I see his close contact buddy did a set in Christchurch on Tuesday night. Plenty of potential for Omicron to get a foothold on both islands then.

It would be interesting to know if he had any sort of official paperwork showing that he was vaccinated and whether the people at each of those places requested to see it.

Also would be interested to know who gets the home isolation option and who goes through MIQ.

From my understanding, MIQ has had spare rooms from some recent voucher releases and the stay was reduced to one week.

Perhaps the reduction to one week stay is one reason there have been spare rooms. Some others might be people deferring their trip to NZ on anticipation of no MIQ in 2022. Why does someone arriving from the UK get self isolation, when it should have been possible to find them a room.

Or did he get out of MIQ early?

Edit: it appears that the new 10 day rule only kicks in for people arriving after 11:59 pm 23-Dec.

Everyone got 3 days self isolation after 7 days in a facility and meeting all low risk indicators - this person didn't get any special treatment. This only ended last Thursday.

Ok thanks, I just checked and it appears that he would have been in MIQ when the rule changed, but the rule change only kicks in for people arriving after the 23rd Dec.

if he had 3 negative tests in MIQ then to get Omicron he was exposed to it in MIQ or he has had it and recovered and it's like a false positive, should be easy to find out on who he came in contact with in MIQ and if anyone has since then tested positive .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Thanks. Didn't read every page, missed that one.

In any case, the precedent set for breaking the rules appears to be just a $750 fine, so perhaps not a lot of money for an international DJ.

Were probably ok, but who needs this crap.
Especially as there would have been real essential workers and more deserving in queue.
Time for a musical interlude to calm the nerves.

Where have all the DJ's gone, long time passing ?
Where have all the DJ's gone, isolation noooo ?
Where have all the DJ's gone ?
Gone to the Nightclub with Omicron.
Oh when will they ever learn.
Oh when will they ever learn.

networkn: Imagine if we had a proper vaccine passport system and if you are isolating your pass is deactivated.... imagine that.

A proper vaccine passport - like nowhere else in the western world?

The previous whinging about this was that it wasn’t the EU system, which is a static QR code which doesn’t change if you are in isolation.

He potentially didn't have a vaccine pass anyway. People coming to NZ are still struggling to get foreign vaccinations accepted, most are still getting temporary exemption  letters after they apply - based on the issues somebody I know recently had I'd be surprised if he had an exemption letter yet unless it had been organised for him in advance.

But secondly it shows the failings of a vaccine passport system anyway particularly with Omicron where you're just as likely to catch and spread it whether you're vaccinated or not...

Mine took around 21 days and got issued on the 22nd of December. My wife’s took around 16 days and got issued on the same day as mine.

We applied after we got our boosters.

You have to be double vaxxed and have an appropriate international certificate  to get on a plane to come here. The airlines check it and, from my wife's experience going to the UK a couple of weeks ago, they are very thorough in checking it.

You also need a -ve PCR test within 48 hours of departure.

This was always flawed IMO. They should have gone back to requiring 14 days MIQ as soon as Omicron was seen as a threat, and that should have applied to everyone including those already in MIQ.  Then we could have avoided this leak.
We also can't trust people will isolate at home properly. Home MIQ IMO is only suitable if we already had omicron in the community. The potential costs of this leak could be huge if it has spread, as it was totally avoidable IMO if we had been following the MIQ procedures of 6 months ago.

Given the timing, it seems likely he caught it in/when leaving MIQ rather than came with it, in which case home isolation (if actually done) is more of a safety net than just a longer MIQ stay.

If someone caught it leaving at day 10 (or 14, or 50) and was straight out into the community without a further test you would not pick it up until even later or maybe when it spread to someone else.

Trouble is, that is what this guy did; that is, straight out into the community, including nightclub, when he was supposed to be in home isolation waiting for his 9 day test result (the one that turned out to be positive).

Yes, but with the norm now being 10 days in MIQ and out into the wild, the risk may actually be worse. You're more likely to catch it in MIQ than anywhere else, and if you catch it on the day you're out (at day whatever - it makes no difference) then it's not going to get picked up unless you're symptomatic.

If this guy did 10 days instead of 7, but caught it on day 9/10 he would have a clear day 9 test and no follow up. At least with 3 days at home you have a chance to pick it up in a setting you're also not likely to catch it at the same time.

Yes, the trouble is compliance, but even at partial compliance that's still a greater safety net that just release at 10 (or 50 days).

The other issue is that if he did catch it in MIQ, which seems likely, he won't be the last. MIQ leaked Delta numerous times (that we know of) and that was a fraction as infectious. Even following all the rules, it's only a matter of time.
