I agree as I stated earlier. In fact the backpacking version probably sees NZ as a safe haven, so lets flock here. Where else can you see soem great things with no community transmission? They have to stop that today, and as some other countries have, we need to get on that bandwagon, as should every other country

That's a bit harsh.
I still have a backpacker's hostel in NZ and have just talked to the managers.

90% of them are taking this very seriously.
Two young girls who've recently arrived were happy to shell out extra $ for private rooms - instead of dorms, and extend their stay.
Also distanced themselves from other travellers, ate separately etc. No one would've known but they volunteered.

We also get van travellers who pay for 1 night just to use the showers etc. Again very clear about how long they've been in the country, maintaining social distancing - polite, and ask what the rules are - esp the Germans.

Many of these kids have had this planned for a long time. We haven't had any rush of bookings - in fact have had a lot of cancellations.
Most are worried about how long it will last, and what effect it will have on their travels as NZ's just part of their round-the world trip.

Fair enough. That 10% is a worry. I guess the point that many are upset about is the casualness and boasting of just ignoring the self isolation. A few ruin it for the many. The many being us and the responsible tourists. This virus isnt an inconvenience, its serious, and either we will avoid mass community transmission, or we will have to shut down our economy in full as many are now forced to do. Its quite a fine line.

But I do take your point on board

We have to be very careful with this. We do not want this to go down the xenophobia rabbit hole that can easily become  pervasive. We do not and should not change our culture for this. The current border controls coupled with far less inbound traffic should be able to deal with it and any individuals that don't obey our rules can the dealt with accordingly.

It is not xenophobia, it's about Covid-19

If we retain the current border controls, we will rightly be called out for xenophobia.

Why do we not trust people who have been in china (or iran) to self quarantine, But not those from other places in the world that have become objectively more risky.

While china's reporting of the situation had room for improvement, they did take strong measures to contain the spread. Compare that approach to that of say the UK.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

We won’t be accused of xenophobia.

That’s a ludicrous suggestion that only the most woke of snowflakes would suggest as the reason the border is closed.

We have to manage this very carefully. This can easily become an excuse for those inclined to legitimise xenophobia because they will believe that the government supports their xenophobia. People will look for someone to blame and someone to hang the scapegoat label on.

IMO Its been that most countries under reacted. Don't want to upset the economy,  take the careful route just in case the virus wasnt as bad, thereby avoid affecting the economy unneccesarily. Then it became a rush to shut the door. In hindsight, if we all blocked the borders a lot earlier that would have helped. But the EU couldn't do that just like that.

From here, locking the borders tight, means that we can not bother with the airports as a leak and fully focus on the people that are here, and that also includes non residents and tourists. We arent throwing foreigners out, we are locking the gates so ALL of us are easier to manage.

Border is only closed to those that have been in china or Iran in the last 14 days (plus diamond princess).

It is open to everybody else. (Subject to self isolation requirement).
