Stupidity knows no bounds. I guess one has to pay the local toilets or carpark or library by credit card in Coromandel

Covid-19: Coromandel mayor lax on scanning despite community scare | Stuff.co.nz

I guess the problem is that bank records are still a valid method used for contact tracing. Until we had the Covid app they were one of the primary methods.

There are still Countdown stores that have their (now very outdated) signage up telling people if they're not using electronic payments to make sure they sign in manually at checkout. You can't really blame people for saying these things if they're being presented information that tells them this.

The thing is, though, this isn't just Jo/Joe Blogs, but a community leader (and ex MP, but that's not necessarily saying much!). As such I think there's no excuse for this level of ignorance (if not arrogance) and it's a terrible example to set for the wider community, especially in an area directly relevant to this outbreak.

I saw in a later report she has tried to reframe her comments, which I still don't buy - https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2021/08/coromandel-mayor-sandra-goudie-backtracks-on-absolutely-ignorant-covid-tracer-app-comments.html

A complication right now is Allergy season. On the hills around where I live the Wattle trees are in bloom and everything has a yellow film. Our caravan is covered in it. Having a screwed immune system I have very bad Hayfever now, blocked Sinus, runny nose, cough etc.

@MikeB4 @sbiddle

i heard there's something called desensitization. not funded, have to pay. but hey if it gets rid of this, worth every cent.

need to do it in the winter though. so book it in for next year.

I finished my 3 years of immunotherapy in May. I highly recommend it for anybody with serious allergy issues.

I wonder if the pause in vaccinations is the reason why the vaccine booking website doesn't allow me to book, even though I am now in the age group that opened today.

Shouldn't be the case.

I managed to rebook my shots last evening as I was originally booked tomorrow.

I just checked the site now - no problems finding bookings for 50+ age group.

Funny how theres always a sudden influx of sick people needing testing AFTER the announcement. Sigh.

Yeah. I had my vaccination yesterday afternoon shortly after the news broke. I drove past a testing centre and there were no cars present. About 1 hour later when I drove past again on my way home, car park to testing centre was full and queue of about 6 cars on the road.

Holysss.....

Well. If that's anything to go by. We won't have 7. As most those new 20 somethings will have been super active. And with the NSW link, this is likely been away more than expected afterall.

And the current cases have been linked gnomically to the NSW outbreak.

Thanks NSW.

Government urgently sequencing positive Covid people in MIQ from Aussie and setting up to to call and re-test everyone who arrived back from Aussie recently before the borders shut.

If I heard right, only 3 cases picked up at the border/MIQ from NSW waiting for full sequencing. The cases in our cluster don't match any earlier sequenced cases that went through MIQ. If there's no match, then it's going to make tracing the NZ Index case much harder.

I'm glad that we went into immediate lockdown. I am glad that we're finding these cases. But I am expecting that lockdown will be extended 100%. I will also be expecting that this will likely drag out for at least a month if we're made to go even further back.

Ah - that was not coming up as an option in the system - it asked "are you aged 50 or older" - not over 40.

Just re-checked, it now says 40 or older.  Try again now if that was the issue.

Fortunately QLD seem to be on top of it, so far at least (no new local cases today or yesterday, 1 in last 5 days).

ACT (+22) and Vic (+24) still a worry, though.

snowfly:

As above, Case A (Devonport 56 year old) might not be the source.
This could be a key sentence in that article:

"He did know that the flatmate who worked with the Devonport tradesman, his father had recently returned from Australia."

So possibly:

  1. Father of flatmate returns from AU, passes onto flatmate 1
  2. Flatmate 1 passes onto 56 year old tradesman employer
  3. Flatmate 1 passes onto other 3 flatmates (incl Nurse + Teacher)

The source will be nice to know but its not that important. When we find it today or tomorrow or next week, we can look at the gap that allowed the leak and rectify it

The only thing that matters now is not the deets of these cases (albeit important) but that everyone else is self isolating.

7x7x7x7...

Agree, but here is another equation

A house of 4

It will be either

0x0x0x0x0 as self isolating, or

1x3x0x0 as one was infected now they all are, but the trick is no-one else is, as if we all self isolate this example won't be a 7x7x7x7x7

Your example is the flouter equation I guess. Maybe 14 days will clear this in AKL, but the flouter side will extend it, as the virus gets continual opportunities

Its an embarrassingly simple solution. If everyone did self isolate, its gone. Just like that

Technofreak: Some reports are suggesting the nurse may be the initial community case, or that this outbreak came from an infected MIQ person being treated at Auckland hospital.

That leads me asking why are we taking MIQ people particularly those with known infection our public hospitals for treatment?

Aren't we just asking for an outbreak?

Why don't we have a dedicated facility just for this purpose? Perhaps something like a military hospital. Yes, I know it will cost to have it sitting there, but the costs of an outbreak are significant and the lockdown is extremely disruptive.

Hospitals deal with infectious diseases all the time. If, as you assume, Auckland hospital can't keep its staff safe from covid, what makes you think a military hospital could?
