 frontal lobotomy works better

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. laughing

People are confusing the benefits of nicotine with the activity of smoking.

Nicotine is a useful chemical.  One of it's most efficacious uses is in controlled dose products for weaning people off smoking.

It's also an very effective insecticide.

It is easily synthesised and could be very easily turned into a therapeutic medicine without the use of any tobacco product at all.

Tobacco use is probably the worst possible delivery mechanism for nicotine.  It poses significant health risks to the patient and maybe people around them as well.

The risks nicotine addresses as a medicine would need to be quite serious because best available evidence shows it promotes growth and metastasis of existing tumours.

Finally, something good about smoking:

It has long been known that smoking relieves tension and improves concentration, but this goes much further.

Now for the deluge of anti-smoking commentary.

Smoking-related cancer killed my father, but until he died he was pretty chilled out....until he found out he was dying.

I am sorry about your father. Smoking has killed a lot of people. Many were victims of the time they grew up in, before the hazards of smoking were well-known and widely publicised. I would not encourage anyone to start smoking. I just think there ought to be a little more understanding for those who do. They are addicts, not criminals. First smoking is banned in one place, then another. Smokers are forced to congregate in the streets. Then they are pushed further down the street. Then outdoor smoking is banned. If the intention is to keep smokers away from non-smokers, then give smokers a place where they can go. Smoking will eventually die out. Those who oppose it just need to have a little more patience.

Smoking is a choice that affects more than the individual that is making the choice and that person is making that choice for others.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I've been patient for 40 odd years ... I don't think it will die out any time soon as I see plenty of under 40s smoking.

There is place for smokers to go - their home.

Smokers pollute and litter public places, while exposing bystanders to carcinogenic toxins.

Smoking negates my enjoyment of public places more often than any other other antisocial behaviour.  Sure the impact is low, but it's a more than daily occurrence.

As a thought experiment ...

Imagine going for a walk carrying a pot plant and stopping outside shop doors and outdoor dining areas to spray it with a carcinogenic insecticide with quite a lot of over-spray onto adjacent bystanders ... how would people react?

Oh - I missed this thread until now.

I'm an avid zealous anti-smoker.  I really do hate it.

I'd however say - with considerable personal experience of seeing people close to me suffer from schizophrenia, including the long-term effects of taking anti-psychotic medication so that they could (between psychotic episodes) enjoy a quality of life that we take for granted - then FFS let them smoke if they want to.  Outside - if that's the issue.

If quitting smoking is enforced as an immediate impact of being sectioned under the mental health act and incarcerated against your will in an institution, then IMO that's cruel and inhumane.

If quitting smoking is an expected condition to being admitted and treated (voluntarily admission) for any psychotic disorder in a hospital in NZ, then the lunatics are truly running the asylum.  You want these people to seek help - and you just put a barrier at the door.

If I'm standing outside (on the street or wherever) minding my own having a smoke and you rock up and nut off about it you'll probably end up with the red end in your eye for being a p***k

a) I don't hide the fact I'm having a smoke so no one forced you to come stand next to me

b) I don't suffer idiots nicely (there should be a DNA test for idiocy at birth and those that fail should be burnt or made to undergo a frontal lobotomy)

No not really, I just don't see why people who don't smoke or have given up think they have a right to tell me what to do

Sigh, there are a-holes on all sides.
* Don't smoke in doorways and by open windows.
* Don't go out of your way to be a bigot about smoking.

Sorted.

I quite like the smell of tobacco smoke.  Not stinking stale foul smoke as there used to be in poorly ventilated bars or that horrific experience of being in the smoking section of a fully loaded plane - where everybody lit up when the seatbelt/no smoking light was turned off.
Marijuana smoke smells nice too.

I guess that was part of the appeal of smoking in the first place, if it did smell as foul as some people are suggesting, then it probably wouldn't have become so popular.

So what you are really saying is you want to use public space in a way that excludes others who wish to avoid exposure to the carcinogenic toxins you are emitting and if anyone has the temerity to object, you will assault them?

And you think people who don't smoke are the idiots in this discussion?
