Batman:

If that's the case wouldn't it be easier to use an app that tracks everywhere I go?

Easier - but nearly completely useless. If you've been reading the news or this thread, that's been explained time and time again.

Fred99: True.  However for the the majority of us with cellphones that can run the app, it's going to beat the hell out of manually providing contact details each time.

Of course there will still be a few nutters - "john and jane does" with contact number 012 345678 who think the whole thing is a great big conspiracy.

Just hopefully the nutters don't delete the scan once they are in the store or that they make contact with the tracing team if they get an alert and just don't ignore it.

Apart from Cafes and Concerts it will be interesting on what other places with be mandatory.

Many times Google Location has had me at the wrong address, or not picked up that I've been at multiple neighbouring businesses, and it's no good for shopping malls. I've had to correct/add/tweak so many entries.

Not sure why people seem to think it's better than/as good as/a replacement for scanning a QR code.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Batman: "At some point we will have to start to be more open in the future and the Prime Minister said some of the area, a few weeks ago for us. It will include making sure that we've got very high vaccination rates, the more people that get vaccinated, then the more options we're going to have."

It isn't just vaccination. It is also hospital and ICU capacity that will need increasing, including staff. I don't know how much the government has been doing in buying up ventilators and building new hospital capacity to cope with living with teh virus, as living with it will increase demand on the health system. Especially if we don't get to a very high vaccination numbers. NZs biggest problem IMO is that our health system runs at peak capacity most of the time. Australia's health system is overall better and they are a richer country, so they can cope better with Covid and outbreaks.

If you live in Dunedin and are wanting a vaccination shot, just head on down to the drive through vaccination station that has been set up at the Edgar center. Had two family members done this weekend. With queueing and the 20 minute wait at the end, they were still home in 40 minutes or so. No appointment needed.

What do people think about retail (incl supermarkets) being largely exempt from the new QR scanning rules when they come into play?

Much like the mask laws which only mandate mask wearing in indoor locations with customers/public this all seems like we're not really willing to learn anything from the rest of the world and still think we beat Covid and we're the best.

Seems a bit dumb not including the supermarkets. It's a place with high traffic and therefore I'd have though a greater chance of transmission. I can see why the supermarkets might not want to run a register but what's good for the goose is good for the gander. if the little guy has to do it so should the big guy.

Just been to our local New World. They could learn a QR code placement lesson or two from the local Mitre 10.  They have a few scattered about the place BUT you don't see then unless you go looking for them, unlike Mitre 10 that have massive in your face QR codes that you can scan from some distance as you walk past.

I think most people won't understand the new rules and will just think scanning is mandatory everywhere. I am sure people will also be called out for not scanning in supermarket, Plus can't supermarkets require it anyway, as they don't have to let people in.

IMO the government should have made scanning mandatory AGES ago. I recall writing on here well before the lockdown, that it wold probably take another outbreak and lockdown for scanning to become mandatory, beucase NZ is an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff country. It is possible we could have avoided such a long lockdown if everyone had been scanning and contact tracing having everyones records of movement. PLus if everyone had been getting tested if they had cold and symptoms. It is ridiculous scannig wasn't mandatory. People would have got used it it and had muscle memory to do it each time they went into any building.

The same Mitre 10 which has been making staff come in during level 4 to do stocktakes, despite having about 1000 of them from all over the country attend an event with a confirmed case a week earlier?

I have observed far more people flouting the rules this time. I saw a whole group of people out the some shops socialising when going for a walk. Then seen reports of streets having street meetups, and complaints about Karens dobbing them in and police being involved. Then there are people driving around, looking at houses etc.  I think based on the number of cases we are getting so quickly after the 1st case, that the estimates of 100 cases is far less than we are going to get. I think Auckland coul dbe in lockdown for some time. Hopefully the rest of NZ can come out by the end of this week, or after next weekend, down to a level 3 or 3.5.

If we are seeing this at Level4, I don't want to see how bad it will be at a lower level!

The supermarket I frequent make you queue up and you either scan before you enter or you write your details.
