Just because she's high profile it doesn't mean they need to give her stupid opinion on vaccines any oxygen.

Not giving it attention is how flogs like this get to remain in well-paid leadership positions they're clearly incapable of.

Right now is not the time to be giving stupid people like her any publicity. It just helps give legitimacy to the anti vax movement.

If that's the best the anti-vax movement can muster as a figurehead then it probably says plenty about their credibility.

Realistically COVID is going to be around for a long time, these idiots have to be dealt with, and I bet she sings a different tune when Covid shows up in the Coromandel over Xmas/New Year.

Look, seriously what in the hell is happening here!!? How are these people leaving Auckland on a plane without a covid test?

AFAIK the media hasn't followed up with an explanation of how that person got on a plane 2 months ago in level 4. Or did they?

again , name calling . Are we 14 ?

How about trying to address any fears or reasons instead of giving them a label and making things worse.

Us : you lot are idiots . You are stupid or lazy. The majority is correct.
Yep, that attitude will really work .

As for media coverage of antivaxers . So we dont support unbiased coverage of both sides of the argument ?
If their arguments are irrational , or that person is irrational and out of control, that will show in the media/news coverage .
The hardliners on both sides of this wont be swayed by Media coverage .

You missed my point. It's not only about figure heads.

There should be nothing in the news like this that the anti vaxxers can align with. Credibility has everything to do with it. What you and I think is credible or not credible means absolutely nothing to most anti vaxxers. Their logic and ours doesn't align. To them some like her is very credible.

Also the publicity of the opinions like this just leads to increasing the division between both sides. People get up in arms publicly (news media and social media) about this, a slanging match ensues which further entrenches views and helps no one.

If she was ignored the whole issue would die away.  When it's time for local body elections then that's the time to give it a good airing but right right now when we need to get the maximum number of people vaccinated having these stupid views front and centre in the news is counter productive to what needs to happen.

Seeing this, I'm now starting to think a L4 circuit breaker for the purposes of getting ahead of vaxxs is a good idea.

I'd just be blunt, say we can't handle the load on the health system as things stand with this vax rate, but if we get two weeks and our jab rate over 90% in those demographics, then we can skip down to L2 at the end of it.

Carrot, stick, whatever. But I'm starting to wonder why this is being ruled out if we can hang a L2 'Freedom Day' off the end of it if we meet a key target over the course of three weeks or so.

One of the modelling guys (sorry, don't remember his name, not relevant anyway) was being interviewed on Morning Report today.
He was asked if he supported, like other modellers and epidemiologists have been suggesting, a short sharp L4 lockdown for Auckland.

His answer was that

Covid 19 is now being spread around Auckland largely by those who aren't following the L3 rules, and there is no reason to suppose that they would take any more notice of L4 rules.

Press release:

Some of the country’s largest businesses have put in an order for 300,000 approved rapid antigen tests for their workforce, after working at pace with the Government on a new scheme unveiled by Associate Minister of Health and Research, Science and Innovation Ayesha Verrall.

A coalition of around 25 businesses across a range of sectors has been granted an exemption by the Director-General of Health, to import and use approved rapid antigen tests.

The development comes just a week after Ayesha Verrall announced the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment is collaborating with the business community and Ministry of Health, to support and accelerate additional levels of testing for New Zealand workers.

“As we enter a new phase of our COVID-19 response, with more and more New Zealanders gaining protection through vaccinations, we can expand the tools we use to find and stamp out the virus,” Ayesha Verrall said.

“Some of the businesses in this group are already using rapid antigen tests successfully overseas, and their international experience has helped develop this New Zealand scheme. We will continue to refine, learn and iron out any issues in this first phase, before we look at how this testing can be rolled out as part of our wider COVID-19 response.

“To begin with, businesses will use nasal swabs. Rapid antigen testing can provide a result within around 15 minutes. But they tend to be less sensitive at detecting cases, so PCR tests will remain the mainstay of COVID-19 testing in most situations.”

Rapid antigen testing will sit alongside other COVID-19 testing used in New Zealand, and vaccinations, to boost New Zealand’s public health response.

“Businesses are focused on protecting the health and safety of their teams, as well as ensuring their critical work sites can continue to operate when there are cases of the virus in the community. Rapid testing is a vital added layer of protection to help identify chains of transmission and ensure workplace continuity,” Auckland Airport Chief Executive Adrian Littlewood said.

“We thank the Government, MBIE and the Ministry of Health for their quick response to our request to import rapid antigen tests, and we look forward to working with them as our essential workforces start using the tests in the days ahead.”

The coalition of businesses covers industries including manufacturing, energy, food production, telecommunications, freight, aviation and aged care. They have signed up to a charter with MBIE and the Ministry of Health, committing to work together and share insights to inform any wider roll-out of rapid antigen testing to other work sites.

“This is about supporting businesses to increase levels of testing amongst their workers, harnessing innovation, and supporting the COVID-19 economic recovery. Our priority is to safeguard the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders. We are committed to engaging and working constructively with businesses and communities, as we continue to swiftly identify and respond to cases of COVID-19,” Ayesha Verrall said.

IMO, I don't really think there's an "argument" with the science around this. I'm not a scientist or doctor but I would listen to both of those people over Steve on Youtube who has 55 followers who hang on his every word and say that the vaccine is bad and coronavirus is a hoax. Seriously, that's how ridiculous some of these "both sides" people are...also gives me unfortunate flashbacks to Charlottesville in 2017.

Problem is, people like her (in authority) capture people's attention and make them think twice about getting the vaccination. Look at all the people who listened to Trump and tried injecting themselves with bleach when he suggested it as a "potential cure" for coronavirus. Ditto, hydroxychloroquine - neither of which do anything for coronavirus.

I don't think he started the horse deworming thing though.

I suppose that's fair, but the flipside is the only other people they could give it to are other idiots who don't follow the rules or get jabbed, as opposed to....well... everyone. It might buy us some time.

You could also argue that's true of any lockdown level, so why bother being at L3?

Also, can't speak to the credibility of the rumour, but Twitter suggests a positive wastewater result in Te Awamutu.

@1101:

As soon as you cover something that is proven wrong then you are giving it a platform. Do not give anti-vaxxers a platform.

@1101:

Both sides? Or the side that won't accept peer-reviewed scientific evidence and instead relies on hearsay and the snake oil sold by scammers?

If you accept the "both sides" argument then you are providing a platform to the side that is wrong.

It's not a matter of "opinion" where both sides can argue. It's the case of "proven" or "snake oil belief".

IDK I'd consider a mayor openly being a moron to be newsworthy; that's the media's job. You get into grey areas once you start intentionally not covering things 'for the greater good'.
