I'm thinking presta valve tubes are the incarnation of evil! Can't use the petrol station air pumps, have to use a special pump, benefits for general cycling are pretty much 0.

You can get a small screw-in adapter which allows you to use a standard petrol station pump (Schrader). Left one in this product image:

most of the time a petrol station pump would be useless for those type of tube/tires anyways, as they only go up to 50-60psi and those tube/tires need 80+ psi. running them low increases the risk of getting the tube pinched and getting a puncture.

As an essential worker who has never taken lunch to work; I still head to the supermarket each day in Dunedin to see if I can get something for lunch - most of this week was a no go zone because of long lines, thankfully the Night N Day next to work is expanding what it can sell each day ...

Did a supermarket shop on Thursday because I needed lunch and dinner for Friday; line at Mosgiel New World just after 5pm was about the same as it had been on the previous Saturday shops. Got what I needed, line up for the checkout was a bit longer than normal but otherwise it just worked. Went back at 7.30pm to get cheese and just walked in...

NW Wigram getting unfortunately more popular!

Queue on opening went along the front, then back in the carpark (Parallel) and almost out to the street on the other side!

(Largest I have seen!)

It was just slightly shorter when I left.

Main shortages were High Grade Flour (A few normal flour on the shelf)

No breadmaking (Edmonds) yeast, but a generic Pams one on the shelf.

Chocolate and biscuits looked like they had been hammered!

No fresh bread, only stuff about 2-3 days old already.

(Even the bakery made hot cross buns were already 2 days old, but there were plenty)

Fruit and vege, meat etc well stocked.

About 50% of customers wearing masks. (All staff appeared to be wearing appropriate PPE)

Glad to be home again.

Yeah. I got there at 11-55am as Google Maps showed not too busy. Took an hour including the wait. I did a decent shop, otherwise would have gone home. Shoot, forgot Hot Cross Buns

Wow, now I have just discovered that a worker at a small supermarket I received a delivery from tested positive and was working at the supermarket right around the time my delivery was made! That doesn't prove anything of course, but it sure doesn't fill me with confidence! I feel like this damned virus is stalking me. Every time I read something I discover the virus can survive for one or more days on different surfaces (what about the food?), hang in the air someone else has breathed on, maybe re-infect someone already infected, etc. etc. Jeez! Maybe I should just go out and get infected and get it over with!

I went to New World Thorndon again this morning. I arrived just after 8am and the queue was long but no longer than last week and it was moving reasonably quickly. I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't able to get one of their handmade pizzas, but was able to get a nice fresh quiche instead. Otherwise they had everything that I needed except, of course, hand sanitiser.

There were a lot of people inside and maintaining separation was very difficult, but I understand they have to compromise between density of people inside vs the length of the queue outside.

its bad enough the day before, or the day after prior to lockdown but yea potentially 2 days closed people are not good at preparing themselves and shopping in advance

Yes, I know how you feel, perhaps Boris Johnson has done the right thing (well on second thoughts I don't think I'd like to go through what he's been through).

I've seen numerous reports about people "quarantining" their groceries for a couple of days (except for stuff that needs to go in the fridge straight away) before touching it. The same applies to mail received, that "could" be contaminated as well.

I think fresh fruit could be lightly washed in warm water, but not sure whether that would do any good. Cans and things can be washed in hot soapy water and cardboard packets etc can be wiped down with "wipes", although I couldn't buy any of these last time I tried.

All that seems a bit over the top, but might make you feel better in the case you mentioned of a worker at the supermarket you bought from testing positive. But, the chances of catching the virus off groceries and mail must be extremely small I guess.

I think the supermarkets should go back to normal hours. NW Wigram was I think, 7-30 to 10-00pm. Now its 8-30 to 8-30. That will reduce congestion, with no apparent effect on risk.

We shop normally, second shop was today. First time round the wife insisted we wash everything, so we did. I suffered in silence! Soap and water, or spray a cleaner on floppy stuff. There is merit in that, but as you say the risk is small. Hard things, it can stay alive for a few days, its protected by a sac. Cardboard is shorter as the cardboard/cloth will act like a sponge and absord the sac moisture , virus then dies. Freezing actually keeps the virus viable for I think 1 to 2 years. There is merit in washing groceries, but if the medico's say its low risk, I go with that. If you are vulnerable, its not too much of a drama to wash. A possible benefit and a large mental benefit.

My son has been going to the local park (3.4kms away according to GMaps) daily to keep up his football training and kick a ball around.

The park is huge, two full size football pitches with half a dozen 1/2 size pitches around them. There are a couple of tennis courts, an outdoor gym area plus a forest walk. Trust me it's big.

Dozens of people are walking and running around it, all keeping their distance and police are there regularly.

But today he was told to go home. We live too far away from the park to be able to use it according to the officer who turned up today. Apaprantly, new and stricter rules have come into place in the last couple of days.

Meanwhile a fair number of the bach's around us have people in them this weekend and a Lambo drove past this afternoon. A Lamborghini, in Otaki Beach, and there are as many MAMIL's cycling around today as there are in the height of summer.
