boosacnoodle:

Technofreak: Quick to to Australia and back. Pre departure covid test in New Zealand $300 and results took about 12 hours which I was told was pretty quick. Pre departure covid test in Oz, $83 NZD results in 30 minutes. Makes you wonder.

My GP is $180~. $300 seems a rip.

One of my family has an upcoming proceedure, although is fully vaccinated the specialist still demands a private Covid-19 test at $220.00 48 hours beforehand. If unvaccinated and travelling it would be free

Still had a little light relief today. Our Vet requires you to be fully vaccinated to enter the clinic, so in I go with our feline, and immediately put two documents on the table -"Here is my vaccination certificate, and here is the cats"

I'm eligible for a booster shot from tomorrow, but am wondering about whether now is the best time to get this or to hold off a bit, noting NZ doesn't yet have omicron and we're just coming into summer.

I understand the apparent effectiveness of the booster shot with omicron but also want to maximise its potential effectiveness, noting if I have it now and the next (inevitable?) booster is in six months' time, that'll be in the middle of winter (by which point there's a good chance its efficacy is significantly reduced) plus (also inevitably) omicron will be well and truly here... (Unless we also reduce the timeframes between boosters, and indeed further boosters are recommended.)

What's the general advice re timing of boosters in relation to the specifics of NZ?

From what I understand, Pfizer has said that 3 shots of Pfizer is as effective against omicron as 2 shots of Pfizer was against Delta.

If you are 6+ months from your second vaccination, I'd get one now, as it takes ~2 weeks to become fully effective anyway.

You are more likely to be exposed to Delta (though the risk is still relatively low given our case numbers) and ideally want to be as protected as you can be against the current threat. More boosters will be released, likely tweaked etc.

I had mine the day it was available.

I'm eligible for my booster next week - Sunday 19th to be exact - and I'll be a walk-in at the local vax clinic on Sunday or Monday.
It's proven effective, it's available, it's safe and it's free: what's not to like? 😉

If I need a "booster booster" in June or July, well "que sera sera" as Doris Day used to sing

Presumably that private service practically guarantees the result 48 hours prior to the appointment. The roll-up testing center services are not in any position to provide this kind of timeframe, even if it's faster than 48 most of the time. Flight requirement is 72 hours I think.

I've done a roll up test twice in the past two weeks and had my results in about 24 hours.

If you really want a peek behind the curtain of the madness that is the antivaxx group in NZ there will be a link just below.

But be aware, the site if choc full of nuts, claiming all sorts of human rights abuses and proclaiming Sue Grey has the support of 91% of New Zealanders.

Its full crackpot.

The vaccine takes a few weeks to work. A booster now will see maximum immunity after the New Year and through January / February. If Omicron leaks out of MIQ, you're best placed to avoid it.

But at this point I'm assuming the vaccines offer limited protection from infection by delta or omicron, but do offer the chance of a less serious illness if infected.

Meanwhile, we're pretty much in self-imposed Level 3 because we've seen how careless many / most people are........no mask or mask on wrong, no distancing, or flat out anti-vaxxer.

Best protection is prevention.

Well, I can report that I had my booster shot on Friday - evidence that I do actually take the comments on GZ seriously!

I don't actually mind those sites, they're so obviously nuts that no-one except similar crackpots will ever take them seriously, it's like the guy on the street corner on Friday evening with underpants on his head yelling about the aliens. They also act as a useful tarpit for said crackpots so they can do less damage elsewhere.

What's more worrying is legit-seeming sites seeded with subtle misinformation that catch people without them even being aware of it. Outside of Covid gunk, Russia Today is a good example of how to do this in general. They've really taken to heart Goebbels' broadcast propaganda mix of light entertainment, genuine news and information, and subtle disinformation and demoralising stories presented as news and information and positive stories. It's very subtle and very clever, unlike the US-style hit-you-in-the-face-with-a-baseball-bat propaganda.

Now that the booster wait has been reduced to 4 months, my wife and I have brought our booster shots forward to mid January. We both had our second shots in August, so are over 4 months now.

Went shopping today to stock up before Omicron panic hits. Everything pretty normal in town except limited choice of cat food at Countdown (not at New World). Lots of toilet paper! Pleasant vibe, no-one acting anxious or hurried. Glad I got in when I did, though. Will be interesting to see what happens after New Year.

Rebooked our booster shots last week and had them this afternoon at Orchard Road, Chch.

There was a long queue of well over fifty walk ins waiting in the hot sun. Showed our booking and were sent to the front of the line. Place was chock full, but only seemed that about 5 of the 15 booths were operating. Noticed that one of the empty booths was an Astrazeneca one.

In and out in 45 minutes, so very glad we booked.

It’s been an interesting week. We had one of us in the house get Covid this week.

They were double vaccinated with Pfizer around 5 months ago. They were feeling a bit dusty on Monday so got tested and were positive. They had a couple of rough days but started feeling much better on Wednesday night and by today completely back to normal. The rest of us are fine and nothing further to report.

I guess it was Omicron, given the rapid recovery and mild symptoms. I spent a significant amount of time in close contact and had no effects, including testing negative. I did get my booster 6 weeks ago.

I hope things go well for the person in recovery and others aren't affected.
