What do you say to Americans who are scared?

"I say You're a terrible reporter, that's what I say" - Trump

Says it all.

That was a cringe read

Batman:

dumb question with the kiwisaver business - if you keep the funds as they are, they will be reinvested into the black hole sharemarket correct? so move all existing and future funds?

IANAFA

I would go hard on an aggressive setting. If you dont need it tomorrow, your fund will buy shares, at cheap prices. Once this is all done, your shares bought at cheap prices, and your shares that slumped will end up at 2021 or 2022 highs. As is always the case

Thats a serious answer. But another is if you change to a conservative find you crystallise your losses, which are only paper losses. Then they wont recover once normality is eventually resumed.

There was confusion earlier on with this, because Stuff incorrectly posted on their website in their red alert box,  that all people aged 70 and over to be 'self isolated'.
I did take a screenshot to be sure that is what they had said. But they later removed it. When infact people age 70+ have just been told they should stay at home.

Yep, it can be a minefield. I dont believe anyone, its such a changefest and a media fest. I cycle between Stuff, News hub and tidy up with GZ, to do the filtering.

kingdragonfly: How Hospitals Could Decide Who Gets a Ventilator During the Coronavirus Pandemic

VICE News

VICE News spoke with Dr. Tia Powell, a physician and bioethicist who helped write the guidelines.

or hook up one ventilator to multiple patients...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uClq978oohY

Thanks for the link, I'm gonna pass it to the relevant persons in the hospitals.

Unfortunately the patients need to be paralyzed - but who cares when 'Ultima-Ratio' takes place.

Simon Moutter posted on twitter yesterday that a business he works with applied to get the emergency wage support grant on Tuesday and had the money by Friday. It would appear that the system is working as it was hoped.

I've heard that from others. There has been challenges (thats for the "other" thread) but the planning and logistics I find has been excellent.

- Analysis of Hamburg data shows that lock down take it's first effect. Infection rate (not the infections itself) slows down for the moment gaining even more time.

What is the lockdown up your way? Italy had the initial lockdown, but that was go to work, go to shops all shops shut at 6pm, seemed pretty loose to me

Allowed: go to FOOD!-shops (open on sunday as well now), go to doctor on permission prior request, go to work for essential services only (Public services, Police, Fire Dept., Medicians, and certain requested businesses, logistics, transportation, food supply and bring services, food drive-ins, fuel stopps ...)

Mandatory to have this freedom: People are required to keep a distance to others of at least 1.5m (except persons who belong to the same household) Jogging outdoors with safe distance is allowed, walking outside as well - remember with distance and respect to others).

Anything else concentrating more than 6 people on a same spot/room/office OR to come closer than 1.5m is forbidden (exception: when more persons belong to the same household).

GeekGuy:

Staff member only got rid of them when they threatened to phone the police on them for not self isolating for 2 weeks.

I think that is the wrong attitude. Don't threaten to call the cops to get rid of them. DO call the cops to get them off the street.

This is a public health emergency, and we need people to take appropriate precautions. People flouting the law put us all at risk.

No hand sanitiser at my local supermarket today. So I purchased a bottle of Listerine with alcohol in it. That should be effective I think.

I don't understand the difficulty with alcohol for homemade sanitizer. Just use meths... it is 100% alcohol. Some is methanol (can't remember the percentage... 20% ???) but that's irrelevant, because methanol is just as good as ethanol as an antiviral.

Or have hoarders bought out all of Bunnings and Mitre10 and all the supermarkets?

Methanol is absorbed through the skin and is poisonous.  I wouldn't be using methylated spirits except for surfaces, and paint I wanted to strip off.

Alcohol at concentrations less than 60% is ineffective as a viricide.

So the Iwi using Vodka are misleading their folk as vodka is 40%, and add aloe vera it's even less.

There's going to be a lot of quackery going round over what's best. Neighbour was going to brew their own sanitiser using tea tree oil, wasn't sure how to tell them that the most effective ingredient for Covid-19 in that was probably the water.

Soap + water for at least 20s folks, how hard is that to understand.

like this article, i was told japan don't test people, and we all expected Japan to have massive mortality,

but it was one of the first countries infected after china and nothing seems to have happened. no panic, no airport checks, no nothing checks, no people walking around in hazmat suits, no shutdown, no physical distancing, life just went on as normal. Now they are prepared to win all, each and every medal in the Olympics.

maybe we need to learn something from them.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/03/20/national/coronavirus-explosion-expected-japan/#.XnXKhKgzaUk

“Italy’s mortality rate is almost triple Japan’s,” said Yoko Tsukamoto, a professor of infection control at the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido. “Part of the reason is if you get tested, you get quarantined, so it means that they don’t have enough beds for relatively nonsevere patients.”

A cheerier story I heard on RNZ yesterday was about a US based gin distilling business that has given up making gin & is making hand sanitizer!  And even better the company is giving it away to the local community and charitable organisations.

Is the wage subsidy treated as non-taxable income to a business? (and payments to employees as a result of subsidy treated as normal salary/wages for tax purposes?)
