loceff13: 2 probable cases in Dunedin with the mans child and another family member showing signs. Results expected today. Dunedin supermarkets got busy after news spread, fresh bread, pasta, flour etc all sold.

A sign of things to come with panic buying sadly, hopefully they start putting limits on or dedicated early hours for the elderly like AUS.

Supermarkets should have sat up like Scooby Doo and said "ruh roh" in the first wave of panic buying a few weeks back. It's nothing short of organisational incompetence to not have had limits in place after that.

tdgeek: I'd like Mr Plod to meet tourists, explain it in plain black and white as we can certainly welcome 3 to 6 month tourists.

Yet another example of wanting to foist a non-criminal matter into the hands of an already overstretched organisation. Yes police can assist, if need be, when self-centred self-entitled a-holes decide not quarantine themselves but overall it's a health matter not a police one.

sqishy:

So how come for this its 48 hours only?

Every one in that school should self isolate and their immediate family?

It does say at least 48 hours. I would expect contact tracing to be occurring at the school. It wouldn't make sense to clean the school but not trace who was in contact with the case.

In Australia police are apparently door knocking and issuing $20,000 fines for anyone not self isolating. Why aren't we doing that in NZ? The apparently they have door knocked 1800 people already. It could be a good start at recouping all the billions this is going to cost all of us. I wonder how we are going to pay for this? Amazing that it all started in that horrid market that someone posted the video of above. There doesn't seem to be any talk about what is being done to prevent those things, apparently they are common in some other countries too. It is just going to happen again, because we have already been warned by experts that this would happen eventually, and have already had SARS, MERS etc .  It feels to me like mother nature getting back at humans for doing that to these beautiful animals.

MikeB4:

This is a very summary of where we are today and why.

Interesting comparing the travel restrictions as firebreaks and not wanting to lift the firebreak too early. It was only  last week when one NZ tourism spokesperson was complaining and calling for us to lift the China ban, because it was hurting tourism too much. I hope they don't lift them too early.

Future outbreaks can happen anywhere. Massive deforestation means we’re living closer and closer to wild animals. Don’t think once this will be a one in life time occurrence.

This could be the breaking point to show that we can't continue like this as a human race.

We have the whole global warming etc problems. It is highly likely the worlds pollution this year will be historically low due to decreased productivity due to this. Potentially it could be the end of globalization, and reverting back to smaller human populations, and populations being more insulated from one another. . China has been wanting to keep their population a certain size or decrease it,  with their one child policy. Using technology more to decrease travel and the pollution that causes

The potential effects of this could be similar to a world war, including a significant number of people  dying, major economic effects, and potentially even another baby boomer generation created.

I hope mainstream TV will be running documentaries on why this has all happened so people can be educated.

- RKI endangerment classification is now "high"

- Concerns of even well equipped ICUs about the ramp up

I can somehow understand that this is their culture as we eat pigs and cows, but if they already do. don't they have a municipal inspection that checks for cleanliness? This is totally inhumane and I can't understand those people coming in and taking that meat outside the fridge in such conditions. Horror!
