The Olympic games are simply not important.

Whilst I agree that identifying the person who can run fastest or throw further or whatever on a specified day is totally unimportant, the reality is that billions of dollars depend on it happening. Sky has spent hundreds of millions, maybe even billions, of dollars on buying the rights. People are already talking about ditching Sky with no Super or SANZAR rugby; no Olympics could be the death of Sky. (Not that I personally care very much about the survival or otherwise of the Sky dinosaur, just saying that for some people it's really important). Tokyo and Japan have also spent billions on setting up for the Games. So from this point of view the Olympic Games are *very* important to many people.

I can imagine that enforcing quarantine periods for all athletes, officials, and TV crews would mean that they could compete without passing on covid19. (Presumably equestrians have already been doing this with their mounts?) After the quarantine period, all infected athletes would no longer be contagious, and could safely interact with uninfected athletes. I doubt that you could do it for spectators though.

It is simply not important. The resources are needed for important duties. This is a planet changing event and with the predicted death toll in the millions a sporting event pales into insignificance.

China has deep pockets, medical, scientific and industrial expertise and they are willing to use all of this to their advantage. Their ever growing global ascension of their political, military and economic influence is in direct contrast to America’s new world view stance of “America first, America first.”.

But I strongly believe this largess of China’s has a stink in its tail just as did England's and America’s did fifty to hundred fifty years ago.

And if things turn to custard militarily in a feat of awesome planning, our frigates are both pier side and cut into pieces in Canada.  A strategic blunder on several levels given investing in a third or fourth frigate to cover this period had been signalled as a requirement for years. We also screwed up not picking a proven, faster, and more effective upgrade available from Australia that has also ended up being vastly cheaper after big cost overruns from the hack job being done in Canada.

Tonic water, originally created by the British in India to protect against malaria, contained chloroquine and quinine (hence it's bitter taste)
Now it turns out chloroquine, orally, works as a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, and helps block SARS CoV-2 infection..

So - while everyone's hoarding toilet paper, I've stocked up with lots of Bombay Sapphire and a crate of tonic.
It's a shame modern tonic has so little chloroquine in it - I'll make up for that by drinking twice as much..

Where exactly are they going to send all this Kiwifruit? Its hardly a staple food, more a luxury item I would have thought. Or will we send it to all the people who hoarded toilet paper to help them use it all?

Eh? I'd have thought kiwifruit was pretty much a staple fruit and vege item - hardly a luxury.

Hopefully NZ's food/primary produce production and exports will hold up much better than other sectors of the economy - which for the time being are completely stuffed (aviation, tourism & hospitality).

So we are distributing it to at need kiwis? Doesn't seem that way.

RNZ says 1 Northland, 2 Auckland, 1 Rotorua, 2 Taranaki, 2 Southland.

Edit: Confirmed by MOH.

Again, I agree that the sporting event is unimportant. But the dependencies on it are important, to many many people.

I wonder whether your willingness to sacrifice the jobs and incomes and homes of many of those people is matched by your willingness to make similar sacrifices? Personally, I'm not ready to go there. And I expect the Govt to manage things so that I won't have to. So I'm not willing to destroy those peoples' lives if it's not necessary.

Hawke's Bay panic shopping report: Time has been drawing near for my fortnightly shopping expedition into town. This is how I always do my shopping, but now it looks like I am being driven by panic. Good thing I don't live in Oz or ScoMo would be shouting at me.

Maybe an element of panic is creeping in. I have been seeing the news reports of new virus cases and supermarket shelves being cleared out. I decided to bring my trip forward a couple days just in case.

Traffic in Hastings seems pretty normal. Maybe a little lighter than usual.

Countdown was fuller than normal, but not Doomsday packed. What struck me was that nearly every shopping cart that emerged was filled to overflowing. I haven't seen that before, even at Christmas.

Inside not a mask in sight. Not a hope of maintaining social distance, either. I'm not sure how they intend to work that one out. People were busy but not aggressive. No battles over toilet paper. Hand sanitiser provided at the door. There were nearly as many Countdown staff as shoppers in the store, constantly restocking shelves. As a result, few shortages and no conflicts. The only thing I noticed was a paucity of tinned peas and corn. But there were plenty of beans of various description and also an abundance of other tinned goods. Lots of tuna.

So busier than usual but no panic and no major shortages. It will be interesting to see what it is like next time.

In the coming months we will all have to make sacrifices and take on board that our government will be making decisions and placing restrictions on us that normally we would never accept. I /we have already cancelled two trips we had planned for this year that has cost us financially. We fully expect our income will be reduced in the coming year and the financial impact will be significant.

Yes there will be a financial loss if the games do not proceed. The logistics and resources required to run these games would be better used in the combat of this outbreak. That includes, accommodation, transport, communications, food and drink, medical and security. The IOC still saying these will proceed are demonstrating either incredible incredulity or wilful disregard of safety, or extreme selfishness or all of these.

Does your grocery outlet do online ordering? if so I would just do that and get it delivered. Makes shopping less stressful and eliminates the need to deal with idiots.

We live way beyond any home delivery boundaries. It would take an Amazon drone to reach us.

Likewise, however we have friends closer to town who are within the boundaries, that we have stuff delivered too. Perhaps that could be an option for you?

Damn thats a shame. I have reverted to home delivery like I did when wheelchair bound. I find it too depressing to go near shops right now.
