IDK I'd consider a mayor openly being a moron to be newsworthy; that's the media's job. You get into grey areas once you start intentionally not covering things 'for the greater good'.

Then you should write "According to scientific evidence, claims made by [this person] are incorrect and in fact harmful."

Just saying "This person has an opinion that is different from the current science available" will just make that person an idol and might even convert people that are on the fence.

I'm not sure how some of the fake news outlets dealt with it, but RNZ's reporting was pretty clear that this person's views are not mainstream.

Have they used the term "mainstream" or "wrong"?

When Rocket Lab launch their rockets, we don't publish the opinion of flat earthers to "give balance", however if they are going to interview her, I would like someone to ask her if she has been struck by lightning at any point in her life.

This was posted yesterday on Reddit.  Seems plausible - it's the kind of behaviour I expect from deluded zealots:

I work at a medical centre who provide covid vaccination and today we have been flooded with fake bookings via the bookmyvaccine website with people using vulgar, offensive and racist words as the booking name.

Man, the antivax crew are the lowest of the low with this sort of behaviour.

They are taking resources away from our busy medical staff who are already run off their feet with swabbing and helping sick people to have to look at, deal with and delete all these crude bookings.

Our staff are really distressed.

53 unlinked cases alone in the last two days.

Wow. We're really just going to let this rip, huh.

PolicyGuy:

One of the modelling guys (sorry, don't remember his name, not relevant anyway) was being interviewed on Morning Report today.
He was asked if he supported, like other modellers and epidemiologists have been suggesting, a short sharp L4 lockdown for Auckland.

His answer was that

Covid 19 is now being spread around Auckland largely by those who aren't following the L3 rules, and there is no reason to suppose that they would take any more notice of L4 rules.

Kind of agree, although, Auck was infinitely quieter on the roads during lvl4. As Ive said many times, my opinion is Auck was not ready to drop to lvl3 and most certainly not lvl 3 (2.5) with concessions. It felt very much like the decision was political rather than local insight based or health based and of course it was a financial one. But keeping many Aucklanders still away from work, businesses closed, while just making the problem worse really just seemed silly given we had dramatically reduced the case numbers, down to single digits, and felt like we only had a couple of weeks of lvl4 left, when many were blindsided by the lvl3 announcement.

The time for lvl4 was when we had the virus largely isolated to one main region, we needed door to door advice, testing and or vaccinating of these hotspots. Also we needed to financially support Aucklanders far more in lvl4. The cost of dropping to a modified lvl3 (or a stronger lvl 2 depending on how you want to look at it) from a point when we were possibly a couple weeks away from elimination, will imo prove to be a lot more than keeping Auck at lvl4, for as long as it took.

We should also have had additional traffic Police seconded from elsewhere (of course that has its own risks) to do suburb random checks of road use in lvl4 and have a system in place where food and medicinal needs could have a time slot allocated and could be shown to said Police should cars be pulled over. On top of that very very heavy fines (the only way to stop flouters is where it hurts most) needed to be in place, instead of just warnings.

They need to be held responsible for any aftermath of the hasty decision, good or bad. Which of course is a problem given National imploded once Key resigned. But at this point I do not think it could have been handled any worse.

Onto other vax news discussed already.
'I do my own research': Coromandel Mayor still won't get Pfizer jab despite backlash (msn.com)

"You always base your choices on the knowledge you have - I do my own research if you like and I'm sure other people do too, and so from there you make choices."

She is right, that it is and should be a personal choice. I do not think that is the real issue, some journalism on how peoples decisions based on incorrect science would be more newsworthy. Versus what we did prior to the internet.

Ive said this before too, imo, one of the biggest reasons this pandemic has not been handled well in western democracies is due to the information age (search engines specifically), people have been told for ages "xyz search engine is your friend", in this case, it hasnt been, given how many disinformation sites were/are about, the likelihood of finding scientifically based data was minimal at best, for the average 'Joe'. IMO the internet has required reform for a long time, but this pandemic has highlighted the reasons front and centre.

Yet oddly, Govts with a lot of scientists on their payroll (a quick search reveals how a lot of scientists during this pandemic have felt, but Dr Kim on YT has said this is his one biggest concern, not the pandemic itself), have appeared to be ignoring science along with sticking heads in sand, NZ is no different, with leaving everything until it was too late, because we did not have Delta in NZ (yet we left the door wide open for it, yet nobody thought it advisable to make sure the door was closed as soon as we became aware of the situation in Ind, let alone NSW).

Im all for freedom and democracy, but not at the risk of public safety and civilization itself.

IMO the civil rights act needs amendment to be changed for times of civil emergency including pandemics. It also should be made clear that such decisions cannot be made by the head of the country alone.

Yep - it's too late unless there could be close to 100% compliance with a L4 circuit breaker, which isn't going to happen.

"Gatherings inside people's homes" identified as main factor behind growth in cases.

I thought that was already a given the day they moved to lvl3.
To me it felt like the Govt thought, lvl 3, she'll be right cobber, those jafas are a compliant bunch, we wont help those in need financially, target covid hot spots, fine and potentially imprison flouters, nah, we don't need to actually live there to know whats actually going on etc. Its NZ, what could possibly go wrong.

Oh dare, a waste of tax payers resource (the NZ public health system is already under funded imo, a false economy) and worse yet a major threat to this countries health and well being.

Again, the threat of severe financial loss or imprsonment was required for such nonsense. Just tolerating and doing nothing (almost like they didnt see it coming, or did and didn't worry anyway), is the biggest mistake that has been made, in many aspects of this pandemic handling in NZ.
