Batman:

it seems restriction tactic is working in nsw.

governor said if 90% vaccinated no restrictions no passport.

just checked and 85+% over 16 have had their 1st dose.

The vaccination rates in NSW are really impressive. They are still in for a very bad time when they reopen but it'll be much better than it could have been.

Yeah I agree that it's impossible on grounds of medical ethics, but regardless of that, if it was even suggested that Mangere or Mt Wellington should be locked down to "level 5" while Mission Bay and Remuera party hard in oyster bars, apart from being futile it'd probably cause riots.

But it's quite OK for Wellsford and GBI to be locked down while Hamilton and Te Puke party on?

Nothing about the pandemic is OK. It is what it is.

vaccine passport (APP) being developed, available soon

some people better buy smartphones. i have one i can sell you.

should probably have its own thread when it's confirmed

I imagine it will follow the same basic formula as the EU Digital Covid Certificate.

Which can be either App based or paper based. Crux of it is that the phone (or paper) displays a QR code, which can be scanned with another device to verify the legitimacy of the certificate. Having a paper based option is pretty essential for NZ. I imagine most of the coding work will be going into the back end (the database / verification system on government servers).

How much back end coding is needed? I would think a vaccine passport QR code would just need to to contain ones name, vaccination date and perhaps a date of birth. You can already request a paper certificate from the government with your vaccine details on. They can post you a QR code instead.

The important thing is that it is encrypted to prevent fake QR codes being produced. Then ones name can be compared to a tradional piece of ID to ensure one is not borrowing someone else's QR code. It would be rather easy to add the decript keys to the covid ap so it can be used to check passport QR codes.

Seems a little stupid that we obviously aren't incorporating it into the existing Covid app.

+This

If this isn't rolled into the tracing app MoH developers should be lined up for the revolution...

So it's not possible with the current privacy model of the Covid app which guarantees you're anonymous.

Singapore

Has a very high rate of fully vaccinated people, but cases are rapidly rising. But. "With 82% of the population fully vaccinated, about 98% of the coronavirus cases in the past four weeks had no or mild symptoms, it said in a report a day earlier."

Health system is stretched as many are seeking hospital care when its not necessary. If the 98% of vaccinated are getting none or mild symptoms, does that mean that long Covid is also much improved? If you are fully vaccinated and you get a no symptom or mild symptom infection, is that a nice boost to the immune system?

I've been to Singapore. Had a minor diarrhoea and was prescribed 5 meds

One for stopping the diarrhoea
One for pain
One to stop vomiting
One to stop cough
One for electrolytes

I said thanks I don't need anything.

Just carried on and led a normal tourist life.

The expectations of the patients there are that they get treatment for every symptom. Just some context.

And that is really what it is going to come down to for us in the future, being vaccinated meaning little or no impact on that vaccinated persons overall health. The stress for us will be those that are not vaccinated and the impact they have on the health services and the follow on impact on the rest of us when, or if, we suddenly require urgent hospital care.

True. If the 50+ group are heavily vaccinated, and going by Singapore's data, you would hope that hospital care would be minimal. The unvaccinated, and the 20-30 group seems to be the lowest of jab stats, also would probably not be heavily affected. All speculation of course, but Singapore data does give an insight.

I disagreed with the decision to take AKL from L4 to L3, when I think one more week would have been a much better option from a health perspective. I am concerned they may go ahead with L2 on Tuesday, in the middle of school holidays, when we are still having cases, but more importantly unlinked cases. I think if they went to L2, then they need to shut the borders around Auckland nice and tight. It will happen during school holidays, and this is usually a time that Aucklanders leave Auckland with their families. I feel this would basically would mean the past few weeks of lockdown would be a complete waste of time.

I suspect that on Monday the prime minister might announce that Auckland is to stay in L3 for one more week and will then move to L2.

Setting an end date in the near future would be an effective way of squeezing out the last bit of compliance out of Aucklanders before they understandably get to the point where they've had enough.

The fact people came out and said that the rest of NZ won't move to level 1 whilst Auckland is level 3 really painted themselves into a corner.

"There are 45 new Covid cases in the community today, including 12 unlinked 'mystery' cases.

Director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said it was the largest number of cases we'd had in some time.

A total of 33 are household or close contacts of existing cases and weren't infectious in community.

"In some sense they were expected," Bloomfield said.

Twelves were cases were unlinked but for six of those, some links were visible"

I don't think MoH and co have this "under control" as they like to keep saying.

Delta is hard to beat, especially if the gangs are involved.
