I didn't see that.

I’m not surprised :-). It was on breakfast radio. NewstalkZB at 0710 for Robertson and 0810 for Nash to be precise.

In ACT's case, a 'mini-surge' on day 2 (ditto here), a lull for a day or two, then the infected contacts but previously pre-symptomatic / not tested starred coming through.

Cases coming thick and fast earlier, could suggest more widespread infection in the wild at the time case 1 tested positive?

We got 1 case and locked down, the global response is pretty much W T F. 1 case actually means many cases, infected by the 1, and thus added more each. Takes days to see that. So the lockdown was correct.

Lockdowns elsewhere favoured businesses, that's a fail, the lockdowns here favoured health and that worked out very very well for businesses.

Based on what has happened and it being linked back to Australia, is this likely to be a case of the Trans-tasman bubble ending up costing NZ billions of dollars with lockdowns? I always thought it was going to be a game of Russian Roulette when they don't have the same elimination policies that NZ has, and that our luck would finally run out. IMO while we were unvaccinated, traveling overseas during the middle of a pandemic for mainly recreation was never a wise decision.

Yep. Argue that months ago and you would be cut to threads. Hindsight, but I agree. No economic benefit, maybe allow it for family, then that becomes hard to admin.

Just a week ago we were setting out our path to opening borders.

This still applies, I don't get your point.

You can order them as they've got them listed as "essential" , so can be couriered

OTOH is having a working front door security cam needed right now?

Yes, agree with all that. Lockdown on first case is what ACT did also.  I agree with the lockdown decision.  Post was more about the progression following lockdown.  Yes, there clearly are more out there, but how many?  if there are large numbers cases will likely ramp up quickly.  A slower ramp up may mean fewer cases out there so lockdown will not need to be so long (though hard to see it being for less than 2 weeks in AKL at least, given the current numbers coming through, and with the nature and numbers of places of interest).

There was no 'point'. It was just a comment. It's not in the news today.

Yeah I know, but where I live let's just say it's a really good idea.

Same. Due to Covid workload I missed the 1PM and the news. But seeing the end of the news now it all seems a rampant news fest. Theoretically a 14 day AKL lockdown is needed, so that most of them are safe, or if infected keep the others safe. I dont care if they get 20 tomorrow and 50 the next day as long as ALL of them are self isolated. Thats the only real tool for prevention. Other tools are for control over what is often flouter issues. If you want to suffocate something you starve it from what it needs. Covid needs people mingling. Some of these new places of interest are a worry. But even then, if they all lockdown, it can be beat. Think of the lockdown as a national MIQ. MIQ given the well over 100,000 from at risk countries has worked. Last midnight is little different. The flouters need to be taken down though.

To make it into a discussable point, the opening up is the end game. That applied last Thursday as well as this Thursday. This outbreak changes nothing.

I guess I was just thinking about the trial this side of Christmas and if any Countries (Australia) might not want us at the moment. Watch this space.
