This is depressing.

I feel for the poor young woman in this story, especially having such a selfish idiotic sister; even worse the sister has kids. Way to go having a mother like that. Personally, I would refuse to support any relative of mine for behaving in this way. Absolutely appalling.

NSW today:

Obviously a big jump in cases today, bring the trend back towards exponential growth.

Continued growth in Hospital & ICU numbers, but they don't seem to be surging at the same rate.

A couple of days back it was mentioned in that none of the ICU cases were omicron. (no idea if that still holds), given the increase in ICU numbers despite this, it suggests there is (or was a couple of weeks back) a Delta wave going in NSW, combined with the omicron wave...

It will be interesting to watch Morrison when the exponential rate hits 25K.

I do not know what NSW testing capacity is, but we are about to see it broken.

Given the way the disease behaves real cases are now in the 10K plus range, mostly asymptomatic, mostly very mild, mostly not cause for people to get tested.

Now we wait to see how many of those climbing admissions go to ICU in ten days from day of admission. Probably less. Probably still quite a chunk of people.

i think Australia is really important as a case on how to fight the omicron strain. They are saying it doesn't put people in Hospital so it wont put a strain on our health system and we are going to ride it out just relying on the common sense of our population to do what is right for them and others so we dont need lockdowns. Every other country are going back to lockdowns and doing what they would if it was the delta strain. So we have both ways of doing things played out in the real world and for NZ we should be watching what to do when Omicron takes over here, if it works in Australia then we may not need to go back to lockdowns.

yup.

If the current trend continues, 25k is roughly a week away.

I think the PCR test system is already broken.

In short strict PRC testing requirements for those traveling interstate are causing test centers to be flooded. Causing massive queues, which cause issues for access of those who are symptomatic or are close contacts.

The below reports 5 days waits on test results:

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/dec/20/covid-test-result-waiting-times-blow-out-to-five-days-threatening-interstate-christmas-reunions

And the issues caused by the strict requirement of negitive test results within 72 hours for travel.

I think NZ did well to keep the travel load off the PCR testing system, by using rapid tests for travel.

There has go to be more to that story than what is in the text.

The biggest one is that Aroha’s sister left her job before the traffic light system came into play. Why? Standard play for those not willing to disclose their vaccination status is to have their employer stand them down, meaning they get the 4 weeks paid stand down period, and don't have a long waiting period before they are eligible for the benefit. But then it is subsequently mentioned she gets a benefit? - perhaps it was a casual or under the table job?

cruxis:

Aroha is already being an enabler for her sisters behavior, don't want to make that worse.

Big issues:

  • Its fraud, with big penalties if caught.
  • It is not mentioned where in the far north they are, but many of the community are small and tight knit. Kinda hard to get away with using another persons details when there is a decent chance that somebody at each of the vaccination locations within a 30 minute drive will already know your name.
  • Medical risks - Taking more doses of vaccine than has been trialed & approved puts yourself at risk.
  • Some anti-vax people are so staunch, and their status makes up enough of their identity that they would be unwilling to lie and say they are vaccinated.
  • Would be hard to unwind if her sister changed her mind. Say there was a close to home outbreak, and she now wanted to be fully vaccinated she wouldn't be able to under her own name any more.
  • Could result in harm to the sister - If for example, she caught covid-19, and the because of here age and (false) vaccination status was deemed to be likely a mild case, and wasn't given things like oral antivirals (not yet available) because of that.
  • Reduces the odds of her sister getting vaccinated, and allowing her children to get vaccinated.

There's no way I would be lying to enable someone else's stupidity, family or not.  I also wouldn't be enabling them by giving financial support - people need to take responsibility for their own actions and their consequences.

NSW reintroducing (mild) restrictions:

"NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has refused for days to impose mask mandates in indoor settings, and he says again now that “we promote personal responsibility and I have talked a lot about that”.

But he said that he had held talks with the Health Minister, the retail union and some other employer and employee groups before he announced today that masks will be required in all indoor settings from midnight tonight. The mandate will remain in place until January 27.

Density limits have also been introduced for indoor hospitality venues. From December 27 to January 27, the state will reintroduce the one person per 2 square metre rule.

“The biggest concern that has come through over the last 24 to 48 hours has been the impact on health staff,” Mr Perrottet said.

He said 1500 health staff were either sick or requiring testing because they were close contacts of COVID-19 cases, and that “has put that pressure on”.

Elective Surgery likely to be affected:

"NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has admitted that rising COVID-19 infections in the state are likely to have flow-on effects to elective surgery next year."

Not all beneficiaries are required to have a stand down.

Not all workers are not allowed to receive the benefit.

Elective Surgery likely to be affected:

"NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has admitted that rising COVID-19 infections in the state are likely to have flow-on effects to elective surgery next year."

The retail sector complained to Perrottet that business has crashed.

Why?

Because his and Morrison's idiot Trumpian response to omicron has scared foot traffic away from the beaches.

"But Martin this holiday is the most important time of the year for the Islanders...if we close the beaches now it will be a disaster"

- Larry Vaughn Mayor of Amity JAWS 1975

After five thousand New South Welshmen suffered a Omicron Shark attack in a single swim, NSW premier Dominique Perrottet talks to some other bloke who is a shark expert, so he can blame them for the 'Shark Advice'.

Cronullar resident and Sharks fan Scomocron fully endorses his brethren from the faithful, and the two were seen praying together and speaking in tongues and they were 'prompted' by a little voice to keep the faith, the ASX will rebound and the private health care sector is booming.

...

do they mention the fact in London that half the people in hospital in London were already there and tested positive for omicron while in there and the chief medical officer in Australia has come out and said that after 4 weeks of Omicron in Australia there hasnt been one case of omicron ending up in the ICU. After 4 weeks in counties with high Omicron cases the hospital rates are not rising in ratio with the number of cases

"... chief medical officer in Australia has come out and said that after 4 weeks of Omicron in Australia ..."  (4 weeks ago?)

Seems to be some sugar coating of the situation?

  • First reported case of Omicron in the UK was 27 Nov (still less than 4 weeks ago)
  • First reported local case of Omicron in the AU, 3 Dec (3 weeks ago)
  • Daily case numbers in NSW rose above 300 only 2 weeks ago
  • Current significant spike in cases numbers started only 10 days ago (536 > 804 > 1360)

Given the timeline, it is not entirely surprising no ICU cases had been confirmed as Omicron one or two days ago, or when ever he made that statement.

Not certain what the ICU numbers are in the UK but as of 21 Dec there had been 18 Omicron deaths in England, and 195 hospitalisations (England), up from your figure yesterday of 133 for UK.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1043466/20211222_OS_Daily_Omicron_Overview.pdf

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, the other critical factor that needs to taken into account is the age demographic of people infected by Omicron.

Sure, it would be great if severe illness is much less likely.  But it is too soon to judge this.

Various figures have been put forward for UK, ranging from the ICL (Neil Ferguson) estimate that "those infected by omicron were 15 to 20 percent less likely to go to an emergency room with severe symptoms", to others saying others suggesting up to 60%.  But even a 60% reduction may not be sufficient to limit impact on the health system given the much higher rates of infection with Omicron.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/omicron-severity-uk/2021/12/22/303d4d26-6337-11ec-9b51-7131fa190c5e_story.html
