There is a simple alternative they are willing to use with plenty of unvaccinated donors willing to donate, Why wont NZ Blood Service use just them ? Is it just pride not to give into the Anti-Vaxers or a can't bend the rules thing.

You do not want to open that door.....

I only want blood from vaccinated people, I only want blood from people with blue eyes, ..... I only want blood from XXX people , not from YYY people....

There are plenty of groups of people with very strongly held beliefs and you will never hear the end of it....

Bloody hell. Just bloody use the unvaccinated donors blood, Process it, save the baby, then deal with Anti-Vaxers Family later if it so urgent.

What if they need more blood? Pause surgery and go to court?

What if the blood were damaged eg fridge malfunction? Pause surgery and go to court?

Blood service is not a supermarket.

As I mentioned, a consenting adult can decline surgery, just go home. But can't do that with child.

When being an anti-vaxxer makes you sabotage the national grid: Graham Philip: First sabotage convict imprisoned, attempted to bring down national grid - NZ Herald

Graham Philip, a 62-year-old IT professional and Covid conspiracy theorist was charged with seven counts of wilful damage last December. The charges were upgraded to seven of sabotage earlier this year. He was also convicted of unlawfully entering agricultural land.

The charges relate to alleged attacks on Transpower infrastructure last November, which caused approximately $1.25 million dollars in damage. One of the attacks caused a fire.

Nabney said the offending stemmed from Philip’s deep frustration that the concerns of unvaccinated New Zealanders weren’t “taken seriously”, by the government or mainstream media.

AFAIK you can't use any old blood for small kids. Has to be specific type, and free from some specific viruses (I used to be, and possibly still am, a pediatric donor).

But if someone(s) match the usual criteria: why the hell not. The parents are (IMO) idiots, but given the priority should be helping the kid, this seams like a problem which can be solved quite easily

Oh, yes. Two luminaires of the anti-vaxxer movement.

Ah yes, the "lawyer" who never wins and the washed-up former newsreader strike again. Conspiracy theorists unite!

Bet he's not grinning now. Of course, it doesn't make sense that he was totally innocent of all charges (according to his conspiracy theorist wife and followers), yet somehow decided to plead guilty.

What would be the chances that their lawyer is advising them on this just to get airtime for the stupid anti-vaxxer views?

From Shock: Sue Grey used her radio slots to peddle misinformation | The Spinoff

Here’s what happened just two and a half minutes into a nine-minute interview.

Dann: They trust the medical science behind those surgeons carrying out that operation yet they don’t trust those same doctors who do trust the Blood Service’s blood. Where is the logic in that?

Grey: There’s a huge amount of logic. There’s a lot of evidence, including from Medsafe, the New Zealand government’s regulator, about the harm or potential harm from the Pfizer vaccine –

Dann: No, no, no, no, no, no. I want an answer to the question that I asked. So you trust the doctors, the medical science behind the operation, those same doctors, those same doctors are not willing to see to your request. They trust the blood from the Blood Service, they accept the truth, which is there’s no risk here. Yet, you’re not willing to trust them.

Grey: That is not the truth. The truth is there’s huge amount of international research showing that there are factors in blood that can cause –

Dann: I’m sorry, Sue, but that is not the case. If we look at the Federal Drug Administration, the Canadian Blood Services Board – these have all found there is no issue here. We’ve got New Zealand’s Medsafe, we’ve got the Blood Service, the Immunisation Centre, the overwhelming scientific evidence is clear. I don’t want to have a discussion about the research because you and I are laypeople, we trust the experts.

This exchange went on for much of the nine-minute interview, with Dann often forced to interrupt Grey. Ultimately, the interview ended on this note.

Grey: There’s a lot of research that we’ve got from around the world that these doctors were not even aware of until we started providing it to them.

Dann: I’m gonna leave it there. Thank you very much for coming on. I do appreciate that. I’m sure people will have views on that interview.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that this morning. I agree with his point - while they should have pointed out that Grey is a prominent anti-vaxxer at least they didn't let her go off on a spiel for ages with misinformation, a la Counterspin or like Fox News probably would have.

I predict Grey will lose and I guess become a martyr for the anti-vaxx movement (kinda like she is already).

Better her be the martyr than some poor child who can't choose their parents.

Absolutely

Blood transfusion source must be decided only on medical grounds, otherwise you'll open the way for "I only want transfusions from white people, "I don't want any Moslem blood in my system" and other similar lunacy

That was my first thought when they said they had donors lined up, but upon thinking about it I tend agree with the others posters about how it would open them up to all sorts of unreasonable requests in the future.

What I'd say is if someone wants specific blood; then they need to pay for all the necessary sourcing, extraction, screening, and storage etc of that blood themselves. If they're willing to do that, then they can be as picky as they want.
