More on this so-called "support" person who hijacked the meeting between the parents and the doctors:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/480317/vaccinated-donor-blood-parents-meeting-with-doctors-hijacked-by-anti-vax-support-person

Just speculating here but yesterday after the judgement, Liz Gunn was quoted as saying she had been trespassed from Starship for the next 48 hours.

I think your speculation may be correct. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/130704550/liz-gunn-and-the-purebloods-how-the-baby-blood-donor-story-unfolded

Just listen to Sean Plunket (for once) and get her committed already, she is causing so much grief! ๐Ÿ˜

That's the issue with my job, I travel. So I'm kind of committed for the week. I felt off last Friday, stayed in bed, again Saturday, tested on Sunday. Had to cancel flights, rental car, four lots of accommodation. So it's the same for next week, I kind of have to decide Sunday, then it's really either go, or take another week off.

If I had a desk job, no problem, go in, don't feel great, go home. Just a quirk of my job unfortunately.

Apparently it is a VERY good idea to get as much rest as possible when you have Covid-19. Would recommend you do that if you can.

Yeah I will probably stay off the bike for the rest of the month. I've discovered the other thread which is more pertinent to individual experience, but for 10 days I have done almost zero, mostly in bed or the couch. Minimal house work and no working on projects to try and rest. I wear a Garmin watch and for about the first time it's body battery metric has got to 100% (as in well rested) each day for the first time in the two years of wearing it. But yeah, taking it easy today and will manage tomorrow's travel.

Well after dodging it for this long whilst at the gnr concert on Thursday there was a woman coughing fairly frequently sitting behind us. Sure enough felt off yesterday, tested negative then and this morning but felt a bit worse this afternoon so took another test and came back positive.

feels like a bad cold/minor flu at the present so hopefully doesn’t progress much more.

Just returned to Wellington from having neurosurgery in Christchurch. Was warned not to contract Covid immediately before or after surgery, so isolated for several weeks prior and went fully masked to airport and on aircraft. Myself, my wife and two others masked on the way down and us plus about six others on the way back. I fear you are right - Christmas celebrations are going to lead to an explosion in case numbers.

A lot of Christmas celebrations will be outdoors so maybe not too much of a problem.

I think the bigger concern is youngsters going to music festivals over the new year period, and spreading it around with those water vapour things.

We've just come back from a trip from Europe where the updated Covid vaccine (targeting BA4/5) has already been approved and in use since September. Why don't we have it yet in NZ?

The Medsafe website has been updated last in October, latest update is:

Pfizer has submitted an application for provisional approval of the BA.4/5 bivalent version of their Comirnaty Covid vaccine. However, clinical data to support this application is not expected to be available until later this year at the earliest. Medsafe is evaluating this application under priority.

Why does this take so long? I've been triple vaxxed but that's no longer enough, I want this vaccine as well.

So you're not eligible for the current 2nd booster?...

Its unlikely that the bi-variant boosters will have an expanded age/ethnicity eligibility

True, but you would expect better efficacy. I wonder how useful the current vaccine is when people I know who are up to date with all of their boosters are still getting Covid.

No, I'm not eligible for the current 2nd booster but I really want one, as when I got covid in March it took me five weeks to recover.

50/50 Ancestral/BA extra boost vaccine ?

1/ Production is probably limited and still ramping.
NZ does not exactly have the leverage that vaccine producing countries have.
There is little point approving what we can't get.

2/ We are perhaps a bit conservative on wanting to see data.
Given 'not small' antivax groundswell that gets triggered on new developments.
You look at uptake of 3rd and 4th shots not exactly a stampede, apart from aged care.
Spacing has a virtue of its own see below.

3/ Through the wonderful and complex operation of our immune system.
Further shots of original vaccine seem to promote more variation in antibodies.
So still stimulates some broadening of immunity against variants.

Then you have T-Cell responses that cover varaints, so far, by virtue of how
different this mechanism is. It responds slowly so you may get infected.
You won't mostly get serious disease, 'spin the wheel of fortune'.

   Apart from the more vulnerable.

Having an older relative in care I have to be careful not to infect them.
You see someone wearing a mask in enclosed spaces maybe they have a reason.

CDC data on the bivalent also shows you want a good spacing, you see that effectiveness is significantly greater for >= 8 month since last monovalent dose, vs 2-3months after last monovalent.
Virologists generally preferred wider spacing, but in an emergency.

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7148e1.htm#:~:text=At%202%E2%80%933%20months%20and,aged%20%E2%89%A565%20years%2C%20respectively.

""
Among persons who received ≥2 monovalent vaccine doses, rVE increased with time since the most recent monovalent vaccine dose in all age groups (Table 3). At 2–3 months and ≥8 months after receipt of the most recent monovalent dose, rVE of a bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine dose was 30% and 56% among persons aged 18–49 years, 31% and 48% among persons aged 50–64 years, and 28% and 43% among persons aged ≥65 years, respectively.

Thanks @ezbee that is very helpful!

About the second booster currently available: How is it being checked that they meet the eligibility? Can't people just walk in and say they work in health care and get the second booster?

Boland, As just a rando on the internet :-)

Haven't had my 4th , I'm allegeable but only just in age bracket,
Happy to wait and see how things go, and longer interval seems to be good.
Don't know how or if any checks are done.

Though having has a serious enough infection you have 'in a way' had a second booster.
You eventually cleared a significant infection.
I can understand if its made you gun shy though.
Theory is any subsequent infection would be much much milder.
You could ask your Doc as infection was serious can he clear a 4th for you?

From people who are real experts, and teach virology in USA, just released.

TWiV Special: Bivalent boosters with Paul Offit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v_vXMI91nw

What I got from this was...
The effect you get from the Bivalent is only a bit maybe 2% better than if that boost was Ancestral.

They were hot on quickly giving Paxlovid on any infection of elderly etc.

If you are young and otherwise healthy it's really not needed was indicated
If you have a health concern, then this seems to be a criterion.
https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-vaccine-boosters#additional

This must be real headache for Health Department, never mind something better maybe on horizon and virus has steadily drifted.

Noting I'm just another Rando On the Internet.
