If there's an outbreak in the country's largest hospital we have a problem bigger than "where is the source and sources of the index case".

Oh dear.

Anyone know...

Are they treating any of the Covid patients at Auckland Hospital, or they go to Middlemore ?
Suppose with most MIQ being in city Auckland Hospital are staff serving the MIQ's ?

Contacts of contacts its going to be a bit of work.

I was surprised that all of New Zealand went into Level 4; but it might be needed.

My negative side says this will become a 2 week Level 4 across the country and longer in the North Island.

Can't seem to find what is deemed an essential business this time around; I am gathering some places may have forgotten in the last 15 months down here in the South..

I still have my letter from last year telling people I am essential, so normal time for what might be a very very long day

I agree.

I think we could be looking at minimum a month in Auckland and possibly longer of the Delta Variant spreads as quickly as it has overseas.

Fred99: From Stuff:
According to the MOH website there was a person from the border with Covid in a hospital yesterday, Wilson said.   So it was possible that the infected hospital worker was infected through a case from the border being hospitalised.   "That gives us a tentative idea of what may have happened. We absolutely need the genomic testing to clarify that, and other investigations, of course,"  Wilson said.
Conjecture until sequencing is completed - much the same as our guesses here.

RNZ have been all over this with very conflicting information from "experts".

The Jet Park patient was moved to ACH on Friday (and reported in media at the time - checking facts isn't hard), so timeframes for them being the source don't necessarily add up at this point.

The Canadian ship still must surely be considered a highly possible source, and the sequencing is certainly going to be interesting when it comes out because if they were the source it will mean no genomic match with any existing cases.

For a nation in lock down there sure is a lot of aircraft in the air

Was made clear last night airnz are running on normal schedule, likely empty. To allow those away from home to return for 48hrs.

Although that may be true, still gives me shivers down the spine every time I think about this

That was confidently dismissed, they'd been 17 days at sea, fully vaccinated and tested - no cases.

Of course it's possible, but the "3-5 second open doors" transmission at Jet Park and the constant risk from overseas arrivals seems almost infinitely more likely.

It's all conjecture until sequencing/matching is complete.  If there's no local match, then we're up to the neck in sticky stuff.

Sure.  There's not a lot more that can be done unless a government would be prepared to deny people the right to return home within a reasonable window. Epidemiologically the best solution - but morally unacceptable and logistically a nightmare.  Maybe in China...

I was very surprised by the call to pause vaccinations for 48 hours.

IMO they should have been doing it out of cars as a drive thru from the start, incase this sort of thing occurred.

The problem is that any vaccination can cause immediate and severe reaction. Hence the requirement to hang around for 20 minutes after a vaccination in an observation area. You really don't want anyone to be driving at that stage.

wow...

Just listening to ZB and they had a caller who is the employer of the auckland nurses fiancee. He came into work as sick as a dog on monday and tuesday (his words) and had close contact with around 20 staff and customers. He's not heard from MOH and has been imploring those people to get tested.

Wow! What about the 'stay at home if you're sick' message??!!

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
