Countdown, The Valley, New Plymouth...

Called in there on the way home from work on Monday evening...

  • No queue outside - good start.
  • Plenty of stock on the shelves - even better.
  • Shoppers being very polite and courteous to each other - you little ripper, best shop under lock down so far.

Sadly it went tits up big time at the checkout though when it was time to pay...

  • I (honestly) did not know you weren't allowed to bring in reusable bags anymore.
  • I was abused by the checkout operator.
  • Told to throw my bags on the ground in front of my trolley (which I laughed at).
  • Screamed at for not reading the signs outside the store (there were none!).
  • Accused of ignoring the security guard's verbal message (there was none!).
  • Told I should have seen the news or the FB post (recall that I'd been working since 5:00 a.m. that day, and I don't even have a FB account!).

After paying for the stuff I needed I just told her that she's doing a good job and I know it must be stressful for everyone, smiled and walked out.

I'm working. I can shop 7 later afternoons a week. 7 nights a week. Heaps of opportunities.

But not tomorrow, everything will be shut for the Easter Good Friday holiday. 😱

Cue screaming, running around in circles crying "no shopping tomorrow", panic buying again etc
:-(

Sigh

Ive got my garage of panic bought toilet paper, and 3 tonnes of flour, so baking hot cross buns it is!  :-)

Peoples unwillingness or inability to plan is just mind-boggling...

That may be the way you think, but others can think differently.  IMO, planning is overrated; when plans are necessary, ok, but I prefer to keep options open to the last possible moment.  The diversity of people's approaches to life is a good thing, and shouldn't boggle anyone's mind.

It's a state of emergency, people need to be thinking full stop. It's not the usual situation. Your choice affects many other people right now.

Yes, it's terrible

One of my children has come "for the duration" and is Working From My Home.
He says I am not allowed to go to the shops on account of being old & at risk, and he is doing the shopping.
This is all very fine and is very nice of them, but he says that means one shopping trip a week, like the PM recommends.

Oh no, we have to plan ahead, in advance, what we're going to eat and identify the other things we might run out of 😱
For a whole week! 😱 😱

No more just popping out on the bike every day and buying tonight's dinner depending what's on special this morning.

First world problems, eh
😂

Wife just got back from New World Birkenhead for a small top-up shop. There was a long line to get in, and she said most things were in stock (bar flour). However it did cost a bit more - a box of Panadol which usually costs $4.50 was $6. Otherwise it went mostly okay.

Moore Wilson's, Lower Hutt, has been great. Longest line I've hit before today was was three people. We're not going near the big retail chains simply because there are too many people there. Mainly buying perishables online. Mainly buying dry goods at Moore Wilson's.

Today it was really "bad" because it appears that a lot of new clients appeared today: I was number 12 in the queue and had to wait a whole 8 minutes to get in; it has 3m aisles but adults were shopping in pairs, one on each side of the aisle, or moving down the centre of the aisle; others were not prepared to walk to the other side of the aisle to pass shoppers.

Followed advice I saw somewhere and found flour at the dairy today. Didn't see a price and bought a few things so don't know exact price but looked to be roughly $5-6. Its a Countdown branded bag, price isn't visible on their site since out of stock but the same Pam's is $1.99. I know dairies have a big markup but 3x the price? Hmmm..

I am hoping that the crowds on Thursday might mean that I don't get stuck in a long queue when I go to the supermarket on Saturday. Possibly wishful thinking, but I remain optimistic!

surfisup1000:

I'm thinking presta valve tubes are the incarnation of evil! Can't use the petrol station air pumps, have to use a special pump, benefits for general cycling are pretty much 0.

You can get a small screw-in adapter which allows you to use a standard petrol station pump (Schrader). Left one in this product image:

It's funny that you should say that, as I'm having to get into this whole 'planning' thing too. The PM advised to 'shop normally', but since I live just around the corner from the supermarket, 'normal' for me was going in there every other day and just getting a handful of things. Obviously not sustainable with the present arrangement!

Normal for me was going into town once every fortnight and panic shopping the trolley to overflowing. Now that would just get me dirty looks.
