Batman:

like this article, i was told japan don't test people, and we all expected Japan to have massive mortality,

but it was one of the first countries infected after china and nothing seems to have happened. no panic, no airport checks, no nothing checks, no people walking around in hazmat suits, no shutdown, no physical distancing, life just went on as normal.

maybe we need to learn something from them.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/03/20/national/coronavirus-explosion-expected-japan/#.XnXKhKgzaUk

“Italy’s mortality rate is almost triple Japan’s,” said Yoko Tsukamoto, a professor of infection control at the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido. “Part of the reason is if you get tested, you get quarantined, so it means that they don’t have enough beds for relatively nonsevere patients.”

Everyone there is wearing a mask.

How could we even start to copy them when no one except those of Asian descent are wearing them?

Also, they hospitalised everyone with a positive test ( my cousins were on that boat and were only just released from hospital even though they weren't ill) yet we are allowing people to self isolate when any one of those people  could be slipping out at any time ?

A cheerier story I heard on RNZ yesterday was about a US based gin distilling business that has given up making gin & is making hand sanitizer!  And even better the company is giving it away to the local community and charitable organisations.

The same was last week here with Beiersdorf (you might know "Nivea"). They are producing 500 tons of desinfectant now.

My wife says they are hiding all the dead bodies because they want the Olympics to go ahead.

Either way, something doesn't addt up.

There is food alcohol available at 70% proof. Most famously is "Everclear" even some absinthe, some vodkas, and some whiskeys. I understand they can only be used in food preparation, so not sold in liquor stores.

It ain't cheap, but here's an origanically made 90% bottle at $153 per 750ml bottle.

https://spirits.net.nz/product/high-strength-food-grade-alcohol-for-your-home-made-limoncello-750ml/

Rubbing alcohol / "Surgical spirit" ingredients vary by region, but in the UK it is a 95% methylated spirit. The methanol is intentionally added, to keep people from drinking it.

Skin irritation is a definite possible, so if you react to rubbing alcohol, stop using it. I'd recommend just spritzing your hands, and wiping it off.

In a bit of coincidence, methanol poison testing by absorption through the skin was done by animal testing in New Zealand.

It's not pretty, but they tested animals with a minimum of 4 hours directly to the eye.

http://www.inchem.org/documents/ehc/ehc/ehc196.htm#SectionNumber:7.4

Methanol can be absorbed through the skin, but there are very few reported cases of this.

Obviously drinking methanol is usually how vast majority of people are poisoned. Methanol vapours also possible, usually during prolonged cleaning. Again poisoning via skin contact is unusual, but not impossible.

If you're just spritzing your hands, and keeping your hands away from your face, you should be OK.

Due to its vapours, and being extremely flammable, I'd keep it in a seal container like a spray bottle.

No hand sanitiser at my local supermarket today. So I purchased a bottle of Listerine with alcohol in it. That should be effective I think.

It makes me glad I have a still. Six kilos of sugar and some yeast for ample amounts of 90%+ ethanol. Of course, it's also good for making Limoncello, but that is purely a side effect...

I bought quite a few litres of 99% ethanol, and will make up hand sanitizers by adding glycerine to make a 70% solution.

The WHO recipe also calls for H2O2 to kill bacterial spores but I only want it to use as a hand virucide.

Making a still is pretty straightforward, but more likely to kill you than the coronavirus.

You can search Youtube for "moonshine first run". The "first run" / "cleaning run" / the "foreshot" / the "heads" contains undesirable compounds, such as methanol and acetone.

You obviously can't sell the alcohol

Setting your shed on fire or death by explosion are real possibilities.

The smaller the still, the higher the chance of poisoning, because a higher proportion of the "run" is methanol / acetone which must be discarded; the still must reach the correct temperature before ethanol is produced.

I'm sure nobody's going to try it, but making alcohol from tubers, like vodka, is more dangerous than alcohol from corn / grains. Potatoes tend toward make more methanol, so more care is needed.

Best to leave it to the licenced tax paying professionals.

There's no way in hell I'd try making a still. I'm fully aware of my capabilities as to making this sort of equipment, which is why I've left it to people who know what they're doing.

I bought a Turbo 500 (a decent beginner's reflux still, sold at many home brew shops) a few years ago, and have had zero problems over a couple of dozen batches. I usually take the first 100 or so ml of each batch off and keep it for cleaning my glasses, computer parts, etc.

Making various liqueurs has turned into quite the rewarding hobby.

With all these comments about meth's, Please note that NZ meths has not contained methanol for over a decade:

https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/SC0701/S00009/erma-new-zealand-makes-meths-safer.htm

It now gets denatured by other stuff, generally disclosed on the SDS. In the below example it is Denatonium benzoate at 0.00156% concentration.

Did anybody see the Auckland testing clinic's on the evening news today. Seemed very worrying.

The staff were wearing surgical masks & safety glasses, rather than the P2 masks & googles as per best practice for medical staff.

These are the people that are looking down the throat's of suspected covid-19 cases, to take swab's, so the exposure / risk is extreme.

Also there seemed to be excessive number of staff, milling around in close quarters, further increasing the risk.

We have many months of learning's from other countries about the best way to manage COVID-19, it is disappointing we are not taking advantage of this.

Seriously our medical staff are super important, we should be giving them the best protection we can, and minimizing their exposure to risk.

yep: Meths here is just ethanol plus some bitrex or vomitex to prevent winos drinking it. Anyone talking about Methanol is clueless. However, there is apparently a difference between food grade ethanol (ok for skin?) and industrial grade (maybe ok - YMMV?). Personally I suspect they are the same, but I got no facts.

There is a NZ product called ZOONO that is very good. It forms a barrier on the skin that lasts all day (allegedly). It's expensive but my wife was able to order it a few days ago.

I was watching the BBC news last night, and it gave in insight of what NZ maybe facing in a few weeks / months , depending on whether we get any widespread  CT occurring. They did a story on a local medical practice. They were saying that their staff dealing with suspected COVID cases all expected to get it. They had split the practice into two levels, but they all entered via the same door. The bottom level was for suspected COVID cases, and the upper level was for normal visits. The  doctors on upper level would take the place of doctors on the lower level that got sick.. They were critical of the masks they were supplied with and just a plastic bib, it all looked poor, and just normal stuff you see in a doctors office. They had one suspected case visit, and he had to pass a mask out to her through the window. The doctor referred her to the hospital. But later they said that she was sent home from the hospital to recover and was not tested because he hadn't had contact from anyone from overseas, so didn't fit the criteria.

Our local medical centre, from Monday, will not allow anyone into the building unless you have an appointment.

If one member of staff gets Covid 19, they ALL have to self isolate for 14 days before they can work again. So let's those of us that need them, hope they do not get it!

Just had a good Facebook post read out me (I don’t do Facebook).

It suggested that there be no limit on the number of condoms people can buy because the type of people panic buying should be prevented from breeding.

My wife and I have decided that now is as good as time as any to try for another kid (the last one took quite a while).

BBC News - Coronavirus: US Senators face calls to resign over ‘insider trading’

today

Two US Republican Senators are facing calls to resign over allegations they used insider knowledge to sell shares before prices fell due to coronavirus fears.

Richard Burr is chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee while Kelly Loeffler * sits on the Senate Health Committee.

Richard Burr reportedly dumped up to $1.7m (£1.45m) of stocks last month.

Kelly Loeffler * is reported to have sold holdings worth up to $3m in a series of transactions beginning the same day as a Senate briefing on the virus.

Both Senators have denied any impropriety.

Under US law, it is illegal for members of Congress to trade based on non-public information gathered during their official duties. ...

EDIT

*  Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) is super-wealthy - her husband is president of The New York Stock Exchange.

Matt Levine wrote:

Similarly Loeffler sold as much as $3.1 million worth of stock (the reports give only broad ranges for each asset), which sounds like a lot for a senator, until you remember that “the Atlanta businesswoman, whose husband is the chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, is worth an estimated $500 million.” So she learned devastating news about a global pandemic and rushed out to sell … stock worth 0.6% of her net worth? Really? At that level of wealth that’s just a minor portfolio tweak; if she was going to insider trade, surely she’d have gone bigger. Also frankly at that level of wealth—and having a stock exchange CEO in the family—it seems unlikely she’s making such tiny trading decisions at all. As, in fact,  she said:

Loeffler responded on Twitter by calling criticism of her stock sales “a ridiculous and baseless attack.” The tweet said “I do not make investment decisions for my portfolio. Investment decisions are made by multiple third-party advisors without my or my husband’s knowledge or involvement.”

That is a much better response than “no I sold before the stocks went down”! Similarly:

One of Loeffler’s two purchases was stock worth between $100,000 and $250,000 in Citrix, a technology company that offers teleworking software and which has seen a small bump in its stock price since Loeffler bought in as a result of coronavirus-induced market turmoil.

Look, first, Citrix Systems Inc. is a decent way to bet on everyone working from home for months, though it is not necessarily the most obvious way; it’s up about 2.7% since Loeffler bought it, while Zoom Video Communications Inc. is up about 36% in that period. 2  But, second, she put less than 0.05% of her wealth behind that bet! Why bother? What can Loeffler buy with the $6,700 she has made on her Citrix trade 3  that she couldn’t have bought with the $500 million she had already
