Lastman:

Stuff continue to “stuff” this up, “People over 70 years of age and who have pre-excisting health conditions are advised to stay home.”

the word “or” would be much better to be absolutely clear.

Agreed, the Stuff article you refer to is here:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120475339/coronavirus-ministry-of-health-to-provide-update-on-new-cases-in-new-zealand

From the above:

For now, the Covid-19 threat level remains at 2, the level where people are asked to reduce contact with others. People over 70 years of age and who have pre-excisting health conditions are advised to stay home.

Bloomfield delivered a warning to those over 70: "We know many of you are fit and healthy and living active lives but the older we are the less our immune system is able to fight off this virus.

"We have seen from overseas older people are at more risk of serious complications so we are strongly encourage you - in fact urging you - to be aware of the need to stay at home," he said.

Well, there you are, I got a "yellow card" (or was it a red one) from this forum yesterday having read and "misinterpreted" a sentence like that in the news, i.e. "People over 70 years of age and who have pre-excisting health conditions are advised to stay home."

Of course, as was "kindly" pointed out to me, all people over 70 years of age are advised to stay at home! But, Bloomfield at least acknowledged my point that many people over 70 are fit and healthy, but he no doubt correctly says that "the older we are the less our immune system is able to fight off this virus". However, there are ways of boosting your immune system if you are elderly.

The other thing I'd point out is that patients who have AS ( radiographic axial spondyloarthropathy) often have significant loss of respiratory reserve due to restrictive lung disease.  So, that is a significant factor. So, you might as well stay on your biologics and just practice absolute isolation until we see if community transmission can be halted.

If Covid-19 becomes endemic then isolation could be permanent.

Maybe not permanent - but just for now, then if a short-acting vaccine is available, susceptible people should get regular boosters.

well, if it becomes endemic it may become seasonal so you only isolate seasonally.

but maybe we'lll get a vaccine in a year or two, and then vaccinate twice yearly.  Who knows?  I presume that you'll need to have antibody levels measured.  But then what to do about mutations in the virus.  Maybe it's time to grab a lifestyle block from an estate sale.

Well that's a very depressing prospect. I could not live with that.

I am going to exit this thread.

In NY liquor stores are deemed essential

probably for marijuana outlets as well.

I guess that means the gangs can keep tinny houses open.

I suggest you don't.

An effective treatment is possible -and faster than a vaccine (I hope)

So hang in there.

Does Australia have a breakdown for Vic and NSW, between imported traveller cases and CT, for the cases they have ?

For those worried about endemic sars-cov-19 and permanent isolation, I think the solution might be to setup gated communities.  Those infected go the south island and the vulnerable to the north island.  Or the other way round.

Something along similar lines.

True, but why are aircraft landing and bringing more in?

Because
A) They are Kiwis and have a right to enter their own country, and
B) The Govt has a responsibility for all Kiwis, anywhere in the world, and
C) It's probably cheaper to treat them here (if necessary) than overseas, and
D) If they self-isolate (and there's no reason to believe they won't) they're no threat to anyone, and
E) There are Poms and Aussies and all kinds here who also want to get home

I recall there being discussion by the government,  about elderly and vulnerable being moved to their own  area in NZs. But they then dismissed it due to the issues surrounding it. But only temporarily

Yes, I am aware of all that are are fine with it. That quote was taken out of context. I wish other people would separate what we are allowing to import, and what CT we have here. Many here seem to relate to these new cases as if they are rampant CT. They aren't rampant CT, they are planned and a known risk

Totally agree and to add to what you said Government has a responsibility to make sure all Kiwis are safe which is why the kiwis who are coming in should be scanned properly, self isolated or quarantined accordingly in order to make sure there is no community spread. They shouldn’t just land at the airport without any help or guidance or any checks and then go straight into community which increases the chances of putting a lot more people at risk of getting it.

Looking at the new cases, it seems some travel on domestic flights after arriving in NZ.  Aren't locals also on those domestic flights? I thought when they arrived in NZ, they were supposed to then travel in a private car to their place of self isolation, to reduce the risk of anyone getting it if they are infected?

This was Mt Eden tonight. Bar full inside and outside. The restaurant next door was the same.

A lot of people are not taking this seriously enough. For that reason, my family and I (there are only three of us) are quarantining ourselves at home, starting today. We have enough food to last at least four weeks eating normally, and another four weeks from our emergency kit. This is not a disease we want to catch - no matter our age.

I pray we are not too late in taking this step.

Other statements of intent I heard from people today who we regularly come into contact with:

  • Uni is cancelled for a week so I'm going out shopping
  • I worked from home last week but tomorrow we will go into work for an all staff meeting to discuss how working from home went
  • It's ok because I only go into work at 4:30 when most people have gone home
  • I'm still taking the bus

Until this weekend I had really believed we (as a country) would be on top of this. But we're not, at all.

if you bunker down now then 8 weeks is no where long enough before this gets really bad.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

For my last post here I would like to say this. There are folks that are reading this thread that are high risk for which this outbreak could have very serious outcomes. They will be, along with the medical problems they are dealing with they could be experiencing considerable stress, anxiety and depression. I would ask that you keep this in mind and think very carefully when you post and temper your language with empathy and compassion. Thank you.
