I've been monitoring the covid traffic pages.. cause.. why not. not frequently enough. but the Dec 22 changes...

Some slight wording chances. Which reflect the booster terms we have talked of here.

Out is 'get your booster dose' in is 'get your vaccine booster'

There's a new '2 shots for summer' campaign page.

-- Shops, including outdoor markets and banks, can open with capacity limits based on 1-metre distancing.

They can choose to follow My Vaccine Pass requirements, though this will not affect their capacity limits. They can require you to show your My Vaccine Pass to enter the shop.

now (as if it wasn't clear already?!?!)

-- Shops, including outdoor markets, banks and takeaway-only businesses, can open with capacity limits based on 1-metre distancing.

Some retail businesses can choose to follow My Vaccine Pass requirements, though this will not affect their capacity limits. They can require you to show your My Vaccine Pass to enter the shop.

'Public facing' has been added to front of 'workers (paid and non-paid) at food and drink businesses and services, including within events'

/facepalm/ But I guess clarifies it for businesses who may chose their own way.

The Queensland Chief Health Officer to stated they wanted Covid to spread across Queensland so it becomes endemic. He stated everybody will gain immunity, either by being vaccinated or catch the virus and gain immunity that way.
Not sure what to make of this statement. I think he is admitting that there is nothing to be done and they can only slow it slightly. Is he realistic or something else?

An alternative view of the current NSW Omicron outbreak.

Proportion of cases in the 70+ age bracket dropped significantly when the case numbers started to increase two weeks ago.  Now at the lowest sustained level in the last ~6 months (2.35% ave over the last 14 days), and half the proportion at the peak of the August Delta outbreak (4.8% two week ave).  (Data only available for the last six months)

As shown in the second plot, the sharp rise in cases in the 70+ age bracket (Omicron impact?) started only 8 days ago.  Not surprising that no ICU Omicron cases had been confirmed yesterday?

First local cases of Covid in WA for many months.  Backpacker ex QLD, out and about for 2 weeks before confirmed. Thought likely to be Delta

Thanks for the explanation, I have a dyslexia with mathematical constructs including graphs. Thanks to the wording I can see the beauty of the meaning. Much appreciated. I get this point, only eight days gone by, still two weeks to know if omicron is going to kill the people Covid feeds on.

I think in some ways he is the first honest man in Australian leadership to admit what their covert plan was. To encourage spread.

We are literally talking about an omicron outbreak where Australian politicians said no worries take off your masks and stop QR code scanning after omicron blew up.

This of course is the plan conservatives favor, the short term open the shops for the Christmas boom retail high of the entire year plan.

They were still trying to blabber to people to do what ever you like...right up until Australians went into a panic and ran from the shops.

Even as late as this Morning Morrison was banging on about choices and we will not reverse our decision.

Well seven days is how long their let it spread idea lasted. Seven days they ignored the health experts.

And now what do we have? The most miserable Christmas, the most anxiety provoking holiday in Australian history.

These people would have preferred to have boosted the population before omicron...so you are right.,..they are spreading a message about let her rip while having an omicron gun held to the temple.

This was never a well thought out plan it was the one that was forced on them.

Morrison was mocking the modellers this morning.

So Omicron is closing in here in our City (in GER) … new restrictions from 24.12.21, 00:00h on for the next couple of weeks (partially valid for vaccinated people as well). 8% of new infections are already the new variation. Christmas markets closed, no parties, no fireworks (forbidden to be sold) but at least we’ll have snow at 1DegC :-)  … and the same procedure as every year (James).

i think Australia is really important as a case on how to fight the omicron strain. They are saying it doesn't put people in Hospital so it wont put a strain on our health system and we are going to ride it out just relying on the common sense of our population to do what is right for them and others so we dont need lockdowns. Every other country are going back to lockdowns and doing what they would if it was the delta strain. So we have both ways of doing things played out in the real world and for NZ we should be watching what to do when Omicron takes over here, if it works in Australia then we may not need to go back to lockdowns.

The real question is what NZ will do in 1-2 weeks when NSW and then Australian cases as a whole peak and then start rapidly declining. Will we still go down the new path we're going down with delayed reopenings or will we just backtrack?

The simple reality right now is that total Covid cases in NSW are waaaay greater than the official numbers and there isn't significant pressure yet on the health system. Many people can't even get tests and those that do are waiting days and days for results.

Do you know a single person who is or are you just boldy claiming your view represents every Australian?

I don't know a single person in Australia who's looking forward to a miserable xmas or going on an anxiety provoking holiday. They're out enjoying life and going on holiday with the freedoms that they now have. Just about everybody I know there is well past caring about Covid - many stopped caring a long time ago.

What is your position then? Do you think we should let it rip through communities? Open up everything, forget vaccine pass? Let flights in and out from any country. without MIQ or isolation?

What is exactly your opinion here, @sbiddle?

I'm a realist. Omicron is going to end up ripping through our country eventually regardless of what we do - that's an almost dead certainty. Once we have our first CT of it there is no going back, ad with the transmissibility of Omicron we're dreaming if we think there won't be leaks through MIQ very soon as case numbers inside MIQ soar.

I agree with this but you didn't answer my questions. What is your position? What would you do? Open up everything, forget vaccine pass? Let flights in and out from any country. without MIQ or isolation?

Here is a random, way out thought. Everyone knows that we can't keep Covid out, and for a good while now, its been about suppression while we up the vaccination coverage. Maybe we could keep Covid out as best we can and wait till 98% vaccination? (Chch for example is 98$ first vax now, in a few short weeks it will be 98% fully vaxxed) Then we could maybe vaccinate 5-11yo to further increase the overall population coverage. Maybe we could also do boosters at a 4 month level? And in that time hospital beds and ICU are fine, and many of us are doing what we do daily.

Just a wild thought, instead of letting it rip when the job is only half done....

Will be interesting to see if you can force 'herd immunity' on everyone. Regardless of anything, not everyone is going to go out and circulate with the idea of contracting Covid this summer. Large numbers of people will still try and minimise the odds by masking up but also mostly by simply not going out.
