Umm Australia imposed the ban straightaway (well midnight of the day of announcement)

How do you manage people already in transit? Long haul flights are up to 19 hours to Auckland. They will have no way to self isolate and NZ doesn't physically have enough hotel space.

Australia may have a plan around it but it's more likely to be chaos.

They may have to return to the country they came from. It is not unusual for someone to be refused entry and to go back on the next flight back to their country of origin. Or maybe the government will take then to a quarantine area.

Last March an average of 8700 international visitors arrived in NZ every day in March. That's a lot of people to have to suddenly find extra acoomidation.

Also in the big picture 1 more day won't make much difference.

It's good that it's done, but I'm not going to criticize the government for giving the airlines and people to adjust to a huge change.

Except Immigration or the Airlines end up footing the bill for such actions/border rejected people. Likely another reason they are racing to make the deadline and get many people across the line should that occur.

But, we don't know. Only those in the know and people arriving around the time will find out first hand.

Immigration New Zealand will pay the return cost for passengers from visa-required countries when necessary. The passengers have to pay back any debt and are not granted a visa to travel back to New Zealand until it is paid.

Spain and France have both instigated increased lockdowns with all but essential service closed.

I think we are just a small matter of time away from seeing similar complete lockdowns in NZ, especially once our flu season gets underway.

Yep.  I think it's going to be closer than that (flu season).  I'd be very surprised if we're not in lockdown with schools etc closed and public gatherings banned by the end of the month.

Sorry to say: ... by end of the week - latest.

It was chartered and boarded in Melbourne, Australia.

Well that's unfortunate timing.  We can't send it back there - cruise ships are now banned from Aussie ports.

A check of several of the real time ship tracking sites show the vessel has departed Akaroa and is returning to its embarkation port of Melbourne...

What planes do you.an on putting these people on? While it is not unusual to have to turn around one or two people from a flight there physically isn't anywhere to put them in return flights.

Similarly where is the quarantine facility for 2000 people?

Hrm, also says ETA 20th, lacking Akaroa and Wellington as destination. Not that long a trip back I would have thought. Be interesting to keep an eye on in the next few days

Just seen on Napier News (a Facebook group) from someone alledgedly on board that the test came back negative and the ship has commenced the journey back to Australia. He’s disappointed he won’t be able to visit his home town.

Except a few thousand people just flooded in before the lockdown from infected countries with no self isolation requirement. I’m not sure community transmission is as far off as you think. It may already be occurring.

Community transmission has definitely started. It may take another week to show definitely but it's happening.

Be assured, it's in no way different to us. Anything else would be naive. Again, stay calm, flat the curve and take responsibility for your fellows.

It's not the time for politicians and money, it's the time of the medical experts - listen to them. The sooner this is understood, the better.

That's about right.  About 1700 nautical miles at say 20 knots puts them in Melbourne some time on the 20th.

Will seem quite long if you get a slight sore throat, cough, bit of a fever, sense of impending doom, shortness of breath etc.  Probably need to go to the bar.
