James Bond:

My local green grocer is open and operating. Not sure why some can't as per reports.

Butchers and greengrocers are only allowed to operate as online contactless delivery.

It seems plenty of smaller greengrocers that also stock other food are just opening, and to be honest differentiating some from a dairy would be pretty difficult. Bakeries finally got their exemption for contactless delivery on Friday after earlier being told they couldn't open.

MBIE said this morning they basically don't care now so it's anything goes really..

As I have said before , Kiwis love to find loopholes.

Technofreak: This article isn't complementary of the government's management of the pandemic and it explains why they are focussed on elimination.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/bryce-edwards-political-roundup-the-governments-covid-preparedness-under-scrutiny/GSARWZ3WBZ447XGOZ32IS3TP7Q/

Bryce Edwards publishing articles that aren't complimentary of the labour government? I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you!

This belongs in the politics thread.

New Zealand won’t get to 90% vaccination. There is no reason to think this is feasible.

But New Zealand is different.

I bet it's not. I'm pretty sure it'll end up with vaccination rates much the same as other countries.

No it's because it's gotten away on them and they know they can't put the genie back in the bottle.

The NZ government has started on the early stages of similar messaging which shows they have similar concerns.

It didn't get away from them, their business first policy took it away.

The Pfizer vaccine now has full FDA approval.

https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine

Full approval by Medsafe in NZ (and TGA in Australia) should be more or less automatic.

whether it is or not i don't know.

what i do know is the lockdown has given time and space to more people to spread alternate realities on my social media.

Scott3:

The pause in vaccinations was pretty strong evidence that the government is betting on success in eliminating the virus.

But I don't think anybody without insider knowledge can say that there isn't a plan B. And if there isn't, it can be made up on the fly.

Sadly any plan B isn't likely to be that attractive.

I would pick dialing back to alert level 3, accepting a bunch of deaths and hospitalizations, while we vaccinate at cira 400k doses a week, untill we reach about 8m doses given out incl the 2.6m allready done (or we run out of willing people). That's about 13.4 weeks. Takes us through to the end of November. We are going into summer at that point, so likely we would further relax restrictions at that point, and take to bouncing between alert levels 1 & 2 to manage hospital load.

I think they will just stick to lockdown for as long as needed. Theoretically, spread stopped when lockdown started. Hoover up the pre lockdown cases. Sounds simple if you say it fast! Given that cases aren't blowing out big time, and it basically only Auckland and not also Coromandel it seems, its looking somewhat contained. If AKL had 3 weeks of Level 4, any asymptomatic people at home should be cured. The danger was a good number of hotspots scattered around NZ but that hasn't happened, but it could do due to the grace days of returning home. If we continue to hammer vaccinations, that's a growing backup. Summer will also help.

We do get to about 85-90% with childhood immunisation.

Batman: It's strange that Wellington and Auckland contacts are testing positive but none in Coromandel?

Traffic past here was 30% UP! on a normal weekday compared to the last traffic count in Fed 19 done by the CCC.

I thought it was busy!

And the School in the Street isn't even open! (Over 1500Students and no School Buses)

Lockdown - What Lockdown!

Are you in Christchurch? My street is between two major roads and it does look busy however Google Maps data shows mostly green traffic conditions. I'm guessing most people are going to get their groceries? or essential workers.

He is, Hornby-ish. I'm in Aidanfield Drive and a low but steady stream of traffic. All heading North. Could be the New World they are going to, I cant think of any businesses that can operate more at work this lockdown than the last one.

Yes - Christchurch. Does not explain the noticeable 30% increase though. They say Stay @ Home! & Shop Less!

I live in Merivale and I am basically a stones throw from Hagley Park. Can confirm traffic has picked up more and more every day with more foot traffic and more people not wearing masks or socially distancing. I am fairly sure that Christchurch is fed up with this lockdown but we're in lockdown for a reason...
