k14: Anyone have the definition of "unnecessary domestic travel"? Can we travel within our own region? Go to a cafe for lunch/dinner, drive 30 mins to the nearest town to take the kids to the playground? Understand not traveling from say Chch to Auckland for the weekend but where to draw the line?

IS your travel NECESSARY or not?

Its really all about thinking of your community now, not just yourself.

Nobody getting off an overseas flight should be going anywhere but straight into strict enforced quarantine for 14 days and not released until they test negative.

We do it with animals. Why should we treat our human population with less attention to risk than that?

I do wonder why we aren't blanket testing everyone coming into NZ, as that is coming into NZ from ? Or is it a case that their are too many incoming people for the number of people testing? If so, IMO they should all go into quarantine.

Also how accurate are the tests?. Apparently the cruise ship that was in Wellington last weekend had some sick people onboard, and they were tested for this, but they returned negative results when in Wellington. But when that ship returned to Australia, some on board tested positive for it. Where they the same people? The first NZ case apparently had symptoms, but tested negative on two of the tests, and it wasn't until the third test did they test positive. So many questions.

I am currently in the Wairarapa where there is a possible CT case, so I wouldn't be surprised if the area has it's level raised to a 3. Not much information about the case. There is a wedding occurring just down the road as well.

mattwnz: What I would like to see supermarkets do is pull aside those people whose trolleys are full of goods where it doesn't look like they are shopping normally. Psychologically if people know they may be pulled aside it may mean others think again about how they are shopping.

They somewhat tried this in the UK, but staff were being abused. So you'd really need someone of authority at each supermarket to do it, is that the best use of police/army time?

As for Bars being open, that will happen until the government forces them to close as has just happened in the UK today. They are stuck in between a rock and a hard place, can't afford to close and put people out of work, putting people at risk if they stay open.

To be honest, I think that is the next step. Some people have behaved badly, and it has put  other people at risk of not being able to get supplies they need.

I also can't believe they haven't introduced a dedicated hour for elderly to get supplies . At the MOH meeting yesterday (feels like a week ago) the Foodstuufs rep said they had been in discussions with Greypower over it, and greypower apparently weren't keen on older people being restricted to buying at certain times. But that isn't what they should be doing. Older people must still be able to shop at anytime, but they ALSO get a dedicated hour to shop at the beginning of the day.

Post the announcement on Newshub they went to a commentator to discuss it. She said when she was driving home last night, through Ponsonby, that bars and restaurants were packed. She says we arent taking it seriously, the public need to play ball. 

They also did the dedicated elderly hour in the UK, that too did not turn out like you would hope. It was ridiculously busy and until/if the transportation network can catch up with demand, they won't have the stock anyway.

dogstar001: Why are bars/cafes/restaurants still open at this point? We are looking at 1000 cases in about 14 days. At which point our healthcare system is overloaded.

 

I want to see what happens when incoming flights drop off. Because of those we are importing cases daily. They will turn up as cases in a few days to a week. IMHO, those new cases that are travel related arent NZ's current internal Covid-19 situation.  

 

The whole thing has been caused by people travelling into NZ with virus. If we knew what we do today, a couple of months ago, I suspect we would have blocked incoming travel straight away as a proactive move to act early. But then they would have had so many people complaining etc. Next time it occurs, I would hope things will be done differently. I almost think that when this is all over, that future travel from some higher risk countries, may involve forms of quarantine as standard.

@frednz. One last time: ALL over 70s should stay at home.

 

Please stop this. Someone close to me is over 70, has cancer, has to frequently travel to the hospital for essential treatments. There are good reasons why some people over 70 can't stay home.
