs.

Air NZ are operating pretty much normal schedules for the next two days. This is a core requirement of L4 so people can get home.

That's good.

So when do we get confirmation of sequencing match?

It seems to be a reasonable assumption that as the man / first case was scanning in, then one of these close contacts testing positive could be who infected him.  Hopefully not the nurse if they've been on shift while infectious.

His wife has so far tested negative.  She'd had two doses of vaccine.

We could rename it to Delta Airlines NZ given the virulence and and ease of spread of the Delta variant.

I'd like to think the lvl4 protocol is in place at the airport.

Noone flies without exemption or proof of living away. While they take the level with. Ie home for 7 if leaving akl. Anyone else is more likely a 1 way street towards the hotspot.

From Stuff:

According to the MOH website there was a person from the border with Covid in a hospital yesterday, Wilson said.

So it was possible that the infected hospital worker was infected through a case from the border being hospitalised.

"That gives us a tentative idea of what may have happened. We absolutely need the genomic testing to clarify that, and other investigations, of course,"  Wilson said.

Conjecture until sequencing is completed - much the same as our guesses here.

Presumably confirming delta (as has been done) is looking for a few specific markers, sequencing the whole genome then cross-matching with a database takes longer.

I'm sure they're even more desperate to know the result than we are.
