With the articles you post, surprised didn't notice

West Coast and Bay of Plenty DHBs do not have morgues - instead, they rely on storage at funeral businesses.

Bay of Plenty DHB bought and blessed two refrigerated containers last year to prepare for Covid-19 fatalities - one is at Whakatāne Hospital and the other in Tauranga.

I knew they bought them last year. I actually didn't know they're still hanging around 18 months later still waiting for the bodies to pile up

Conversation with antivax ...

Don't want AZ, want Sinovac.

Anybody else hear the same? ie is this the new cult directive or personal decision.

If Sinovac was available, they'd want Sputnik instead. It's all just verbal diarrhoea.

Yes, this is exactly the same thing as my relative. She doesn't want Pfizer due to the mRNA thing (which I don't fully understand), apparently due to a family history of heart problems. She "heard" that 500,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson had been ordered "for Auckland" back at the start of the year but weren't used and she is waiting to get one of those as they don't do the mRNA thing, therefore there wouldn't be an issue.

I tried to explain this to her but she got totally on the defensive, so now (several days later) I'm thinking, whatever, this other relative who convinced you J&J will have no side effects and you should really be hanging out for that one instead has really got you wrapped around his finger, so I'm going to just let it go.

sbiddle: I almost think it's time for Bloomfield to go. He seems to out of touch with a number of things he's said recently and been overridden multiple times now by the Minister - yesterday being the classic example explaining the AZ policy which was then totally turned on it's end by Hipkins barely 3 1/2 hours later.

The AZ case is not necessarily inconsistent depending on how it is implemented.

On an ethical basis you cant just go handing out a treatment that you know is less effective and is higher risk without having a good reason for that.

Personally, if someone turns up wanting AZ and it's available I'd want to explain these reasons it's not the best option. If you're still going to refuse the Pfizer after knowing all the facts, then ok AZ is your choice to protect yourself and your family etc as best you can. Disclaimer: not a medical professional.

recent study showed that with the Astra Zeneca vaccine the decline in anti-spike antibody occurred quite early and there was a clear relationship between antibody levels and breakthrough infections. Decline below the anti-spike antibody threshold of 500 U/ml was reached at 96 days for AstraZeneca’s vaccine compared with 257 days for Pfizer’s.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

That feels so morbid. The media in NZ really aren't showing how bad covid is going to get. I would have hoped it would shock more people into getting vaccinated.

Because we went through 2020 and parts of 2021 without thousands of deaths, people think it's nothing. Now that people are dying at home they are all shouting "the government is doing nothing" when in fact these same people did not follow Level 3 or Level 4 rules, did not vaccinate, did not wear masks.

So yes, there's that.

It's the same crap as usual - "I don't want Pfizer because I am waiting for for Novavax". When Novavax is available they will be waiting for AZ. When this is available they will wait for Sinovac. Then for Sputnik.

Moving targets, typical.

we'll sure know soon enough. we've been crawling from 88.5-89.5% vaccinated over the last month so if it doesn't go up by much over the next month then we know

I think you're ignoring the key part of the AZ issue - Bloomfield stood there at 1pm and said that AZ was not going to be available to anybody and there would be very strict criteria. You either needed to be one of the few hundred people unable to get Pfizer due to medical conditions, or you needed to be an essential worker in a role where a vaccine mandate existed.

By 5pm Hipkins said it would be available anybody in NZ for whatever reason who didn't want Pfizer after a consultation with a medical expert to discuss the pros and cons. They are pretty much doing what you've suggested above.

The real problem for people who do get AZ is what they're going to get as a booster. I believe the UK might be the only place so far that has given AZ boosters, with most countries (incl the UK) opting for mRNA based boosters as the preferred option. We would need to go through an approval process for AZ boosters to then give them again in 6 months time.

I won't worry about a booster, just get them vaccinated first. Who knows their booster is probably going to be live SARS-CoV2
