MikeB4:Handle9:
If it could be avoided so easily why hasn't it been anywhere in the world?
The same lobbying and selfish attitudes are not isolated to Aotearoa
Handle9:
More likely that it really isn’t that easily avoided.
I have read many statements and documents from true experts that the best avoidance methods don't include what we are embarking on which is simply repeating the mistakes of others.
I think we will never agree on if we could have stamped it out and whether the govt was willing to get the army in to round up all the gangs.
If you recall everybody was compliant for a long time, but the govt let the gangs do what they want, the entire time, the underworld spread it, Tamaki protested, no action, and then the people saw that there was no point following instructions and here we are.
Could we? Well at the start yes. From the point of no action vs gangs and no action vs protests - a resounding no.
If you mean could we keep this ring fenced in AKL and shut them down while opening up the rest of the country? Well do you want to be voted back in by AKL in the next election or not?

I agree, but the public want out. The public seem to want a freedom policy not a health/economy policy.
Only the Auckland public.
There have been many protests outside of AKL

Interesting theory
We have circa 5million in Aotearoa, the protests have been in hundreds or a couple of thousand. It is a huge stretch to conclude the public want out.
Handle9:
Where have those true experts had success. It’s very easy to be an “expert” when you never have to implement anything.
Saying it’s easy or simple to stamp out Covid is farcical. It’s clearly not the case, anyone who has lived through an extended lockdown understands that.
Don't add words to what I wrote. I did NOT say it was simple to stamp out Covid.

In my experience I seem to know many that are anti vaxxers. Not violent, but nice people. I read that here too with others experiences. I get the feeling that there are a lot of people with that sentiment. While I take the Tamaki's of this world as a small but squeaky wheel, I just get the feeling the anti vax anti lockdown sentiment is quite wide. Purely annecdotal though
The problem is Tamaki's garbage can have a much bigger impact with a virulent strain. Likewise the gangs.
The light touch has never worked with these people, why did we suddenly think they would fall into line all of a sudden?
If your entire response can be undone by predictable dickheads being dickheads then was it really that good in the first place?

The press, social media and online forums distort the metrics usually to meet an agenda. The Press in Aotearoa accentuate the negative constantly and push stories that meet their underlying beliefs. Aotearoa is not immune to what I will call the Fox News condition.
Handle9:
If it’s easy mustn’t it be simple?
It’s neither of those things. It’s impossible.
Like I said distortion and agendas.

If it weren't for some of our investigative journalists then our first lockdown would have been a hell of a lot longer.
