I think we are just a small matter of time away from seeing similar complete lockdowns in NZ, especially once our flu season gets underway.

I dont want that. Our exposure is really low. 8 cases, all imported, no community infection (that will happen). We have two issues. Covid-19 and the economy. With the virus being really low here, id rather go for complete lockdown at the border first. NZ nationals allowed in, 21 day quarantine where the Wuhan people went. Negative test required before release. Very few reasons for non nationals , also forced 21 day quarantine. So we can then say, we will not be importing any more.

With zero virus imports we can manage any local outbreaks well. If there was one in Taihape, every house is locked down, cannot leave fence line, no shops. Govt can work with the two supermarket chains for online and delivery.

The Italys of this world were reactive. Lockdown, which included being allowed to go to work, shops open till 6pm. That just means that its locked down after 6pm, and loose during the day.

they anchor there, its was shown in the video on the news the anchor was down.

most are not dynamic positioning ships, the thrusters etc are for maneuvering not for holding position.

There are 2 anchorages for ships with greater than 8m draft. and ECAN are pretty stringent with the use of thrusters and dynamic positioning systems in there and use should be kept to a minimum.

Airlines even placing larger planes to facilitate it. To me, it is asking for trouble. It should have been a fait accompli - "self-isolation starts now".

Community transmission has definitely started. It may take another week to show definitely but it's happening.

It doesn't make sense to me , even after watching the MOH video today. I would have thought these people would want to impose some form of self isolation anyway incase they are a carrier for it, so they don't risk spreading it to anyone else, if they do have it, as some are coming from areas where community transmission is occuring. I was reading some of the incoming people paid a lot of extra money to change their tickets, so they could get in earlier to avoid the self isolation deadline. They are all apparently being talked to as they come in to check and assess them, but they are apparently not checking peoples temperatures. However you can be a carrier for up to 14 days as it incubates, before you start to show symptoms. It will be interesting to see how the cases develop in NZ.

Crossing fingers community transmissions don't start to occur.

Surely customs will want proof of where you will be spending your 14 days isolation. So tourists even if they plan on skipping isolation will still have to book a hotel room for two weeks to get into the country.

I imagine over the next couple of weeks there will be a couple of cases of people skipping isolation that will hit the media. The govt will look bad and at that point start being stringent on it, with daily checks etc.

They probably want to run with the voluntary thing to start with so they don't come across as facist.

my wife says someone complained to the Herald that today (this morning) he flew into AKL and there was zero checks on anything - he walked straight through and out.

so ... yeah good luck with that thought.

As I see it, the Kiwis came back early. if there was no announcement, they come back next week or the week after, also with no self isolation requirement. Aussies coming here for a family event, the same. IMO it doesn't really matter. They circumvented a 14 day that they would not be doing anyway.

So, I just take this as an annoyance, not an effect. Someone here said its maybe allowed time for repatriation by Kiwis, maybe. The key is, in 4.5 hours, we have blocked the world, that's more the news than this anomaly.

There is no doubt community transmission will occur. Inevitable. Look at our record to date. Per capita its excellent. When we have one, same process. Isolation and close contact tracking. If needed, shut down the town, full.Not like Italy, shut it down. A 14 or 21 day weekend, NOTHING open. Harsh but brief. Harsh to shut it down, brief to spare the economy and sanity if we can.

Yeah - I saw that they had dropped anchor on the news. There was a fuss about them leaving engines running and using thrusters etc to hold position last year - maybe they changed under pressure.

Anyway, apart from environmental damage from anchoring and environmental risk, and the fact that they're an epidemic health hazard to be on - even before this epidemic, they're an absolutely horrific eyesore. We make too many allowances for them in NZ in search of the almighty tourist dollar - there's no flipping way these things should be allowed in Fiordland etc. any more than someone should be able to set up a Club Med or Trump golf resort there. Anyway - off topic - and for the passengers, despite their stupid decision to board a cruise ship a few days ago, they may need our aid - and I'll support whatever we end up having to do to save them from consequences of their stupid decision. So long as not one of them is let loose in my town and the plan is to send them home ASAP.

If yesterdays announcement was next weekend, what happens then? I do agree that it would have been better to make it immediate, but IMHO it doesnt really matter, the key is tonights block

The block should've been yesterday at press conference start. Everyone after that self-isolate. As it is it left gates open for 36 hours for people coming from places where the virus has already spread.

That sounds all very nice but is totally impractical. There needed to be so time to allow tourists to cancel flights and for the authorities to get systems in place. One day's worth of extra arrivals isn't going to make a huge amount of difference.

If they prepared in secret then it would have definitely leaked and all sorts of rumours would have started.

Umm Australia imposed the ban straightaway (well midnight of the day of announcement)

How do you manage people already in transit? Long haul flights are up to 19 hours to Auckland. They will have no way to self isolate and NZ doesn't physically have enough hotel space.

Australia may have a plan around it but it's more likely to be chaos.
