Great new data out of Israel showing the effectiveness of a 3rd dose / booster. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02249-2/fulltext

It's a shame the MoH have even come out today and said they're still reviewing the data and that we'll know within "a few months" what they're planning on doing. We should have started our booster program already.

I was staggered to see that tweet. When did Group 4 start getting their firsts? Are we heading into a perfect storm of waning vulnerable immunity, a re-opening city with pent-up backlogs of socialising heading into Xmas? Because yikes.

Are the tests this inaccurate?

Another case of Covid-19 has been identified in the Christchurch community, but the Ministry has not indicated a link to the four cases discovered earlier this week. The source is under investigation.

The case is a fully-vaccinated person who recently travelled from overseas, stayed in an Auckland managed isolation and quarantine facility, and then travelled to Christchurch after being released, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The person returned multiple negative tests while in MIQ, including one on day 12 of their stay. The person got another test on Thursday, which returned a positive result on Friday night.

Far more likely to have been infected late in their stay and not have enough load to be positive at the day 12 test, or possibly infected on day 12/13/14 post-test?

Assuming they have done a second confirmation test to make sure the positive result is a real positive.

I suspect it is just an attempt to link this case to something other than an outbreak in Christchurch. Same with the comments about the Tongan case being a potential false positive.

There is a definite desire not to lock down anther city but I have to question how the decisions are being made on that side now. Auckland and Waikato are locked down but Northland and Christchurch isn't despite what appears to be community spread and a low vaccination rate in Northland.

@tdgeek in reply to your response to my post this morning.
There is no answers here, this is a tech forum not a medical group. The short answer is I listen to medical professionals.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Depending also on what your vaccination was, where and when, your age, and not everyone builds a good immune response.

J&J and Sinovac not being so great it seems, though J&J boost seems to do the trick.
Of course there are places that getting that vaccination certificate to fly is , getting that vaccination certificate to fly.

Then there is travelling from Auckland an outbreak area where you could get it on way to airport, at terminal etc.

Rare but not impossible. Like someone has to win lotto.
False positives happen but very rarely, however we do do a zillion tests.

ChCh apparently doesnt have community spread if the cases are close and known cases of the one that started it. Hard to imagine those people have been hermits, and the Tongan case doesnt appear to be a close and known contact of the one that brought it here. IMHO there is unknown community transmission here in ChCh. There is a protest here for good measure. L3 with Macca's is required.

Yeah they're hermits with how many places of interest even though they didn't use the covid tracker...... I agree it's unknown community transmission which really makes it even riskier.

Still makes Northland interesting as well though. I believe there might be another 2 Northland cases already lined up for announcement tomorrow. But still people are over level 3 announcements so lets just leave the current ones in place and not do that any more. /s

to be fair (no i haven't read or watched what they are protesting about), why are they keeping Auckland in lockdown when it is spreading elsewhere. you hope for the sake of Akl that if it really does spread widely everywhere they would no longer lockdown Akl.

either that or bring the vaccine to the Counties ... 9900 left to go https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-auckland-now-less-than-10000-jabs-from-90pc-milestone/QG3G62IMISMGSFSJJG6GOBGAHA/

MaxineN: Lots are protesting today. Idiots.

Most are simply idiots, but if your post from 1-2 days ago is true, the anti vaxxers had a big win this week.

MaxineN: So the in laws are close contacts of the chch case and the anti vaxx brother in law is a casual plus.

Rather stressed out about this honestly.

The unvaccinated woman from Christchurch that travelled to Auckland and back to Christchurch and spent several days with symptoms without scanning or getting tested, appears to have helped spread Delta to Tonga and possibly Wellington. Edit, not sure if they have linked the cases, but it would be a big co-incidence if they were completely unrelated.

From RNZ: Two of four household contacts of the person who tested positive after flying from Christchurch to Tonga then travelled to Wellington, the Ministry said.

No idea how much influence the anti vaxx contact was, but when you have people like that around you, it might just push you over the line from vaccine hesitant to anti-scanning and anti-vaxx.

MikeB4: She believes the "opening up and living with it" is not based on any sound science, it is driven by dollars.

So what is the alternative? Indefinite and increasingly ineffective lockdown?

The other big question floating around is "have we peaked"??

Looking at the daily case chart it appears we are at an inflection point.....

Either we have come off the latest retraction and are going to push higher in the next few days,

Or

Given that today's 125 is less than one week ago 129,... we might be topping out.. (mystery cases certainly have stopped rising) .. but I don't know if this is a good lead indicator )

https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/27-10-2021/the-spinoff-covid-tracker/

The next 2-3 days will tell if this are about to get a whole lot worse, or stabilise and gradually improve...

Bugger!, clearly forming.a base for another push higher...

Nah, just a long weekend so probably a drop in testing.
