You can also use the Shortcuts app to create a home screen shortcut that takes you directy to the pass. ...

A separate app?

In my case (Android), it automatically came up with the option to add a shortcut to the home screen at the time I added the pass to GPay.  Not separate app required.

I've noticed each time I view my pass via Google Pay the screen brightness fades up to max then fades back to normal when closed.  Oddly the brightness slider on my phone's drawer doesn't move between states.

I'm picking this is to ensure it's bright enough for the verifier app to see it in low light situations.  A workaround for the verifier app users so they don't have to have a torch shortcut to scan dimly lit passes like was added to the Tracer app for QR posters?

It is brighter so it can be scanned by any application - not only the verifier app. I use Google Pay to store codes for Air NZ, FlyBuys, Countdown, New World and more.

Commerical 3D scanners (think checkout reader) need full contrast. No light. Stocard also makes them bright. As does google pay when you add loyalty cards

I'd expect reflectivity with a light on screen covers etc may be an issue. So easier to just boost the contrast for all

Shortcuts is part of iOS 13. By default the passes are not added to the home screen on iOS, they're in Apple Wallet which you can get to by double clicking the power button. But if you already have an Apple Pay card set up it defaults to that and you have to scroll down to your vax pass. Same on Apple Watch, I have shortcut on my watch face that opens the vax pass directly now.

I just tried bringing up my pass on the Apple Watch and it's really cool. When you tap on the pass itself, the QR code comes up full screen so it's about the same size as it would be on your iPhone.

Alas, I guess that will not be possible on my 'old' Gear S3 watch (Tizen).  Could be handy.

marmel: I have tried Chrome and Safari, opening from Gmail and Apple Mail, always get the same blank screen.

I got the same problem with my wife's iPhone and I'm not an iOS perso so I really didn't have any idea how to make it work because the  Google Pay experience on my Pixel  phone was seamless. In the end I just double clicked the power button and when I brought up Apple Pay the vaccine certificate was there so all good.

I would love it if someone did a Connect IQ app so I could have it on my Garmin watch!

I think you mean double click the HOME button, not the Power button. Plus the iPhone must be in the "Sleep/Locked" state, not a full power off state.

To set this 'Double Tap' up: Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Double-Click Home Button > On

No home button on her Iphone 13 Pro. I am sure I double pressed the power button.

Just checked. I got her phone and it was locked. I double pressed the Power button and it brought up her default CC for Apple Pay and the Covid cert was on the lower part of tbe screen. I was able to choose it and it displayed.

Thanks for that, just confirmed that it is there when I double click the power button. It isn’t viewable in Apple wallet though, which is where I thought it was stored?

Reading a LinkedIn post where someone with an interest in the process (Ian McCrae, CEO OrionHealth) complains about this having teething problems on launch day. The comments are a good list of "experts" that you shouldn't hire.

Two common themes: "It's an email, why didn't write an app for that?" and "Why not use the covid tracer app?" followed with "what a waste".

Using the existing Apple Wallet and Google Pay secure storage was the better choice. Writing an app would require the team to create all the security safeguards that are already provided by these wallets, increasing development time by weeks if not months.

Why not add it to the covid tracer app? Because the app uses the Apple/Google Exposure Notifications framework and the licence for that excludes the possibility of adding this type of functionality.

Obviously most of the commenters seemed to have no idea of why access to the mycovidrecord site was being affected on that day, so most comments were unhelpful "oh, this is a government project" without looking at it simply as a scaling issue.

Can someone explain to me how this works? I just downloaded my pass. I don't carry a phone so I printed it out. I don't see how the QR code part could possibly be scanned. It is far too compressed on the card-size printout and is basically just a blob. My printer has normal resolution but the print area is just too small. The code does appear okay if I zoom it. The card contains my name and birth date but what is there to prove this is not a fake?
