So no lock down just yet. That doesn't occur till alert level 4. We are at level 2.

I understand certain regions may change their level depending on if there has been CT. Eg. If the wairarapa case can't be linked then wherever they have been potentially could be affected from what I understand. But they may have caught it getting a person who should have self isolated but didn't.

I wonder if level 4 areas will mean that people in that area will get blanket tested?

I think the statement about people over 70 years of age was referring to people who are immuno-compromised or have certain pre-existing conditions. If you're a fit and healthy over 70-year old, I don't think you need to stay home.

This morning at NW Wigram there were over 20 people waiting for them to open at 0730.

Most were Countdown customers (I asked a few of the ones I have never seen before), who due to Coundown changing to opening at 0900hrs thought they would "strip" NW of what they could before going to Countdown later and doing the same again!

Stupidity ruled!

53 cases is about what Queensland had around 16 th or 17 March. The population of NZ and Queensland is quite similar in size. Before my self aborted flight to Brisbane I was keeping a close watch on cases & on 14 March Queensland had either 35 or 38 cases. Yesterday Queensland had 184 confirmed cases.

No! This affects people like me. I live far from town, am over 70, don't have young people to do my shopping for me so I limit my exposure by doing shopping infrequently and stocking up when I do. One-size-fits-all solutions always shut some people out.

I am in the same situation. But it doesn't mean you can't still buy the goods, it is just that they ask you your situation. Hopefully people are honest. Eg if you show then your address and that you live a big distance away that would be enough. It also needs the supermarket staff to show common sense.

Countdown are restricting people to no more than 2 similar products which affects everyone and will mean than some people won't be able to shop normally anyway if they normally do big monthly shops.

New Zealand has been moved up to COVID-19 Alert Level 2, Reduce Contact, in an escalation of efforts to reduce the spread of the virus in New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today.

“Protecting New Zealanders from the virus is our number one objective, and we must take decisive action to prevent the worst occurring here,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“New Zealand is fighting an unprecedented global pandemic. We must fight by going hard and going early with new measures to slow the transmission of the virus.

“Today I am announcing a four stage COVID-19 Alert Level system, with escalating restrictions on human contact, travel and business operations.

“The international situation is changing rapidly and we need to clearly sign-post the changes New Zealanders will be asked to make as we step up our efforts to limit the spread of the virus. The alert system means people can see and plan for the kinds of restrictions we may be required to put in place, which may be required rapidly.

“Based on expert medical advice and international evidence I am moving New Zealand to Alert Level 2, Reduce Contact. This will have a significant disruption on how we go about our daily lives, but it is necessary to protect lives.

“People over 70 years of age, or people who are immunocompromised or have certain pre-existing conditions, need to stay at home as much as they can from now on.

“I’m asking everyone to support our older New Zealanders by doing things like keeping in contact with them and dropping off food or other supplies.

“I am also asking businesses and workplaces to play their part. Many workplaces already have plans for staff to work from home or to distance themselves in the workplace. We are now asking you to put those plans in place.

“Health and emergency professionals, transport and delivery staff, supermarket and food production workers, and other essential people will be continuing on at their place of work at this alert level.

“It’s also important to note that at every alert level supermarkets around New Zealand will remain open.

“We are also asking New Zealanders to limit all non-essential domestic travel. We need people to significantly reduce the number of interactions they have at this time and that includes visiting people in different parts of the country for non-essential reasons.

“These measures are being taken in the national interest. We know people, business, and sports events will be impacted, but these are short-term disruptions for the overall health of our people and country.

“I know many New Zealanders are anxious. The alert system is designed to offer certainty around future action and the ability for people to plan and prepare for any future eventuality. Please be strong, be kind, and unite against COVID-19,” Jacinda Ardern said.

Yes I think it refers to everyone over 70, as age has been shown to be a factor in the risk of complications. But I stand to be corrected

Thanks, yes, that's what I said earlier, so I don't think fit and healthy over 70-year olds need to stay home at this stage.

Sure, we now have 53 cases (about 11 per million of our population), but to put this into context, compare this with the UK which has 3,983 cases, which represents about 59 per million of their population.

Obviously NZ cases are on the move, but I don't think this should put us into panic mode, it is still a small number compared to the world's total of 275 thousand cases.

Why are bars/cafes/restaurants still open at this point? We are looking at 1000 cases in about 14 days. At which point our healthcare system is overloaded.
