afe66: Two messages in last week advising my hospital is 100% occupancy and to expedite discharges and covid hasn't hit yet

Mine was delayed by 3 months after waiting 6 months, I was just happy to get in, get surgery done and get out of there. As you say, before covid hits.

As for political, the health, wealth and mental state of Auckland is simply one big political stunt. And I think its back firing on them and showing up the lack of quality politicians in Labour. Enough said there. But I will say, they should be letting the experts make the decisions, is Chris Hipkins a virologist? Yes hes the minister for covid, but that doesnt mean he should be the decision maker, he should simply be the announcer of decisions, but that does not seem to be what is occuring, with many of his staff left blind sided by moving to lvl 3.

I wouldn't use the word backfiring, but there is a clear problem at present where some "experts" who have been prominent in the media and who are not politically neutral are now expressing very different views of the path we should be taking which is very different to the one the government are currently taking. There are people out there who are now confused as to why this is happening, and this is potentially going to be very problematic for the government in the next week or so.

Many of the decisions we have made this year that have been criticised for so long are now coming back to haunt us - with a classic example being rapid tests. In recent days the government seems to be tripping over itself making decisions such as allowing them when they've been telling us for so long that they are a waste of time, and this too is simply causing confusion in people who now don't know what to believe.

Professor Skegg warned us in August the golden weather was over and that 2022 was going to be very tough - his simply got his time frame a little wrong and that difficult period is going to be from now.

Mental health of many people particularly in Auckland is now incredibly fragile and you can see that on social media with the outrage and irrational comments being made by people people who thought we'd smashed Covid and won are on a witch hunt to find somebody to blame for this.

The first point is undeniable but the second point does not compute.

As someone with a baby, isolated from family that are outside of Auckland and working as a permitted worker. I have yet to find someone who genuinely thought we smashed COVID and there weren't significant potential risks. Sure people lost touch with what was happening overseas but a lot of that is down to just how inept a large proportion of our media seem to be.

That's the bit I have problems understanding. If we weren't beating it, then why weren't we enforcing harder lockdowns or getting our claws into the underworld? Did it matter or did it not?

I can only gauge that, being in a similar boat as you with an infant and being disconnected from family outside of Auckland, that many in Auckland simply didn't care once they were jabbed. There were certainly plenty of non-compliant people on beaches throughout lockdown, and masking out in public was hit and miss.

Sadly there's a great deal of selfishness and it has many root causes but once you start recognising it in one area it's hard to not see it everywhere.

We lived in the hoity-toighty eastern beaches during the first lockdown and it aggravated us no end how few people paid attention to the rules. The 'I'm alright jack' attitude prevailed then and it wasn't ever really going to change much. We're not too fond of draconian measures in NZ so I can see how the government may have not wanted to push things too much given it could have the opposite effect.

I'm not saying things couldn't have been done better, I don't have all the information but I do agree that a lot of people just don't care enough and that feeling existed it seems before jabbing even started.

The more my brain starts turning to mush I can kind of understand it but the bloody minded socialist inside of me wants to keep fighting for fear of our child suffering horrible consequences.

This just shows that alternative reality is deep seated and deeply engrained in some parts of society, who have a deep mistrust of science, the government, modernization. These people don't drink pasteurised milk, they want raw milk. They don't want vaccine, they want to get the real illness. I bet some even believe the planet is flat. It didn't happen overnight, but the way i see it Trump has enabled, empowered, and given these people a platform such that we suddenly see an explosion of these activities in the last 24 months.

I think you're crediting too much power to one person. It's more complicated than pinning the blame on one person. To put it another way - did Trump create the times or did the times create Trump?

both i think. the chicken and egg both existed.

but he was a powerful person. Obama said he is not allowed a smartphone by the secret service. no president has ever had one.

first thing trump does ... tweet 24/7 from his smart phone. he held more power than anyone could ever imagine. he destroyed huawei (world's 3rd/2nd biggest mobile company) with one signature and china could do nothing, didn't even retaliate. if he said launch nuclear weapons, the generals will have no choice but to launch. the only thing holding him back was the sharemarket.

One of our staff members is in the anti-vax camp, when talking to him yesterday, he said there were 80 vaccination related deaths, that Denmark had abandoned vaccinations (hence our buying their Pfizer vaccines) and a few other anti-vax things.

I did a quick google today and according to medsafe, there has only been 1 confirmed vaccine related death but up to 60 at a similar time to the vaccine, given anti-vaxxers hesitancy to believe both the Govt and mainstream media, are there other reputable resources that could debunk the 80 death claims?

Google also showed that it was the moderna(?) vaccine that had been stalled, to under 18 year olds. I think this was AlJazerra news, again are there other reputable resources to debunk the claims?

I am certain we aren't being given 100% of the "open and transparent" truth by both our Govt and our mainstream media, and that the coordinated message to get everyone vaxxed merely plays into the hands of the anti-vaxxers, but what are the alternatives? They'll simply push back with "they've been bought" or similar dismissals of evidence?

I understand that there is no hammer big enough to pound the stupid out of some people, but it would be good to at least have independent facts to support the pro-vax cause?
