Batman:

trump shuts US - Canada border

Actually Canada shut the border, to all but 'essential services' in spite of Trump's insistence it stay open.

That's because the PM was under pressure from the provinces, who've detected a large number of infections in US citizens crossing the border.

Trump salvaged that by saying it was his idea, and would be over with soon.
He's now describing himself as a 'wartime president', is signing the Defense Production Act - allowing him to control private sector industrial production of essential materials needed in a national security crisis.

He's also going to mail out cheques to every American to goose the economy.

The Canadian PM's announced a $82B emergency response package.

The US finally started increasing COVID-19 testing this week, I'd imagine they'll have a really big jump in numbers in the next few days.
Then the poop will really hit the spinning thing in financial markets – which, meanwhile, have hit the stoppers again.

One of Canada's largest online direct investing sites went down this morning – and is still 504'ing. That's a bit annoying.

+++ Chancellor Merkel appealed to the discipline of the population in a television speech. In the corona crisis, everyone is important, she said. She pledged support to the companies.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has described the corona crisis as the greatest challenge since World War II. "It's serious," said Merkel in a television speech, according to the pre-published speech manuscript. "Take it seriously too."

She appealed to the population to abide by the rules and restrictions. Everything that could endanger people must be reduced, she said. "We have to keep a distance from each other out of respect." It is "existential" to shut down public life as much as possible.

The guiding principle of all action now is to slow down the spread of the virus, stretch it over the months and thus save time. It will also depend on how disciplined everyone follows and implements the rules, said Merkel. "Without exception, it all depends on everyone and therefore on all of us." +++

It must be time for the Government to follow Australia & move to the 'Do Not Travel' level of advisory.   At the moment there is that level for China but not Italy.   This is seriously screwed up & another example of how NZ is late to the party.

That needs to be prevented at all cost. Maybe more transparent communication to the people could help? I don't know your situation locally. I just post honestly what I'm aware of, that others can take their own conclusions ... or not. That's all.

My local New World was quiet and well behaved yesterday. Most things in stock, except hand sanitiser which has been missing from the shelves for a while now. I expect today will be different with the jump in cases probably spooking people.

As I walked in the music playing was "Dont Worry Be Happy"! 😀

Let Trump be Trump. Maybe one day he will notice when there is no one around him and he only talks to his mirror.

kingdragonfly: Before watching this video, even though monkeys are our closest relatives, remember we're in New Zealand, and we produce more food than we can eat. We won't be having food riots.

But remember that to produce all that food we need imported stuff... fuel, tractors, fertilizer, etc, etc. And we need labour... someone's got to milk the cows. Already the kiwifruit growers are complaining about not enough labour (although that seems to be an annual thing, and the growers I assume aren't willing to increase wages above minimum wage to attract more workers).

We've had a bit of that in Dubai earlier in the week but now it's subsided. Once people see the shelves refill the next day word gets around and it seems to settle down

We're only at 115 cases so far.

Not sure how more transparent you can be, every communication I have seen is there is no need to panic buy.
