People around NZ who have symptoms but not necessarily been in contact with anyone from overseas?. However it the main concentration of testing would probably be in Auckland and other centres where there have already been cases. NZers can move around the country a lot. I would have thought tourist area too, considering millions of tourists will go to those areas each year.

Ok, fair enough. How many test kits do we have and are getting in? So doctors would need to test everyone with flu like symptoms then send them one for self isolation. A colleague took his kid in today, he gets the flu every year, had it since weekend. They sent him home, f he doesn't improve come back Friday they will test him. No mention of self isolation in the interim. Seems odd.

He won't self isolate as he knows its just the flu.

It would be ideal to test everyone in NZ who got symptoms that could be Covid-19. Isolate them when test done. That seems like a lot of resource to me. Maybe not as they should be at the doctors anyway. Im not sure what facilities we have that does the test results. I would expect you would have thousand per day being tested and isolated for a few days, or when results came back

Economic impact will be massive, but if we can't get on top of this in the next three weeks, we will have to lock down our country so people can't leave home for basically the entire winter.

Note that Wuhan is still under lock down. They have had Covid-19 since November (officially December), and china put resources into wuhan from all over the country, something we do not have capacity for.

Based on what other countries including Australia have announced over the last few day, no not IMO. Are we still saying that NZers should go about their normal life?

Lockdown over winter reminds me of bears taking hibernation during winter. What worries me about this is supply chains.

We had plenty of warning this was going to happen, based on what happened in China. We could have restricted travel at the end of January when we banned China. Ironically North Korea closed their border back then, and they claim they have no cases of this, after the problems they had with measles. Although experts suspect they do.

I noticed that the Prime Minister has said "We need New Zealanders to prepare. Think about Covid-19 the same way you would a civil defence emergency."

Has NZ declared a state of emergency on this yet or is this close?

We won't see the effects of what we have done today to try and change the path, for up to a few weeks.

Have they? No overseas travel. 100 limit on gatherings. Schools open. I dont really see anything there

I haven't seen any mention of the number of tests kits they have, but it doesn't seem to be a factor. The limiting factor seems to be the staff to do the tests. But they have apparently sent 30,000 swabs out.

If someone has the flu, shouldn't they be self isolating anyway normally? I think that is also currently the advice, that anyone sick should be at home. We also don't want to be spreading colds and flu at a time like this, as that just adds to the problem IMO.

They also are banning people entering the country, except residents returning from overseas, who require 14 day self isolation. This is a big one. NZ is still currently allowing entry from most other countries including tourists, but they must all go into 14 day self isolation. The 100 limit on gatherings is also more than in NZ, which I believe is 500.

But Oz also have $20,000 fines to anyone not in self isolation when they should be. Their police are going around doing checks. Our police are doing spot checks, but I don't think they can issue fines. People may just be deported.

I wasnt aware that AUS has banned all non nationals from arriving. Good move. I think our Police are doing more then spot checks, they are tracking known arrivals.

Dr Bloomfield said today that we need to decide what we will need to do in two weeks, and do it now. That would be banning all non nationals at least. I guess we can test all flu symptoms people, that would be thousands per day? And isolate them. A family would find themselves fully isolated till the test results came back, so that will impact employment to the tune of thousand per day. That may come anyway.

If you close the schools it will affect nursing numbers in hospitals.

There are already plans for theatre to icu conversions and using anaesthetic machines as ventilators for at least the last 10 days at my dhb and I'm sure all the others

There wont be an issue with general hospital doctor shortage but rather particular specialties. ICU, Anesthetics, ED. These cant be magiced onto existence.

Certainly not one where medical students or vets are of any use other than manual labour.

There are plans to potentially upskill some interventional physicians ie cardiology are already familiar with cardiac support pathways, respiratory consultants with respiratory physiology etc. And they still would be supervised to some degree by the intensive specialties.

A lot of stuff is happening in the background, inside and between hospitals. You just dont hear about on stuff or nzhersld or facebook because people doing it have better things to do than post on social media.

... and one is missing: loosing taste and/or smell for 2-3 days according to medician's reports.

I can't sight that. The Level 4 ban is to stop outward travel (as you may not get back)
