Fred99: Heh. Thought alcohol content needed to be 60% for hand sanitiser. Would need to be very small sips and constant use of a spittoon, then I guess your entire mouth lining and gums would peel like a tomato in boiling water - or worse.

Scott3:
Good news. My cousins in law have all now recovered from delta strain covid-19. Infection was mentioned many pages back. I am now willing to disclose the vaccine they had was sinovac.
- Entire household was fully vaccinated with sinovac excepting a child who could not be vaccinated due to age.
- Virus infected entire household. They suspect the source was a food delivery person (motorbike rider in that location).
- Child was the only person that needed to be admitted to hospital.
- The rest of them were still hit pritty hard. Bedridden and using whatever they could think of to help with comfort. In that location, you can't count on getting admitted to hospital reliably, so they had stuff like oxygen bottles delivered to them so they could fight it at home.
That is good news but a quick google on the effectiveness of Chinese Sinovac vaccine suggests it is not as effective as other vaccines. Especially with the Delta variant. Though it is hard to quantify as China likes to keep statistical data close.
Concerning your cousins and they being fully vaccinated but still having a very rough time of it suggests that maybe the Sinovac vaccine is not as good against the Delta variant as other vaccines.
Other more knowledgable members in these forum might be able to better clarify.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Eva888: Andrew Little on AM show...sounds like the government is planning on loosening their response to Covid. He admitted that even the vaccinated can get it and they are considering a change in strategy whereby the ill can stay home and opening borders. No more elimination policy. I think this will encourage many more to get jabbed knowing that there is a stronger likelihood of infection. What a surprise this was.
This isn't a new strategy, it's been the discussion for months.
It is a shift in part of the strategy. While there has been a loose 'plan' to open up, this was still tied to a long term elimination strategy. The messaging was poor however - but clearly there was an expectation from the government that they could both open up and maintain elimination.
New Zealand to pursue Covid elimination strategy indefinitely, says Ardern
Even as recently as this week the PM and others in the government were still saying elimination long term was the strategy.
The shift starting here is moving away from elimination being 'indefinite' to shorter term until vaccination rates are up.
The fact there has been another MIQ leak announced today shows that an elimination strategy reliant on border controls to keep the virus out of the country long term wasn't going to work, and certainly you wouldn't be able to relax any of the current border controls.

Why do we wash our hands? AFAIK it breaks the membrane of the virus and its killed. Same reason why if the virus is left on cardboard, the membrane dries up. I would have thought an inhaler that acts similar may be helpful.

Love headlines from The Guardian (not - it's a trash news site full of clickbait).
She didn't say what the headline implies she did, or they'd have put that within quotation marks in the article - much of what is formally quoted either contradicts what's implied by the headline, or is far more nuanced.
"Even as recently as this week" - actually was more than a month ago.
Fake news site. Many people don't read past the headlines any more. They know that. Sad, as occasionally they have interesting stuff not covered by other media. Sometimes that's because other media simply don't believe the "scoops" they're being offered by freelancers etc.
Something else I read further back in this thread re targeting zero covid deaths as a policy. Makes sense in context of other public health measures, most people would have some familiarity with OSH, nobody writes a policy saying that we'll plan to have 20 deaths and 200 injuries as our goal next year. Both are set with with a target of zero, even if everybody knows that can never be achieved.
Eva888:
Get vaccinated, lose the fear and get on with life. I hope the government allows this to finally happen.
Sounds good, but please wait until everyone has been able to get vaccinated. That time is not yet here. Many vaccinated people, especially those who got it early in the cycle, don't quite understand that group 4 bookings had a long wait. I'm hearing more and more people tell me that if you aren't fully vaccinated by now its your own stupid fault.
Eva888:
Life in fear can’t go on this way and a new response is needed. What ifs are always going to be with us. What if a helicopter falls on my house and kills me, what if I get hepatitis at my next cafe visit or get bitten by a mosquito and get Ross River Fever and don’t survive. Living has risks attached.
Good news! Lockdown can reduce your fear levels. Specifically, you don't need to fear Ross River Fever now! It is found in Australia, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the South Pacific but not in New Zealand
Lockdown is also good to limit the spread of covid, so we don't need to fear that either.

So far 35.2 percent of eligible Kiwis (12-plus) have had two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and 68.8 percent at least one.
Pretty good. The one jabbers will be booked in anytime from next week for the second jab to a few weeks, so in a few weeks, based only on the data today, 68.8% of 12+ would be full vaccinated. Add to that the newbies getting their first , so probably nicely over 70% in 3 to 6 weeks.
Suppose it depends on how many 'residents' and visitors the gang pad has.
Some people also view that after X days a group of people mixing should be all good to go, but of course that's not the case.
A chain of transmission one person to next 'not isolating from each other' could burn on for a long time.
Of course they all have families and probably as is becoming normal in Auckland extended family live in a front room or garage, or motel room.
Wonder how many of the Tough and Tattooed got vaccinated ?
Aucklands problem for a return to normal is rest of country may revolt unless we truly get a handle in it.
Does rest of NZ without community spread want to give up so Auckland can stop isolating ?
Probably not, we will be greeted by pitchforks at Mercer.
14 cases
All household contacts, 3 had exposure events

The continuing high proportion of exposure events is a bit concerning.
Seems a high proportion four weeks into L4 lockdown.
