The case in Carterton still not ruling out CT. We are in Upper Hutt, about 45 minutes away. A lot of people travel back and forth over the Rimutaka hill, and on the train.

It's a little close for comfort.

Can we say Olympics?  I don't know what Japan are doing but if they're aren't containing and isolating, then they're just delaying the epidemic through their population.

Their case number is 1000 I think now.

They often wear masks in public and it is a clean country so maybe that helps.

If it is CT then isn't it likely they got it from someone in Wellington especially considering their job which likely involves dealing with people and possibly lots of handshakes

BusinessInsider.com.au ISIS is urging its fighters to avoid Europe because of the coronavirus pandemic

...The latest edition of the terror group’s newsletter, Al-Naba, calls on its fighters to “stay away from the land of the epidemic,” Homeland Security Today recently reported.

“The healthy should not enter the land of the epidemic and the afflicted should not exit from it,” the editors of the newsletter stated.

The newsletter also offered militants advice on how to avoid getting infected, including “cover the mouth when yawning and sneezing” and “wash the hands before dipping them into vessels.” There’s a full-page graphic on the back cover that cites Islamic texts for “directives to deal with epidemics.”

The terror group’s newsletter has been following the novel coronavirus pandemic closely, reporting on the spread of the virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, since the beginning of 2020.

In a February edition, ISIS said “many Muslims rushed to confirm that this epidemic is a punishment from God Almighty” for China’s oppression of the Muslim Uighur minority, but went on to warn that the “the world is interconnected” and transportation “would facilitate the transfer of diseases and epidemics.”...

To be fair, it was a council worker - highly unlikely they were on the train, and we all know they are going to be well closed before the train gets in each night. You'd need someone to have made it to council during their opening hours (10am til 2pm, and closed for the lunch hour?), have spent long enough there to actually catch it (although with the speed of service, that could be possible), and then take it home, and finally give it to someone in their household who catches the train.

Plus, we all know the weird "train people" think that a particular seat is their own, so there's a good chance the contact tracing should be easy enough - you've got those weirdos is that carriage, these weirdos in this carriage, and those who aren't cool enough for a seat standing between carriages.

Unless of course, the conductor has it...

You mean flattening the curve si health services are not overwhelmed? Isn't that also NZs approach rather than going all out to stamp it out?

kingdragonfly: NZ Herald: Coronavirus: North Island iwi warned against blocking major state highway

Describing SH35 as a major state highway as clickbait. It's the road following the Motu River, aka the Motu Track. A windy narrow little used back road that no one would notice if it was closed if it wasn't reported in the Herald.

Again I'm not a numbers guy so this might be off by a factor or two

4.8M x 60% (herd immunity) = 2.88M infected

20% of 2.88M = 576,000 in ICU or HDU

Mortality of 2.5% that's 120,000 dead

and 57600 - 120,000 = 456,000 needing rehab.

Now, that's with a R0 of 2.5.  We can drop that by isolating.

So flattening the curve is a disaster.  We need to eradicate this disease.

gchiu:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120475339/coronavirus-ministry-of-health-to-provide-update-on-new-cases-in-new-zealand

14 more cases, 11 travel related.

All travel related. 1 of the 3 is a close contact of an existing case, the other 2 were at a conference that included foreign delegates, and where there was infection, so 2 Kiwis got infected.
