I went to a countdown around 11am this morning, Was pretty quiet and shelves were all full.

I would say around 90% of people were not wearing masks including quite a few staff.

That better change next time I am in there, Some people could just care less.

@sbiddle:

I real don't understand our new mask laws.

Months of talking about it and all the Govt can come up with is mandating these while visiting some essential services. That's like a 1/10 attempt for effort.

Because at Covid Alert Level 4 only essential services would be open anyway?

If I recall correctly from last year the number of "essential workers" (ie those getting up every day and leaving home to go to work still) was estimated at something like 350,000 people.

Not everybody is working from home, and the vast majority of those people don't interact with the public - but they do interact with each other.

There is no requirement to wear masks today. Cabinet only agreed on a new health order after meeting today and that comes into effect at 11:50 tonight.

Radio NZ - Conspiracy theorist Billy TK arrested at anti-lockdown protest

breaking

Former Public Party leader Billy Te Kahika has been taken away by five police officers at a protest in Central Auckland.

About 100 maskless people were gathered at an "anti-lockdown protest" outside the TVNZ buildings.

Police said they arrested four people in relation to breaching the Health Act notice following the protest.

Sooooo it's still an essential business. Expectation of staff also wearing. Sure, not a retail front say. But it's indoors. Soooo that's  still covered by the requirement...

IE, all the news room staff on tv this afternoon.

/edit. Seems someone differs from the PMs quote. She said anyone that is open for essential services.

Unite-against facey says anyone if businesses involve customer contact.

Re: Lockdown protest.

So 100 out of 5.1 million?

Hardly even qualifies as a ‘squeaky wheel’.

The new requirement is very simple -

"You legally must wear a face covering if you are an employee or customer at a business or service operating at Alert Level 4 involving customer contact."

That covers a very small percentage of people..

Doesn't really change anything with the path though does it?

NZ Vaccination levels and the state of the virus internationally will determine the border settings. In that respect nothing has changed. Pretty naive to expect no outbreaks between now and that time.

Two government ministers (Robertson and Nash) stated there will still be lockdowns even when everyone is vaccinated, on breakfast radio this morning. Which is unfortunate, because there will be a certain section of the community that will now say why bother getting vaccinated if we’re still going to be locked down.

Just like people were out moving and travelling prior to 11.59 pm last night, because of the delay in bringing in the law. But the PM did say today that people know what is the right thing to be doing, and there is a delay before changes to laws come in. . NZers seem to love exploiting loopholes, but now it's not the time to do this. The virus doesn't work to any timetables so people should be doing the right thing before the laws come in.

While I agree the order should actually state a mask needs to be worn in any indoor environment that isn't your home; at the very least the current order does cover where you would interact with the public/people unknown to you. In any other workplace where people might still be gathering during AL4, you at least know the people there which makes tracing easier; and there are other restrictions and measures presumably in place.

But far simpler and more effective to have said everyone must wear a mask if they're inside something that isn't their home IMO.

You'll see I added to post soon after.

I guess it's the difference to someone who largely thinks as an empathetic, vs not so much.

I read and got it from her quote, not what it's been translated to "If you are in a place that is allowed to be open to provide services to people, or transport, you must wear a mask,"

As, even if you're at an office. Or workplace. Or operating because you're required to make the world go around, You're doing it to provide a service to others. So also need to among each others - no more work bubbles.

We've all been told to at our business, and I do tomorrow despite being a behind the scenes operation in essentially a locked room. Guess as a result of the alternate understanding not many others will.

But they can't not say that... because then you'd have certain people complaining they thought lockdowns would be a thing of the past if people got vaccinated and "why isn't the government being upfront?".

The reality is that public health interventions will always be (and were always going to be) a part of reality, even once we have a significant number of jabs in arms. This has always been the case, and I don't think any one has ever said otherwise.

Also, these people are stupid. As is Heather du Plessis Allen with her "what's the incentive to get the vaccine".

I didn't see that. But if full population vaccination brings case numbers and death numbers down to what they would normal get for the flu, then I do wonder what the plan is going be long term as other countries live with it. We should be planning more hospital and ICU capacity now, if they aren't already doing that. They have that 18 months to do this. NZs hospital capacity is one of the main reasons we have no choice but to follow an elimination path.

Unsurprising, but:

More community cases

Hipkins told RNZ just moments ago there are several new community cases to report since the 1pm update. There are reportedly less than 10 so far.

“We're seeing more cases coming through, I don't have details but yes, I can confirm that we have further positive test results since the press conference.”
