Could Omnicron maybe spell the end of coronavirus? It seems this strain is much less virulent than Delta and the other one, maybe eventually causing it to die out.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/covid-19-coronavirus-why-one-expert-says-omicron-variant-may-signal-the-end-of-covid/QUX2HI25576UZXGYAEVQTAQ2PQ/

I am glad you phrased it as a question and not a stated fact.

All I am going to say is that if this isn't it, the beginning of the end, then maybe eventually we do get lucky with a future Greek letter before they run out. What we need to know is what happens when it infects people who are not seropositive....especially say some resthome somewhere with an unvaccinated population, that would seem to be the gold standard for drawing out Covids nasty streak.

Start there, and when there is no horror death toll, hopefully none for Nana and Pop (and especially the staff...crickey) we can say....well this is different in one aspect.

Then work our way through the epidemiology that we are not getting any feedback on from the low vaccinated, high seropositive, mainly younger groups testing positive in Gauteng right now.

It is kind of meaningless to say that symptoms are mild in a group that was exposed to a raging poorly tracked Delta wave hey.

But happy thoughts, so far so good, might as well show people the path.

At the end of the day, the way out of this thing is not going to be via six monthly injections forever and ever, because people will eventually not comply....take their chances.

The way out....is for the virus each year, to top up our immune system in the fashion of other Corona viruses, in the meantime suck it up folks and keep getting jabbed and stop asking mum and dad :"are were there yet?"

There seems to be a lack of common sense. How can Air NZ operate when it is even more confined and is also 'public transport'

Someone needs to get these people in a room and knock their head together to get some common sense decisions. This is meant to be the new normal.

Yep, someone in the news lately said Auckland needs to be green, ok just for hospo.Reminds me of 2 weeks after 26 arch 2020 when its too much and its too long.

We are entering the business vs health bitching

Christopher Luxon?

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-national-leader-christopher-luxon-says-auckland-should-be-in-green-setting/XDBNMH3T52JLBGXE3GEPFWBDMQ/

Even the Govt have acknowledged that Auckland doesn't meet the criteria for red under the traffic light system - so I don't see the issue with people raising that as a very valid issue. We all know now that Auckland will move to orange on the 15th at the very latest anyway when the Auckland borders open.

Just on the Aircraft thingy and the public transport system.

Planes have super duper air flow ventilation systems.

Buses and trains do not.

That is why of the thousands of flights coming into New Zealand carrying Covid, there is minimal on spread in a air cabin. And that included the old days....before pre departure testing, however there was some spread....long haul flights with your mask off to eat cannot prevent every infection.

However there has not been a Snakes on a plane Covid Air horror story, so the movie probably won't use Covid, more likely we are talking zombies and vampires in the film version.

The IATA testing of modern aircraft have a viral particle removal rating of 99.993% by Hepa filtration.

The airflow is directed Top down, so Covid is sucked out at floor level.

Planes are apples....Buses and Trains are something else entirely.

Luxon on his boorish open up carry on is the kind of thing a twit would say right when a new and poorly understood variant was raging as countries all over the world who have had a looser attitude than us....are screaming lock the doors.

That is why Luxon is not a scientist I guess. He is not coming across as very bright right now. Change the record, try waiting at least till Pfizer tell us in two weeks what Omicron means for 3.7 million of your citizens eh?

And the one documented case of the Emirates plane to NZ was the subject of quite a few details articles in NZ media (one such example here from Newsroom and there was another written by Siouxsie Wiles that was in the Spinoff).

All theorised about how spread could have occured onboard, but presumably due to their lack of understanding of how aircraft operate didn't take in or mention a key aspect that was reported overseas and that was that the APU was switched off something like 30 mins while the plane was on the ground refuelling at Kuala Lumpur. Nobody left the plane during this time, and the significance of the APU being shut down is that there would have been no air circulating in the cabin which is clearly the perfect scenario for spread.

Not necessarily. If it was on a GPU and PCA stand, which is when the APU is normally switched off, then that is taken over by airport supply.

Hamilton mother Karina Haira, has (pretty bravely I think) disclosed her identity provided what I think is the most detailed & gripping personal account of being sick with covid-19 delta strain in NZ.

I will take that under advisement. Covid is the enemy here. Some people have opinions, others have a health advisory, that is probably the relative weighting for each of us consider in these calls to scrap MIQ and Green light Auckland right now.

Auckland is red because it has been a very long tail. And even though we are living with Covid, we need to raise the temperature slowly on the whole thing.

@Sup

There is a Politics subforum that doesn't appear in the sidebar on the main page. Incl a covid response thread. You can discuss politics to your heart's content in that subforum.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=184&topicid=289737

Mods have made it pritty clear that this thread is to be clean of politic's. - a handful of users have been banned from posting in this thread for ignoring warnings about this.

Discussing policy (incl policy proposals) seems to be fine, but beyond acknowledging where the policy came from, try to keep to the policy itself.

Would be nice for you to stay around, you say some good stuff.

Amazing woman.

I thought at the start of the video that I was looking at someone who had recovered from Covid (I missed the day six thing). So based on watching her have to take big breaths between speech I thought, well lady you look like your lungs copped a bit a of hiding.

Not knowing at the time that in fact i was looking at someone on the way down.

Scary to count her Resps in bed there while talking, the flushed face, nasal O2 in situ, looks stable. The anticoagulant therapy, pretty serious stuff.

You can see how by watching her breathing, that if she was not on oxygen, and still at home, that she wold probably be toast.

Ahh ok she just took out the Nasal high flow therapy as I type....and cripes this is a patient in the acute phase of Respiratory failure.

Not good not good.

I was surprised today when I passed a McDonald's in Wellington with a big sign saying "Take Away Orders Only".

I stopped there to use the bathroom and they checked my Vaccine pass but there was no dining in going on. Worse than L2.

Yeah it is worse than level 3 , because at least in L3 they didn't need to check your vaccine passport to go into the establishment and it was takeaway only too in L3. Not sure on the logic of no dining if patrons are vaccinated and they are checking to make sure. Maybe because the staff aren't, but you would hope the person that goes up to you to check your pass is vaccinated, as they are coming within ones personal space to do this ? But certainly  other restaurants  are allowing people to dining in.

Okay apologies folks, particularly the moderators I did read the forum rules but missed the intent of the demarcation between the political and health and fitness threads. My fault. I tried to edit the post after Handle9 told me no politics, but it was too late.
