"A man charged over Auckland's anti-lockdown protest reportedly has Covid-19. Papatoetoe resident Paul Thompson, aged 57, last week denied failing to comply with the Covid-19 Public Health Response Order by attending the gathering, along with 5000 people, during alert level 3 restrictions. Thompson, a member of Destiny Church, has since tested positive for Covid, Stuff reports."

PM has announced the date the borders will open for Aucklanders will be known in advance - apparently we'll know that next week.

And that will be a hopeful guess. Maybe it will be fine, maybe it won't.

I'm willing to bet that we will see quarantine free travel next year. It will be happening pretty well everywhere else and as a result there will be huge pressure for it to happen here.

I agree. While you are biased :-), there has been PLENTY of time to get vaccinated. Now, it would be great if we can lockdown Level 4 in all of NZ but that's a Law of Diminishing Returns. The negative are other countries who went "freedom" too soon and are paying. Like we have always done, hold on, hold on. Its saved lives and not just those with Covid, ie, non Covid but needed operations.

Bit of bad timing with the protest/picnic charges then
She adds that picnics have not led to increases in cases and only one case has been reported from BBQs

But to backup last night convo. Dr Bloomfield confirmed going to supermarket is basically zero chance too.

So guess that backs up the bad people meeting in home most common theory.

Thats what I see. From day one , almost literally. Then the inevitable, and understandable result of decreasing compliance due to fatigue. One bad outcome compounded by the second.

Guessing there is almost zero chance currently, because cases are still relatively low and there is social distancing and mass wearing. Plus many people with covid are either in MIQ or being forced to isloate while they are sick, but will that continue to occur? But what about in the future when covid is endemic and there won't be the same restrictions in place in supermarkets. Will people always need to wear masks in supermarkets and be social distanced when in supermarkets under the traffic light system?. I know someone in the US who caught it when they went shopping, despite wearing a cloth mask and washing hands etc and they had a pretty bad case of it. .

There's a reason medical staff wear both mask and eyewear. Eyeballs are also a direct link inbound. Someone else likely wasn't as covered up.

Red and orange we still have them. Green it is recommended.

I am not sorry for thinking that "be kind" should only apply to those that get sick by chance - not to someone like this - I have no sympathy here (if true):

An unvaccinated man who intentionally caught Covid-19 and was hospitalised now says he regrets his actions. In a post to Facebook, an Aucklander said he had tested positive for Covid-19 and was left weak and bedridden. The man became very ill and it's understood he infected several family members. During the time of his infection he was taken to hospital and was recently discharged.

I saw that. What was he doing out without his responsible adult?

GV27:

Geektastic: Imagine the press if she opens the border and all of a sudden Delta is rampant everywhere? Rightly or wrongly, the public view would be "If you hadn't let them out we'd still be fine!"

What's the possible end-game there? It's going to get out either way.

Or is the assumption Aucklanders should just be prevented from moving around forever?

1:
Perhaps open the international border and keep the national border closed.

There has been no rational reason given to why they are keeping people who have tested negative 3 times in quaranteen for 14 days yet allowing sick people who have tested positive to self isolate. Surely the positive cases are more likely to spread the disease. Makes a lot of sense to immediately allow self isolation after a negative day 3 test. This will free up a lot of rooms allowing either more people through the border, or more positive cases to isolate in MIQ.

Thus, Aucklanders can get some freedom & go on international holidays while allowing other parts of the country to continue with the elimination strategy.

2:
Remove most of the restrictions within the city. Currently the restrictions are based on vaccination levels. Change this to base restrictions on hospitalisation levels. Increase or decrease restrictions so as to not overwhelm ICU. At the rate we are going at the moment, by the time vaccination rates increase & restrictions are removed, then it is going to be too late, and ICU will be full. Perhaps it best for Aucklanders to get some freedom now before ICU gets overwhelmed.

190 Cases, deaths reported, Northland's first hospitalisation.

Also, only 900 1st doses in Auckland (whole region) yesterday.

FWIW, the first time since June that the reported daily number of local cases in NZ has exceeded the number in NSW (187).

my understanding is it's not the eyeball but the lacrimal duct.

also i thought the expert said on herald we are all going to get the live virus soon, as a form of live vaccination/?booster when we open up (can't find link). i won't worry too much.

Vaccination exemption process and criteria are online:

https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-response-planning/covid-19-mandatory-vaccinations/covid-19-exemptions-and-exceptions-mandatory-vaccination

Categories here:

https://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/pages/vaccine_temporary_medical_exemption_v1.0_final.pdf

As examples:

  • 1A - currently sick with covid-19
  • 3A - People confirmed as being non placebo participants of a vaccine trial in NZ (i.e. Valneva COVID-19 vaccine trial NCT04956224)

General principal seems to be that the exemptions will have an expiry. - For examples person with a known severe
allergy to the excipients of the pfizer vaccine as per the datasheet, would be given a period of months of exemption to wait for an alternate vaccine to become available.

All up, the criteria is very narrow.
