Auckland has had 11 weeks which is hard but really in comparison it has not been that long.

I guess living in Auckland, I don't consider what other countries have had to deal with that relevant to our outbreak here.

Until you're talking orphans in war-torn Somalia then there's always going to be doing someone tougher than you.

MikeB4: My youngest lives in London, they endured what amounted to well over a year of close to our level 4 lockdown over which time we were close to open.

From speaking with friends and relatives over there, London's lockdowns were never comparable to our level 4. At worst they could be compered to our level 3, but for the most part it was more like our level 2.

An interesting population study shows lower oveall mortality for vaccinated in USA.

https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2021/10/27/people-with-covid-jabs-have-been-less-likely-to-die-of-other-causes

Original study.
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7043e2.htm

Mentioned here.  14min 30 seconds in
TWiV 823: COVID-19 clinical update #86 with Dr. Daniel Griffin

Ok when you look at certain rallies, and similar here,
maybe there is a self selection of less healthy, less caring for their health that don't get vaccinated ?

At very least vaccinated are not falling over and dropping dead as some may falsely say.
Moderna will love their result, but given Pfizers milder side effects,
Pfizer has probably been better for getting more hesitant vaccinated.

100% this. This is not an competition on who has the toughest lockdown.

The reality of the matter is that Auckland has been locked down for a reasonably long period of time. This lockdown is quite different from the initial lockdowns, back then we didn’t have a vaccine, didn’t know much about the virus and it was seeded within the community.

Instead we have a laid-back populace, matched with a similar ministerial/government (in terms of planning for delta and vaccination rollouts) and it’s coming back to haunt us. Even now, we have this laid back attitude through out Auckland and New Zealand.

The problem now is that I don’t see a way out of this which will not result in further deaths. Our consequences are now baked into the cake now.

Essentially we are living week by week, until very recently where we were basically told it would be at least another month - meanwhile, other bits of the country are able to do things like 'open their businesses' or such extravagances as 'being inside with their relatives'.

Whatever is going on with other countries doesn't make it any easier to deal with what is happening here, or mean we shouldn't expect better when we get wobbles in our response.

New Zealand is becoming a country of two parts, and each part has a distinctly different outlook on Covid.

This article highlights it very starkly. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/opinion/126825988/covid19-where-has-jacinda-ardern-the-great-communicator-gone

This quote particularly;

Instead of primarily being asked about the plan and talking about how Aucklanders are doing it tough, he, Judith Collins and Chris Bishop, were bombarded with questions about how National’s plan to reopen – which it would do once 85 per cent of the population were fully vaccinated - would stop cases of Covid from blowing up, or getting out around New Zealand.

Bayly, who had spent much of lockdown doing electorate work, helping desperate voters and businesses navigate alert level rules, gain travel exemptions and generally keep afloat during lockdown – as have all the other MPs in Auckland across all parties – told me afterwards that if you went around his electorate asking those sorts of questions, you’d probably get belted.

Also living in Auckland...

We should only have to consider our situation to the rest of New Zealand. I know many out side of Auckland really have no clue what is going on here (I have extended family in the Hawkes Bay and their attitude is very much "its an Auckland problem").

Yep. I’ve had friends and family out of Auckland (Hawkes Bay and Christchurch, in particular) with similar judgements. Some of them think that Aucklanders are being drama queens and that “we're taking being locked down too seriously” when it comes to talking about the matter. There were some lines of thinking that we brought it on ourselves with Brian T’s picnics.

Their attitudes changed quite quickly when there was a scare in Napier and confirmed Covid in Christchurch…

i dont live in Auckland and since there is nothing i can do about what is happening in Auckland i dont think about it much , if it spreads to my city then i will worry , at the moment i can live a life that is pretty much normal and i will continue to do so knowing that could change very quickly.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

With all due respect, "not thinking about something you can do nothing about" being expressed does not help Aucklanders like me.

What, after 11 weeks, really hurts is the arbitary deadline of 90% across all DHB's having to be reached to even get to "red zone" and out of L3 lockdown. I notice that Counties Manukau is slipping in vaccine rate and now is showing as not likely until December 4th. So we can see no sure relief in any forseeable timeframe, even after a soul crushing 16 weeks.

Just got back from a drive to pick up some stuff, there are a small number of protesters driving up and down dominion road and also standing near the Dominion road-balmoral road intersection.

Messaging seems to be:
- no mandate, no masks.
- “my body, my choice”
- lockdown / freedom of movement

No disruption of traffic but just wow. Get a vaccine so we can recover our freedoms and move towards a future without masks.

Twenty two jobs available. That’s hardly going to help many unvaccinated.

MikeB4: Oh and I have not seen 3 of my grandchildren my son, daughter, daughter in law, and 2 siblings for nearly two years.

Join the club.

My wife and I have seen no family members at all in person since March 2019!
