sen8or: and this is one reason why I despise unions with a passion and think they should be relegated to the same place in history as the dodo, the moa and DVD shops. Everyone deserves fair pay and conditions, no question, ...

Unions tip the scales somewhat in favour of the employee. There exists an asymmetry of power & knowledge between the corporation and the individual. Remember, together we stand, divided we fall. Right out of the starting blocks, employees are at a disadvantage. They already are "many" instead of "one".

As to your comment about "fair pay and conditions". There are a lot of companies that do not provide fair pay and/or conditions. It's one of the reasons we have some people working three jobs & i.m.o, gig workers.
Like everything, there a few that spoil it for the rest of us & abuse the system for their own gain. That applies as much to corporations as to unions.

Here is an interesting story about unions & strikes: NPR's Planet Money - SPAM strikes back. ... workers are striking against a CEO they've never met, someone who likely makes close to 350 times their salary ...

debo: I think the leason to be learned from the previous posts is to take MSM articles with a pinch of salt.

Its in their interest to keep stuff simmering, with a sprinkle of sensationalism thrown in. AFAIK, the Govt and MoH report numbers and give advice to the public.

In all new "well duh" research... Taking horse paste is no more effective than taking nothing for treating COVID symptoms. But it gives you diarrhoea.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2789362?guestAccessKey=58760460-df0f-4790-9257-8f3682dca39b

The most common adverse event reported was diarrhea (14 [5.8%] in the ivermectin group and 4 [1.6%] in the control group).

Sorry.. I know I am a terrible person but I had to laugh when I read this as the earnest way they wrote it in the article.

Batman: Maybe the students are right

Having seen the disruptions that a controlled peak has caused in Australia with high vaccination and elsewhere.
Hong Kong with low vaccination due to mistrust in Government may be showing you can do worse.
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/hong-kong-mass-testing-details-still-being-worked-out-lam-says

""
Quarantine facilities in Hong Kong have reached capacity and hospital beds are more than 90 per cent full as cases spiral, with some patients, including elderly, left lying on beds outside in chilly, sometimes rainy weather.
""

While it sounds all very nice if you have a large full freezer, a roomy house, a few streaming services and some cash to tide you over.
No co-morbidity or DIY accident that might send you to overcrowded A&E...

Having Hospitals, Ambulance services ( Remember the call in Australia to manage your own urgent transport to Hospital )
If you need urgent on the spot attention of a paramedic and such.

Logistics , Supermarkets , Home delivery,  Health help lines , all sorts of essential services overwhelmed is hardly a good thing.
There are some indications that peaks burn out healthcare workers and after emergency they start leaving.

Our largest export market has already fired a shot or two across the bows if its unhappy with our measures around food processing.
Peak of picking season for apples, kiwifruit and such to come.
Unfortunately it seems they wait till product arrives on the wharf before they raise the flag.

Ever decreasing waves that people can get used to managing and living without huge social disruption is probably better overall ?

I tend to look at Australia to see what is coming here. And there you can see from where the peak was there is a long high tail. Covid is not going away in a hurry. Victoria and NSW peaked at over 40k cases recorded a day early Jan. They are still getting ~7,000 case a day 6 weeks later.
Plus all the asymptomatic/untested people who have had (currently have) covid.
I don't think the public really realize we have a few more years of "not normal" ahead of us.

Interesting ABC Coronacast podcast summarising the 4 options for the covid in the future SAGE in the UK came up with.

I don't know about Australia, but I have some insight into what is going on in Norway.

If Australia is anything like Norway the numbers don't really tell the whole story.

In Norway they have cut way back on testing, so the actual number of infected are probably a lot higher than what the statistics show.

I am guessing the same is true for Australia.

"The Victorian Quarantine Hub has an initial capacity of 500 people, however there won’t be many taken to the Mickleham camp in its early days due to the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions."

Too little, too late.

Put USA on a graph and everyone else looks better you could once say, then there is Bulgaria.
Not doing so well at all, very low vaccination, rising nationalist anti vaccine and measures political party.

Bulgaria: Fighting a losing battle against COVID
Only 29% of people in Bulgaria are fully vaccinated. Half the population is determined not to get the vaccine. The omicron wave confronts the country with serious challenges.

Where can I find the number of cases in ICU? I can only find numbers in hospital, but doesn’t break it down further.

As at 0900 this morning, there is no one in ICU/HDU. Apologies for not being able to give you a link / source though.
