MadEngineer: I can’t see us reaching 90% vaccinated when we barely make that number for kids of other vaccines, which are pretty much automatic.

It's not that hard. Places who don't play mr nice guy have done it.

But if you are worried about offending people/voters it can be a problem. What? Politics? Who did it to NSW? What happened next? Yup.

But PM is smart. Let's see what they can come up with.

My bet is level 3 for Auckland until the end of the week (at least), and revisit it then.

GV27:

Level 3 for another period of time is not in doubt, the real question is 'how long for'?

Until the anti-vaxxers or so-called "uncertain" idiots stop holding the majority to ransom.

...which would be a great way to torch any goodwill the public still has towards obeying lockdowns.

Not to say that probably isn't the right thing to do, but just perhaps not one that people will stomach for much longer.

There isn't really a 'everybody wins' option available to them.

I mean I'll accept Level 3 for another two weeks if Brian Tamaki has to spend it in prison.

Good will works both ways, there's none from antivaxxers.  Time's up - screw them.

Most of the public obey lockdowns / restrictions.  Unfortunately we have to wait a few weeks before the $4k infringements (and up to $12k fines imposed by courts) kick in.

Endemic Covid is here.

My bet is level 3 for another week and there will be an announcement about another announcement in a week's time.

Lockdowns are not implemented to piss people off they are to save lives and NOT just those affected by Covid 19

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The problem is that you are (or there is the perception that you are) locking down people who do follow the rules for the benefit of those who don't care about lockdowns, won't get jabbed and do what they want.

I would be interested post-pandemic to find out whether people's enthusiasm for lockdowns decreased once they'd been vaccinated though, I think that there's potentially a 'Well I'm jabbed now so I'm not putting my life on hold for idiots' effect that we might not have expected to be as strong as it is.

Yep.  And at present community vaccination rate, if Auckland (and now Hamilton) alert level is reduced, then the health system will be overwhelmed and many people will die.

The 20-30 age group appears to be lagging for jabs, plus being more social, they are a good source for spread. Plus its just an "old people get sick" virus. I can see that playing out. Thats where employment law needs to kick in to mandate jabs for health and safety which IIRC is part of employment law. And no jab no entry is another which might be tricky legally and put retail/entertainment employers in the middle

Just got an alert, new cases in Raglan EDIT Just household contact vases

Entirely anecdotally that is absolutely the way people feel. I was chatting on WhatsApp to one of my closest friends, who also lives in a gulf country, and he basically said that verbatim. We were both fully vaccinated in April.

I’ve also had colleagues in Europe say the same thing.

'Roadmap' is being mentioned a lot. I think todays announcement will reach further out than just this week. I think they will allow time for the masses to get their second jab (over the next few weeks) and signal easing of restrictions which can happen at that time.

Those cases in Waikato just further evidence that it's the tip of an iceberg.  Endemic covid is here, and coming to a place near you - sooner rather than later.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300421908/covid19-reported-delta-cases-likely-the-tip-of-the-iceberg-experts-say

In the past three weeks there had frequently been cases turning up randomly - at hospitals, in police cells, the surveillance testing of a truck driver who had driven to Palmerston North, and the latest Waikato cases.

On Sunday night, the Ministry of Health announced a parent of a newborn in intensive care at Auckland Hospital was found to have the virus through surveillance testing.

Epidemiologist Michael Baker said the cases suggested a "iceberg phenomenon".

Part of that is due to them not getting access to vaccines til later and there being far fewer places when they first opened up for Group 4 than there are now.

Then the six week gap which blew out to 12 in the early days of booking both jabs for Group 4.

Now we have drive-ins and walk-ups that weren't there before, but given a six week gap for max protection, I can't get my second til late October.

One of the downsides of starting Group 4 so late.
