Yeah, they have really low immunity from being perpetually locked down, alongside very low vaccination rates with a less effective vaccine, and in the cities they have large numbers of people living close together using public transport and it is winter. Worst possible scenario.

Oh, and an aging population too.

Yep

We saw it here, locked down for ages, then flu is a real issue as low or no immunity.

The plan was get vaccinated as we cannot lock down forever, so now we have growing cases, and unless we lockdown for 6 months and lock the border, you cannot evade it. So you get as protected as you and so when you do get it, its ok. Best you can do.

Aging population in China is no issue except that they are not well vaccinated, which is bizarre given the hard line they took.

'Disclosure" My wife is Chinese and her and many are dumbfounded. Case in point, how can a dictatorship cave in? Nationwide protests. Now, the excessive lockdowns and the less than stellar vaccinations will bite. For the rest of us, more Covid related supply issues.

They do.

The top people got Pfizer, the rest got Sinovac. Not saying that Sinovac is poor, but you have to ask

What I don't understand is why millions of dollars of vaccine in NZ is being left to expire? Rather than make more people eligable for a third booster. Very few people are actually eligible now, and those that are, many have chosen not to get it. It seems crazy and a waste. Obviously it doesn't appear to be as effective as the new bivalent boosters , but NZ is behind other countries with these, and many people seem to be getting it when they go to oz..

This is one of the problems with high density living which NZ is also moving to.

Probably its a case that you have been supported but the masses dont want support, they want freedom, and as as we are well vaccinated the only option is to move on. We the individuals need to take some control.

China Restrictions vs No restrictions, somewhere in the middle

Friend of ours took the 12 year old son to Fiji for 3 days, they both came back with it. Gave it to the ex husband, that's how it is now.

Agree, but that's a slow moving train. Worthy of consideration for the next pandemic, which will happen, sooner than later

The second booster is now available to people over 50. Were you aware of that?

The median age in NZ was 37.9 in 2021. So most people are not eligible.

The criteria are wider than that:

a second booster is available for:

  • Māori and Pacific peoples aged 40 years and over
  • all people aged 50 years and over
  • health, aged care and disability workers aged 30 years and over.

In addition there is availability for

  • residents of aged care and disability care facilities
  • severely immunocompromised people who received a three-dose primary course and a fourth dose as a first booster (noting this would be a fifth dose for these people)
  • people aged 16 years and over who have a medical condition that increases the risk of severe breakthrough COVID-19 illness and
  • people aged 16 years and over who live with disability with significant or complex health needs or multiple comorbidities.

I was replying to the comment that very few people are eligible to a second booster.

Last dose Jan 11. Still avoided so far, And eligibility still a while off at this rate.

So yeah.. figure there's a crapload more that have similar waned coverage.

Radio recently said our wastage levels are on the up because the vials are open and very few a day showing up at some locations (2100/day national with 65k/month?)
Just a shame gaps can't be filled by those willing.

Then there's this... https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2022/12/coronavirus-600-000-covid-19-vaccine-doses-expire-within-weeks.html

Yes, my mistake, I meant the 2nd booster, not the 3rd. The eligibility requirements mean that like many, I am not eligible even though it is well over 6 months since the 1st booster. They could just drop the eligibility to everyone 40 and up, to prevent a lot of those vaccines going to waste. They are better in people's arms than in ending up being wasted.

Biggest question on the booster is when are we getting the bivalent booster - waste of time (mostly) giving people a Delta booster. Labour were full on to the point of ridiculousness and now they’re “meh, good luck everyone, we’ve wasted all the money on PR doctors and analysts so it’s up to you guys now”.
