Yes, a gathering is many many things. Bus station, train station. My workplace, in our building in ChCh, has started rostering people to work from home a week about. Dilute the office space.

I was musing as I do and thinking the government should be implementing rationing similar to that used during WW2 given that a percentage of the population cannot self ration.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

In the interim however if the government ups the restrictions which is a certainty then its work from home or no work at all. Flexible companies may survive but many will not.

While I agree that some businesses can make that happen, I run a large workshop. None of my people can work from home. If we close, then the trucks don't get repaired/maintained. The trucks that deliver stuff. If they aren't on the road...

So you would have the unemployed baristas and bartenders from around the country be moved to Te Puke for a couple of months to pick kiwifruit? And their families? Presumably with a top-up from the government to whatever their incomes would have been?

The kiwifruit won't be left unpicked... as usual, Pacific Islanders will be imported to pick it.

Just a thought is it possible for your engineers to visit the truck/customer and have your staff based at home?

A colleage suggested it will be over by Easter. I told him I'd expect it to be tapering off at Xmas if we are lucky. News article yesterday I think aligned this with the Great Wars, Depression. I've been fairly upbeat on this, or less downbeat is a better way to describe it. It may well not bite as bad as other countries, but it could. Perhaps less cases and fatalaties than elsewhere but the place will likely grind to a halt potentially. Thats when that msuing will be kicking in, if not before. If we do ration it needs to be early so that its spreading the issue, not solving it when its already hit, ration wise

Where exactly are they going to send all this Kiwifruit? Its hardly a staple food, more a luxury item I would have thought. Or will we send it to all the people who hoarded toilet paper to help them use it all?

This is a bit disconcerting, 2 year old returning from NZ tests positive in South Africa.

Guess the question to be asked is this 2 year old a family member of confirmed case in NZ.

But if they were related to a confirmed case why were they not tested or in isolation? Why were they allowed to fly?

Or was this an unknown community transmission case that was picked up in another country? Further it does not seam very reassuring if our

first case of community transmission was picked up by another country!!

I think these are legitimate questions the NZ public deserves answered fast if the govt wants to retain any credibility.

Short answer is no.

My parts people could possibly work from home, but would they still need to come to receipt parts from suppliers. The rest of the staff rely on the tooling/facilities in the workshop to do their tasks - cranes, welders etc. None of which is portable.

There are a significant amount of businesses that need to operate for this country to remain open, even if.people are told to stay home.

Your colleague is dreaming. The affects of this will be at least 18 months. Easter is three weeks away we will probably still be in the early stages of community transmission.

Eh? I'd have thought kiwifruit was pretty much a staple fruit and vege item - hardly a luxury.

Hopefully NZ's food/primary produce production and exports will hold up much better than other sectors of the economy - which for the time being are completely stuffed (aviation, tourism & hospitality).

Once upon a time the great US of A was the goto country for rushing around the world in times of crisis. This dashing here and dashing there and handing out humanitarian aid and barely disguised civilian advisors has slowed to a virtual trickle over the last few years. Why, because of America First and Make America Great Again campaigns and their "Old Money Republican Families and Businesses" and their barely disguised "America Only" white supremacists groups who have managed to greatly influence a disenfranchised and splintered GOP. As Donald Trump said at his inaugural speech; “From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first, America first.”

Just as England did in the late nineteen and early twentieth centuries and then America after WW2, any and every country no matter its size, who had economic, health or/and natural disaster problems or/and an abundance of untapped or mismanaged natural wealth, they both sent in advisors and aid in the form of goods and money and they rebuilt or built airports and harbours and industry. Then they stayed. They strongly influenced elections and education, all with the hidden agenda of spreading their dominance and therefore influence around the globe and of course to make money.

But wait another great economic power is rushing in to fill the gap - CHINA. Donald Trumps actions since his election and dear I say it, COVID-19, has been just what China has been waiting for.

Now the optimist in me wants to believe that China has no hidden agenda here, and they are filling this ever growing hole left by America with a great big humanitarian heart. But the cynic in me thinks not.

China is rushing medical experts to Italy, test kits to the Philippines, medical equipment to Serbia. Ironically the Chinese Billionaire Jack Ma is even pledging to donate 500,00 coronavirus testing kits and one million face masks to the "good old US of A“ They are also pledging assistance by way of donations and medical expertise and advisors to any and all the ’Tin Pot’ nations of the world mainly on the African continent and worryingly for us, they are also trying to nudge their way into the Pacific Islands. In doing all of this they are demonstrating that they are THE Global Leader now and NOT America.

China has deep pockets, medical, scientific and industrial expertise and they are willing to use all of this to their advantage. Their ever growing global ascension of their political, military and economic influence is in direct contrast to America’s new world view stance of “America first, America first.”.

But I strongly believe this largess of China’s has a stink in its tail just as did England's and America’s did fifty to hundred fifty years ago.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
