BBC News - Coronavirus: US Senators face calls to resign over ‘insider trading’

today

Two US Republican Senators are facing calls to resign over allegations they used insider knowledge to sell shares before prices fell due to coronavirus fears.

Richard Burr is chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee while Kelly Loeffler * sits on the Senate Health Committee.

Richard Burr reportedly dumped up to $1.7m (£1.45m) of stocks last month.

Kelly Loeffler * is reported to have sold holdings worth up to $3m in a series of transactions beginning the same day as a Senate briefing on the virus.

Both Senators have denied any impropriety.

Under US law, it is illegal for members of Congress to trade based on non-public information gathered during their official duties. ...

EDIT

*  Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) is super-wealthy - her husband is president of The New York Stock Exchange.

Countdown online shopping leaves them at the door then texts that they are there.

Has anyone ordered frozen vegetables through Countdown online shopping, I guess the delivery people must have ways of ensuring the goods remain frozen during transit? It would pay to pick up your shopping promptly if it includes frozen goods!

Been using Countdown Online since when it started 20 plus years ago. They are well set up for delivery of frozen/refrigerated items.

The delivery trucks have a seperate chilled/refrigerated section where they keep those bags until they get to your home.

Handle9: The shutdown of travel is hitting people really hard now. The UAE is not letting any foreign nationals in anymore, even if you have a residency visa.

In the NZ UAE WhatsApp group there are multiple families where husband's/wives are separated from their families. One ladies husband is stuck in Moscow while another is here with her husband unable to return.

Sidestep:

There must be a lot of people for whom - apart from the health risks - this is going to be a disaster, financially.

My in-laws are both travel agents (independent). This has destroyed their livelihood. They are still working insane hours to try and process rebookings and cancellations, but it has started to sink in that they are unlikely to have any income from their business for the next few months (or longer).

If governments are generous in providing rescue home type flights it will help airlines in months/years to come.  People will be very wary of international travel for quite a while.

PM is to give a statement on "next steps" to fight Covid 19 at midday.

Note that MoH have not updated their "current cases" page "travel details" for 5 out of yesterday's 11 confirmed cases.  It's surely not that hard to ask simple questions and get simple answers ("have you been overseas recently?" and "where did you go") so if the answer is no then they'll be trying to tie these cases to contact with people who have - and that's not so easy.

I suspect we'll be in the next phase of containment efforts by this afternoon.  It was inevitable.

Stuff is saying that Bloomfield will deliver his daily update at 11 am. I guess it is going to be a very interesting day.

Hopefully, they will start testing and quarantining anyone coming in from overseas, letting them go home only when negative test results are received.

CT likely. Could also be an Air New Zealand combined effort to mass transport many Kiwi's home.

If it is CT, then they won't know who it was caught from. If its 1 example, that location might be severely locked down, and mass tests. Although probably better to mass lockdown and wait for symptoms, then test and put together a geographical travel breakdown of the infected.

Post the announcement on Newshub they went to a commentator to discuss it. She said when she was driving home last night, through Ponsonby, that bars and restaurants were packed. She says we arent taking it seriously, the public need to play ball.
